    Now I understand why when I drove an older Navistar (no synchros) why when I downshifted why the gears would always crash and I'd have to stop the truck and start all over? I never knew to blip the throttle in the neutral clutching shift to speed the transmission gear shaft to speed up with the engine's. I have never had any trouble shifting cars, pickup trucks etc. before, just the big Navistar 30 foot box truck that I had rented. Great teaching video.

  • @cageordie

    This only makes real sense when demonstrated on a truck, like you are. I used to drive a 1976 Bedford TK horsebox and this shows what I had to do if I wanted to get it to down shift. Most people demo this on cars, and the revs die away so fast that they are engaging the clutch the second time with the revs down to idle. I never used it on up shifts, just rev matched and often didn't use the clutch. If you get it right then even though the it was a crash gearbox there was no grinding. I almost never ground the gears. On the down side, it would only exceed 60mph on a long downhill.

      Well if you want your CDL you have to double clutch or you won’t pass your road test, this guy is teaching students how to do that. Now in your own truck, you do what you want. I’m pretty sure most drivers float gears.

    • @Azznbad
      @Azznbad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@emkayusa I understand that double clutching is part of the test for driving, but it is a pointless skill to learn. Not only have driven 2 million miles, I've also been the head mechanic in truck shops and there is no logical reason for double clutching in modern trucks. Ive never seen mechanical failures due to not using a clutch and floating a Trans into a gear,, but have seen more damaged caused by improper clutching than I care to remember. I've seen clutch brakes exploded because drivers press the clutch to the floor while moving because they never learned to get a truck back in gear if you miss a gear.
      You have to have your rpms correct double clutch or not. I can double clutch if I were to be required to take a driving test, but double clutching is a practice whose time has passed and I've driven some pretty old trucks and I'm not certain it was ever nessicary.
      This isn't a criticizem of the guy in the video, but the state requiring double clutching without being able to give you a reason for it is like other things when we ask why. Because that's how it's always been done. These are not 5 X 4 transmissions these days that you use both hands to shift, or worse yet the 5 X 3 triplex I had in a couple of old silver dog Macks.

    • @Azznbad
      @Azznbad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ffhgu 07 they still shift just fine without double clutching. Double clutching is a skill required to pass the test that has no mechanical use for using. Your RPMs and speed has to match whether you double clutch or not. I know people who double clutched for the last forty years and those who never touch the clutch and double clutchers always need their clutches adjusted it seems and those like me who drove one truck for 600,000 miles without ever adjusting the clutch on a 25 miles rt short haul. The average round trip load required 105 shifts per load, and took about an hour. That's over 1000 double clutches per day. If nothing else you wear out the friggin linkage clutching that often.

    • @DerKaktusAvant
      @DerKaktusAvant 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Older transmissions require you to double cluch due to the lack of syncros or bad ones. I have a saxo vts track car with a dog box - no syncros - when you are pushing it you dont need to use the clutch but driving it on the road you need to double clutch it mostly on downshifts. Much better for the gearbox and much smoother with a dogbox.

    Man you are grinding the gears and your truck shakes and jerks when you are shifting, you are not mentioning your speed and your RPM before you shifting. bad video

      Because when he trains, he teaches you to shift by speed, not rpm. i had him as an instructor and trust me, I got my CDL on first try. Don't be mad that you didn't get yours lol.
