      What's also cool: From the very beginning, if you turn on subtitles for everything (not just cutscenes), you will get subtitles of what the phantoms are saying.
      This is especially disturbing on Mooncrash when, playing as Riley Yu, you can run into a phantom that says "What's wrong? You don't remember me? We worked together"

      yeah see i didnt want to be a typhon(plot twist, hahah) i didnt think of it almost at all, until i got stuck at one point, watched one quick walkthrough and the person mentioned if you upgrade those abilities you become recognized as such.. so i stuck with the q-beam OP weapon along with shottie and pistol mostly and hacks.. so I would have never noticed that,. But now I know what I will do on my 2nd go round!

      Bethesda really did dirty to Prey 2017. This games intended name was Neuroshock but Bethesda forced Arkane to change it. Obviously original Pray was totally different kind of game and this created lots of confusion and negative press around the launch. So this masterpiece never had the fair change it deserved.

    I think that the poster near the door in Morgan's room has a different meaning than what you described. I think this is a depiction of the Great Filter, another concept in the Fermi Paradox. Basically the Great Filter is the idea that the reason there are so few aliens is that there is some sort of "filter" preventing species from achieving higher levels of intelligence and progress, so the few that do are extremely rare. This comes with speculation of whether or not humanity has passed the filter or is stuck behind it. I think the poster is an illustration of one species (possibly the typhon) breaking trough the great filter, where others have failed.

    On your last point, I was one of those people that didn't give the game a chance. I remember watching E3 with some of my friends when they announced Mooncrash. I said, and I quote, "Lmao, didn't nobody like that game? Why would they make a DLC?", to which one of my friends said "What? People loved that game." I had only heard the "professional" reviews, he heard from the actual players. So a couple days later, I ended up buying the game on sale, and it's now one of my all-time favorites. Really just goes to show how one bad review from a bad reviewer working for a bad review site can completely sway public opinion.

    "What does it look like, the shape in the glass" was also a phrase the psychologist Mathias Kohl said to Dr. Calvino. Not only this but every phrase the phantoms repeat is from somebody or some audio log that Morgan has gone through. This makes me feel like the simulation, when repeated remembers the previous thigs that Morgan did and adjusts itself or something.

    “What does it look like, the shape in the glass?” is a phrase from one of the audio logs, too. It was from the psychologist interviewing the guy who was working on the Looking Glass project about his dreams. It might be a foreshadowing, but it's still explainable by phantoms repeating the phrases they heard. I think it's also said in some in-game source (can't remember if it's Morgan's notes or some document) that phantoms just mimic human speech.
    0451 might be a code for the door to LG Studios, but that code itself could very well be a further reference.
    Kletka means cage in Russian.
    I do not think Prey and Dishonored can possibly be in the same universe. Prey references the analogues to real-world nations and events all the time, and its world is pretty much exactly Earth, while there is nothing of the sort in Dishonored. 200-something years are not enough for such a change.

    • @TenzinBeifongIII

      200 years ago we didn't have cars, A/C, Television, radio, or even refrigeration. A lot can happen in 200 years. I don't think they're in the same universe either, don't get me wrong. But 200 years is plenty of time to have crazy changes. We couldn't even fly 200 years ago. We now visit space regularly.

    • @Spellweaver5
      @Spellweaver5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@TenzinBeifongIII I'm not talking about technology. I am talking about geography, biology, and politics. Hell, even physics.
      While we didn't have TV 200 years ago, we still had Eurasia, Africa and America. Hell, we even already had Antarctica discovered. Absolute majority of current nations and languages existed already, and would even be recognizable to a modern person. Absolute majority of species that exist currently, existed 200 years ago. And we didn't have magic back then, either.

    • @TenzinBeifongIII
      @TenzinBeifongIII ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Spellweaver5 actually, the majority of species that existed 200 years ago are now extinct. And most of the country borders haves changed so drastically in that time that the global map would be entirely unrecognizable. Not to mention in the Americas alone there has been so much change in the last 200 years. Half of "the United States" hadn't even become states.
      I want you to take a second and think about how stupid you including "politics" in your comment is. Political climates across the planet have changed and shifted so drastically over the last 200 years that world leaders of that day would zero out of existence simply trying to understand how everything got to the fucking mess of a world we have now.
      How many languages have died in that time? Also, you may think you're making such a good argument bringing up physics, but you look like a total fool. The last 200 years have brought such insane understanding in that field that Newton would have a heart attack, and he's only been dead 300.
      Also, barely 300 years ago in the western world, science and medicine were considered somewhat magical. Sorry for pushing the timeline a bit there, but I hope you get my point.
      I'm not looking at world maps here, and it's obvious that Prey takes place in an alternate timeline/dimension and Dishonored/Deathloop take place in a fictional universe. Never disagreed there. But when trying to take into account everything you mentioned, actually think a little more deeply. The progress of humanity in the last 123 years alone is staggering. throughout the game we're shown that phantoms are using the human inside of them like a base/skeleton they use to build the rest of themselves, they take random parts of the human like body, name and memories and use those to function on a basic level, they're pretending to be humanoid when that's not a physical configuration natural to them.
    even our player phantom goes back to mimicking Morgan in the good ending, phantoms are just mimics trying to mimic something too complicated for them to figure out (probably the brain specifically).

PRESERVE YOUR AMMO! USE MIMICS TO GO THROUGH GAPS!" Etc, etc.
    It's a bit frustrating that there's still quite many ppl that doesn't think outside the box when all the tools are laid right infront of them, But I guess that's why Immersive sim is not that popular, most ppl are just too used to playing streamlined and straightforward games that they don't realize they can do more than what the game tells them.

    I love this game. The doll at the end of moon crash can also be a reference to the 1995 movie Screamers, which I suggest people watching. It is about killer machines in a mining colony that self replicate and begin mimicking items to get close to people, including mimicking people. As the film comes to a close there is a shuttle heading towards earth and the character has a teddy bear on board, it fades to black as the bear begins to move.

    Prey was something I'd bought for myself just because I saw it, thought the cover was cool and liked the price tag ---and that ended up COMPLETELY blowing me away.
    Spent a long time recommending it to anyone with even the slightest interest in space based action games of any kind and genius storytelling or game mechanics. Really happy to see you cover this one. Even though it might not be so fresh anymore - try it for yourself guys.
    This video is amazing, but you're really going to appreciate it if you give it a try.
    I recommend easy mode though. Not because it's particularly hard in comparison to other games, but because you don't want to be lost in theorizing and exploring and suddenly stumble into utter chaos (been there, done that) -otherwise it's honestly not that long if you really push through, but there's so much you can get by just being attentive

    A little late here, but I just wanted to point out that one of the possible reasons Prey didn't get the recongnition it deserved it most likely the name itself. I remember when it was announced a lot of people got really hyped because they thought it was a reboot of Prey (2006), where you take the place of native american fighting an alien invasion using a mix of alien bio-weapons and spiritual powers, all in a really dark scenario.
    And, although Prey (2017) is an amazing game like the video points out, the fact that it wasn't some were building it up to be, it killed most of the game's hype and left it a sort of hidden gem.

      Probably actually worse than that, the 2006 game had a sequel that got cancelled within 18-24 months of the release of this game.

    So for the kid's drawing of the Phantom, I have a theory. It's a bit off the cuff so may have some things wrong lorewise, but whatever. Maybe rather than being controlled by a telepath, the mother herself had Typhon-related telepath powers. It would make sense there may be types of powers possible that we don't have access to, as a mix of some of them being too early in testing or just gameplay considerations. And the idea of a mother using her newfound powers to make a connection with her child on Earth is kind of sweet. ...The second layer of this theory is that, if that's true, and let's say the mother was visiting her child in their dreams, then the Phantom the child was seeing was actually their mom. The body may have been human, mostly, but the spirit was already something else, long before the breakout.

    • @HollowBagel
      @HollowBagel ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That doesn't make much sense. Morgan and the volunteers were the only ones receiving typhon-based neuromods. Regina Sellers (the mother of the child) doesn't work anywhere near where she would interact with or know about the typhon, nevermind getting neuromods based on them.
      And while it's true that she became a phantom, there are already many cases of Talos I staff having nightmares and visions of the typhon, so they're unrelated. The moon also isn't that far from Earth. If the coral can broadcast a signal across interstellar space, then they can certainly reach Earth with their influence. It could also be easier to affect people around neuromods, since all typhon are connected, and if someone with a neuromod is on Earth, the typhon might be able to influence weaker people nearby.

    14:22 Had to pause here and look at the poster you mentioned. You suggested that it might be an indication of how the Typhon came from some dark dimension, but when I took a closer look at it I realized that's not what it is AT ALL. It's a visual representation of the Great Filter: a potential solution to the Fermi Paradox. That big red barrier is labelled with Omega ('Ω'), which, in this context, means "the end," clearly denoting it as the filter itself. In the picture, though, something is very clearly breaking through. This begs a few questions... What is the filter, what managed to get past it, and is one of them the Typhon?
    And OF COURSE I write all that and scroll down to see someone else went and wrote the same thing already. Screw it, have my engagement anyway lol.
    EDIT: I was listening to the last half of the video on my way home from work and suddenly everything clicked for me around your mention of Alex's password, the description of Chenghuanshen being the "god of the boundary," and showing the Great Filter poster again. Alex is ABSOLUTELY the god of the boundary in Prey, but it isn't something as mundane as a boundary between spaces or dimensions. Rather, he's attempting to open the boundary between EXPERIENCES; between humans and Typhon. Bearing in mind Alex is playing god here, I shall draw your attention to a quote from the Bible where god says: "I am the Alpha and Omega; the beginning and the end." Back to the Great Filter poster. I noticed the Omega symbol on the filter when I wrote my earlier comment, but what I HADN'T noticed previously, because I'm pretty sure it was out of frame, was the ALPHA symbol at the bottom.
    Putting all this together: Alex is playing god. He is the Alpha and Omega. As an extension of that and in the context of the poster, ALEX IS THE GREAT FILTER. All those dark lines going up to the filter? You're right, they're Typhon, but they're specifically Typhon that Alex created and filtered OUT. Failed attempts at bridging the Human-Typhon experiential barrier. And the one that makes it through is... you.
    That poster at the very beginning spoils the entire game; you just need to finish the game to realize that. An immediate spoiler hiding in plain sight. Man, this game is truly a masterpiece.

    I almost didn't click on this video because "iceberg explained" is not my favourite but this was a blast! I particularly liked the parts that didn't ship in the game.
    14:21 I am quite certain the poster represents the Great Filter - that's exactly how it tends to be represented (look up images online!) Alpha for genesis of life and Omega for the _end_ of most lifeforms that die out before elevating even further on the scale of intelligence. A barrier like... typhons hunting down any sentience they can find, for example.
    The baseball gloves are not typhon -- they actually had that many; according to a reddit comment:
    > The story behind the gloves is that one of the staff is a famous ex-baseball player (Harley Grainger). He gave everyone signed gloves and nobody uses them or remembers him.
    32:50 The nullwave device's function is momentary. I don't think it was ever intended to "stop the signal" - it was probably meant to destroy all typhon material and any _source_ of a potential signal. I also believe it works flawlessly - beating the apex, even. I don't see any failure here.
    What I do know is this: you're given a quest to scan the coral and it's explained that this data and the very coral itself help the nullwave device by propagating it throughout the whole coral network.
    The theories are a bit wack, not going to lie:
    "January caused outbreak" is a really cool idea but I feel like it's a bit unfounded - sure, the motive and the coincidences are very much there but not much else. There is absolutely no hint to any connection with the other suspects.
    "Yu brothers plot to restart humanity" is totally off-the-wall, I can't even begin to understand how you've arrived at that idea. Why would Alex spend so much effort containing the typhon, going as far as making sure the escape pods don't work? (at least I think that's what he meant when he told an engineer not to repair/install anything in the pods, with the pretext that the parts aren't rated for that) I feel like you give Alex way too much credit.
    The Evacuation being alien in origin - I also highly doubt that. Especially as the (fictional) author blames "scientists" specifically. I prefer the simple "recycler" theory.
    All in all, mostly a waste of time engaging in these.
    Mooncrash actually takes place at a similar time as the main game. I think it might even be on the same date? Anyways, the player character's story is definitely _after_ Talos 1 falls, that I am sure of.
    All in all, I feel like this barely scratched the surface, let alone an iceberg - there's just so much to Prey! XD

    Prey is one of the most criminally underrated game I’ve seen. It’s so interesting and imo a great lovecraftian horror both from the lenses of humans and the otherworldly alien creatures. We have humans dealing with an alien threat they seek to understand, resulting in their own destruction. With the “kill them all” ending its humans ego of thinking they’re so important that fucks them even more. At the same time, the typhon is just a primal creature, just wanting to do its process with no greater thought. Now they’ve been shown the life of a human, experiencing emotions and actions they never would’ve even imagined before. It’ll never go back to what it once was, no longer typhon but also not human. It’s so damn cool to me and the concept of being the alien is something I never saw before and I want so much more of. And more horror that’s horror in its story and not just with jumpscares and basic scare tactics. I hope somehow we can make it clear how great this game is and how much we love it so we can get a sequel or just anything. I’d hate for such an interesting world and concept to never be revisited again.

    It’s criminal that this game got less attention, but in some ways that may be a blessing.
    Because there’s not as big of an audience, there’s a small enough cult following that has the ability to love the game while being aware of any flaws. But these flaws, for this small group of gamers, don’t overshadow their ability to enjoy the game.
    I find that when a game has an insanely large audience and is mainstream for the gaming industry, the praise can be abundant, yes, but the criticism can be 10 times more. And often, this criticism is all that is focused on, damning a lot of GREAT games to being tied to their one or two biggest flaws. I’m glad that Prey won’t be lost to the hatred and flaw fixation that a lot of good games often do.
    Also, I’m glad it’s not popular enough to be inevitably turned into a Hollywood money maker that will end up doing the game multiple injustices. A Prey movie would be cool, but just don’t, please. Never goes well.

      @@FranklyGaming i appreciate you doing so! I am not anywhere near doing a video like this on my channel 😂
      I have played through the story twice, once on Xbox One and another on PS4. My PS4 run I did just every side quest except finding all the ID's and retained my humanity by not using any Typhon mods. Next run will be all Typhon. I also am one of the few people who bought Mooncrash but I haven't finished it yet with everyone. Its pretty challenging to figure out what all you need to do to save everyone. It is one of the coolest and most innovative DLC's though.

    1:24:18 I'm sorry pal, Arkane Studio's is basically no more at this point, as evidenced from Red Fall, all of the best and brightest have moved to other studios.

    What a phenomal video, you deserve far more subscribers!
    I've watched a lot of videos which critiqued and analysed Prey but this is one of my favorites.
    I really enjoy your narration and learned a lot of new things, seeing the sequence with the Soviet satellite was amazing. I appreciated how you separated the game into different tiers. You explored many things I didn't notice which gives so much food for thought, thank you! Is the background song playing until 14:51 Alex Theme?^^
    Great indepth analysis, I finished the game yesterday and it's one of my all time favorites already and your amazing video enforces it!

      @@FranklyGamingou're very welcome, your video made me fall in love with Prey even more!
      It undeniably is, let's hope that we will get a sequel, with game pass the chance is at least a little bit higher. What games similar to Prey or Immersive Sims could you recommend?😊

  • @SilimSavertin
    @SilimSavertin ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Typhon are all telepathically linked, and their psychic presence seems to always get stronger the more of them that there are. I'm pretty sure the child's drawing is just from her being especially vulnerable to the constant psychic background influence of the Typhon in orbit.
    But man, this game was so heavily underrated. It's criminal that we'll most likely never get a sequel.

    49:38 that emmanuel mendez guy is an engineer working in power plant section. when you track him from security station, you find his body in outer space, next to a billboard with transtar logo. when you press a button on the board's control panel, it completes the operation mendez was trying to do and the board displays "all escape pods are fake" 😱

    Well done. It’s nice to see someone else loves this game and it’s DLC as much as I do. I play games, yes, but then I find one that I play until my fingernails grow long and play nothing else. Prey is certainly in that category.
