    I'm playing a Warforged Forge Cleric of Moradin. He was built and trained by an old dwarven priest. It's in a game that's meshing Forgotten Realms and MTG, and we're doing the whole planeswalking thing. Everywhere we go, my warforged explains his beliefs and such, and through that, ends up planting seeds of belief in Moradin. The party jokingly calls him a Moradin's Witness.

    Moradin is one of my favorite Greater Gods, tied with Corellon. Just a slight correction, Moradin is described in the lore as only being able to create so many dwarven souls at a time. With the recent dwarven decline, he went so far as to actually split dwarven souls in half in an attempt to prop up dwarven populations. To the dwarves, all they saw was this huge rise in the number of twins being born. So while Moradin is still definitely one of the most powerful gods, it is somewhat inaccurate to imply he can just create as many souls as he wants without restrictions. Who knows that all the side effects are for just splitting souls in half and having them incarnate as twins? The idea that there is some kind of split between souls and spirits in early editions is something I want to know more about so I can't wait to see that video on souls.

    • @thamiordragonheart8682
      @thamiordragonheart8682 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I think the souls vs. spirits might come from Tolkien's works. I believe that the humans, dwarves and halflings in Tolkien's works leave middle earth when they die whereas the elves are reincarnated in the undying lands across the sea. I don't know about the orcs and other evil races, but I think according to the Silmarillion they were corrupted from the elves, so probably don't have an afterlife outside middle earth.

    • @daniell1483
      @daniell1483 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@thamiordragonheart8682 I'm actually reading LoTR now. My understanding is that there is the physical body of the individual and then there is the Fea, the soul of the individual. That is why the Rings of Power turned the Wraiths from physical people to more incorporeal. The Wraith is the Fea of the person who used one of the 9 rings. Elves have the same thing going on and orcs being corrupted elves probably do as well. Elves who never go West have their body fall apart but their Fea lingers in Middle Earth, just not dominated by evil as the Ring Wraiths were. I don't know for sure but I'd assume dwarves are the same. So when any mortal (elf, dwarves, possibly orcs, but definitely not humans) dies, their Fea awakens in the Hall of Mandos in Valinor, which is like a limbo state that serves as a holding cell until the final battle that remakes Arda. Humans are unique in that when they die, their Fea/soul goes "beyond Arda", something that the elves seemingly prize so much they call it the Gift of Men. Beyond Arda is loosely implied to be the Christian Heaven because Eru Illuvitar is supposed to be God.
      That tangent aside, I still don't see the difference between souls and spirits in D&D.

      @@thamiordragonheart8682 It is a good setting and it definitely inspired a lot of elements in D&D. The ranger class is inspired at least in part by Aragorn for example. Souls in D&D though are a giant question mark for me. Souls for all rational beings come from somewhere, but where? Elven souls come from Corellon's blood and are always reincarnated. Dwarves get theirs crafted by Moradin. Half-elves undergo the human soul process. But what is that process? No idea. It is like human souls work in a fundamentally different way from other races' souls for some reason. That or I am missing something and just don't know what.

      Side note:. According to Tolkien, dwarves actually we're the first race, before even the Elves. Elves were SUPPOSED to be first..but the Maiar (equivalent of archangel)Aule, in charge of such things couldn't resist experimenting and made the dwarves as a rough draft.... Knowing that morgoth the fallen maiar would be involved he was determined to make them as sturdy and resistant to corruption as possible. When the big G of the tolkienverse, Illuvitar, found out about it he confronted Aule, who apologized for the offensive immediately and offered to destroy the dwarves he had created even though it was the genuine work of his heart done in emulation not defiance of his own creator, their destruction would pain him terribly. With the offer of that sacrifice, Illuvitar took pity, and gave the first dwarves their souls allowing them to exist as more than just automatons. He allowed the dwarves to be placed on Middle Earth but basically put them in slumber and agreed they would not wake him until the elves were there and already in place. It's a really nifty bit of storytelling that also does a great job of highlighting the difference between Aule and Morgoth....

    A few tips for 3.5 to 5e conversions.
    1. Stats in 5 MAX are 30, so you need to clamp stats based on a scaling clamp from 3.5. So moradin would have, clamped.
    29 (or 30), 19, 26, 19, 21, 22
    or something like that(Might still be off.). Figuring out the proper clamp is still a bit tricky.
    2. For AC its funny enough, much easier. Just subtract his CR from his AC and you usually get the 5e AC.
    3. Hit die and damage stay the same. Class levels are used here for hit die in particular.
    4. 3.5 saving throws are used, alongside his CR, to figure out his bonus to various throws. The highest of the three throws, (Fort, Ref, or Will) will dictate which saving throws they would have proficiency in. If the save is over 30, they'd have Expertise in that saving throw. (Fort is Str/Con, Ref is Dex/int, Will is Wis/Cha I believe.) And if its over 20 without being their highest, they have proficiency. (If over 30, they have expertise as well.)
    5. Use their CR as if it was a player level and look at the proficiency table. Ignore any class levels they'd have.
    6. For skills, try the best you can to match proficiency and expertise to what they'd have in 3.5. This one is much like the next step and requires you as the DM to figure out, there is no actual conversion thing here really.
    7. Then all that is left is adding in his bonuses, changing spells, and changing any 3.5 effects such as 'instantly kill' or 'lower levels' or something like that to something more of what 5e would use like '8d8 damage' or '1 level of exhaustion' or something like that.
    For legendary resistances/mythic resistances and abilities that is up to the DM, but divine usually have 5, and creatures have 3 with a potential 1 mythic in both. In addition Divine creatures usually have their spell/magic immunities, and would probably be immune to all spells below 4-6th level, while being magic resistant beyond that.

    • @acetraker1988
      @acetraker1988 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the DMG, it is easy to continue the monster creation table on page 274 above CR30. DMs can do whatever so the limits are just tools. Stat books increase scores beyond caps, an a god of making stuff in theory would have no issue with having these items.
      Ab Bonus = AB Value - 10 divide by 2.
      +18 for his 46 Strength.
      +13 for his 36 Constitution.

    • @archmagemc3561
      @archmagemc3561 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@acetraker1988 those rules are put into place in the DMG so that everything is around where they should be with bounded accuracy,. If you want to homebrew outside of those tables, you need to also give the same power to the players, which just gives you more headaches as a DM. You can do it, but your entering the realm of homebrew at this point.

    I heard about Moradin upon request by prayer actual change anyone to a dwarf . So I was thinking of creating a human that converted to the religion of Moradin , and was changed into a dwarf just before meeting the group party. As the character slowly changes personality as the dwarven focus starts to set in , and certain quirks start to manifest. I learned that Moradin does this , and ever since I wanted to create character with this backstory. This would also explain why Dwarves keep friendly races around cause this is literally a boon to their population . Humans populate quickly , and could make a lot of sense.

    • @BryantVonMiller
      @BryantVonMiller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This contains a fair bit of lore for clarity, to hopefully explain a good bit of the Dwarfs and Moradin.
      Dwarves "can technically" breed. And make dwarves, but Moradin. He uses the soul forge to create a fetus of a dwarf and gives it light and life. Breathing it into existance, then using his divination to.. flow from the male dwarf and into the female, with help from the dwarfen goddess Berrenor Truesilver, the consort of Moradin.
      Through their combined act of creation, they deliver offspring to their dwarves.
      But sometimes the dwarf male/females body cannot accept the life, and thus they could go childless.
      Or a dark force of evil prevents it.
      Or some dwarves are celibate, not because of lack of sexual lacking. But because their lives revolve around their work.
      They dedicate every fiber and moment of their lives to this craft of theirs. And they ensure its the best they can make, always learning and keeping busy.
      And thats how nearly all of the dwarven gods want to be venerated, how they gather strength from their followers.
      And yes they can "technically" breed with other beings, like humans and others. But Moradin is very, very fickle.
      If he looks to a dwarf and see's them wanting to breed with another creature, say an elf.
      He would have to commune with Corrilon. And since these two have to then agree to combine a dwarf soul with an elfish soul. Something both gods wouldn't do.
      Or a human and a dwarf. Then it falls under the human's diety and Moradin. If they're evil. Moradin prevents it and will attempt to save said dwarf. If he cannot. Then that dwarf is lost, and his soul if cannot be reclaimed by Moradin.
      Is a spark of life lost forever to Moradin and his creations.
      And its believed Moradin can only create so many dwarves, whilst he does what he likes to do. He's a VERY busy god.
      And he cannot always dedicate his time to creation, he will let others use the "only" way to create dwarf souls. At the soul forge.
      Letting others use it.
      But only he and he alone can make dwarf's. Only he can bring life and birth to his creations.
      DnD is a very complicated, magical place. Our perceptions of reproducing is.. not entirely applicative to what happens there.

    Hi Mr Rhexx.
    I have bought your PDF for Monster Races, and I have to say it is AWESOME! (And I have questions about it)
    I just LOVE the three races / classes you created, it is amazing work, with the stats, the story, the many character options, the sheer flavour of it all! And the art is very nice too! Bravo!
    Celestials, Succubi and Ghosts seem like VERY desirable options for PCs, and now YOU have created a viable way to play them (3rd edition's "savage species" was not really viable)! This is fantastic work! I will, definitely, continue following your creations (I already follow your TH-cam channel with passion)
    Further, I have always fantasied on a Succubus with a Good-hearted nature - either on a redemption path or a will to not be evil (since I began playing D&D, more than 30 years ago)! And you mentioned that option! Thank you!
    Which leads me to my question / request for added information and details on some options that you mentioned.
    You mention in your work the path to redemption for the Succubus, which is awesome (and I loved it that you cleverly detailed the implication between morality and the inherently lewd mind of the race).
    You also offer a nice choice of origin options, some of which meaning that the individual creature needs not be inherently driven by Evil intent - which is also very awesome. So here are three "basic" questions:
    1 If a Succubus is on the path to redemption (or wishing to escape the fate of being tied to Hell or Abyss), and truly wanting to leave the path of Evil, what would be her alignment?
    - Would she still be NE, or have the alignment that she wishes to pursue, or having an undetermined True Alignment, until she reaches redemption?
    - I suppose she'd be detected as Evil with magic, until a God of Good would validate her atonement, what do you think?
    2. If a Succubus has a background which means that she did not choose/deserve her damnation (namely, background option #7, or if she was born from two succubi, with the genetic flaw of not feeling inherently Evil), and she wishes to escape the fate of being doomed to be an evil demon, what would be her path to redemption? She may even have such a story that she did not ever commit evil acts. I think of several background stories, two of which makes her devoid of any Evil intent (which are somehow far-fetched, but make for a very interesting case of tragic back-story):
    2a- She would wake up after death as a Succubus, and not wanting to commit evil, and be a slave to a powerful devil until something happens (either a rebellion or her master king deposited), and she manages to escape to the Prime
    2b- She would be sent on her first evil mission and try to find asylum with a church of Good and Redemption (such as Ilmater or Lathander or Selune - or maybe Sunie, in a different way, or even Bahamut...)
    What would be the path then?
    3. The same kind of questioning could also be relevant in more "grey" cases. If a Succubus has committed bad sins, not as evil intent, but out of misjudgement and stupidity (such as background options #2, #6, #10, #11)... how wold you judge that she has made enough good deeds (7 times for each sin)? I would assume it would be the DM's fiat, and probably a running backstory throughout the campaign.
    4. Last,If the subject interests you, I have further "advanced" questions / subjects to ponder:
    The backstory of the race is a tragic one, where the gods were... kind of absolute jerks - very much like the Greek gods were. Punishing angels for being benevolent and wanting some agency, by rendereing them evil and destroying their reason to be... (seems like the angels of love were CG, very Good indeed, and the gods were very lawaful and their actions were LE)
    - Would you consider the possibility of a Succubus being still Good at heart towards the mortal races, and angry at the Gods that cursed her and her race? And if so, what would be the options (especially in the Forgotten Realms, where having no Patron God is kind of impossible)?
    - If the only sin they committed was to want to chose who to love, only 7 good deeds would circumvent the transgression, would it not? But then, there is the matter of injustice and rebellion... There is a very deep theological / moral questioning there...
    - Would there be gods that appeared after the fall of the Angels of Love, who would consider taking one such under their wings? If so, would it upset the balance of alliances between the gods?
    - Would some Chaotic Good deities or powers (I think of the Eladrins) that would accept them and help them escape the realm of fiends?
    - Maybe there would be a goddess of Succubus Redemption, quite the way that Eilistraee is to the Drow? (And yes, I know Eilistraee is your favourite power of all D&D universes, and I definitely understand why)
    Thank you for any answers, and thank you for your work. Cheers.

    I know that the range of differences between them is staggering, but this just reminds me of how I looked at Auril's stats, in Rime of the Frostmaiden, and cringed. Apart from Her age (She's about as old as Toril), She's a lot less than Moradin, in most respects, and She's also breaking rules that strap consequences to Her, but He's this powerhouse, and She...can be bested by a party of similar strength to Strahd. Oh well, 5e has frequently suffered with making truly daunting challenges, or making things feel "divine", like this. Tiamat is potent, but mostly just an upscaled dragon, in Rise; no godlike powers, and the Frostmaiden was much the same. It is also hinted at that the party of Out of the Abyss might storm the Demonweb Pits, and smite Lolth for the events of that campaign, so maybe 5e deities are SUPPOSED to be weak? Maybe I should be glad that they haven't tackled the Dead Three, yet. Anyway, yeah, Moradin is a powerhouse.

      Honestly the way they've had Tiamat used just made me upset. She is a literal god you should not go anywhere near her unless you are at least 20th level. And have a hope of even contending with her Avatar. Or same with any of the Demon Princes or Arch Dukes of the Nine Hells. You go up against any of those and you need to be at least 18th level to have a hope of survival. But nope. Baphomet the King of Beasts is so flimsy I wouldn't be surprised if a 10th level party could kill him.

    I know that this is the last video of the Dwarf saga. But I also would love to see videos about the races close to Dwarfs like the Duregar, Azer and whatever more exists. Also, maybe you could consider make some videos about DM's guild content the you personally like that expands the Dwarf lore.
