    I drove a truck for the first time today and the instructor yelled at me. I've had broken confidence all day.
    I watched this and learned I'm not alone when starting out. I like how you compared it to drumming with muscle memory. Hell yeah!
    I can do this. I will do this.

    You'll NOT fail the CDL exam if you don't double clutch. You're shifting ability only applies to a small portion of the test. You won't get your best score but you won't fail. You will fail if you get lost in the gears and you bring the truck to a complete stop on a traveled roadway. That's an unsafe act. Also if you hit a fixed object like a curb you'll fail. You must prove during the driving portion of the test that you have CONTROL of the vehicle.
    I wish everyone would see the Clutch as a means to start the truck moving and also a means to move the shifter. If you haven't, or are not able to relax the throttle to the point where you don't have torque applied to the transmission (which makes it hard to move the stick either out of or into a gear) then applying the clutch just a small amount will enable you to move the stick. If you're an expert on controlling the throttle then you should be able to always float the gears.

      Mike Logan I'm in school now to get a class A cdl and im not sure if that varies state from state but here in PA they said its mandatory to double clutch or you fail.

      You’re right man, I lost my first gear I had a control and I recovered from my first lost gear the truck didn’t stop examiner didn’t say anything, my second gear I lost it and the truck stopped on the middle of the road and the traffic behind me stopped so he talked and I failed right away.

    • @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest
      @mikelogan99CDLClassAskillstest 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don’t double clutch on your test it’s a point deduction not an automatic failure. If you accumulate enough points by making an error like not double clutching then you will fail. Someone told you that you’ll fail if you don’t double clutch and you will but it’s not an automatic failure like “Having a moving violation or disobeying signs or signals”.

My trainers either didn't know or they didn't care to share their life experience. I think they were just there for a pay check and thats it. They didn't care if you passed or not. But I live in a small town and my resources are limited. So did what I could to get by. Thanks again.

    Thank you so much for posting this. I'm in trucking school right now and on the 2nd Week. Its a 3 Week crash course and maybe another half a week after the 3rd. But I've gotten through the classroom part of the school and we're doing the driving and I'm learning everything from double clutching and its something we have to do when we're tested by the DOT and gear shifting. I've gotten the gear shifting down I believe I'm just having trouble with the 1 and 2 rule for double clutching.

    Awesome video, thanks for being real about being confused when you first started out learning to shift properly. Also, great analogy of the truck talking to you, it makes sense on knowing when down or up shifting is a must!!

    So, I reliied to an old comment and figured I'd add it as a regular comment to add to the thread and maybe hear what others have to say.
    "Basically, the throttle let up acts like the clutch. You load the shifter the take torque off the gears and the shifter slips out easy then slip in the next gear. On the up, it will slip right in immediately as your rpm drops swiftl, on the down I'm a little less experienced but a wick rev to the right rpm and it should slide right in as well. It's a little more tricky if you miss the gear and you switch to recovery. At that point you have to reference your rpm to your speed and that will to tell you the gear to go to. Uphill and down hill matter as far as how your speed will change out of gear, so that's kind of on a feel basis and will be further effected by gvw, no doubt. That said, I'm new to the 10 speed and am just sharing what I've caught onto over a couple weeks. Please feel free to correct or add to anything I've said here, everyone. My take on floating vs double clutch is it's all about the same, but with the clutch, you have a little more speed control as you don't have to change the torque the get to neutral. I'd you run it right you're just sliding open a window to get to the gear, so if you're running it right there isn't really any lag in the process. "
    Thanks, E, my brother has been telling me about you for a couple years now and I'm finally here. LAKEV6 @central refer sends his regards

    been driving manual drive cars for years, and you did a damn good job explaining manual trans. Truck seems like just a couple extra steps I am ready for it starting in just a few days thanks for the heads up on the steps. Anything that will give me the edge over other newb drivers in the school, it seems more cutthroat these days. Besides that the more I know now the less stress on others, and other drivers when I am on the road.

    I admit it will take some chair practice but I think I grasp the technique "visually". Now I am aware that a passenger trans does not rev the same as a rig. I have heard many rigs as they take off from stop lights go thru a number of gears just to take off. Hopefully my 15 minutes of double clutching back when I was younger (2005) still works. {individual had a dump truck trans in a lifted chevy (i know its a passenger vehicle but it really was different than a small car)}
    Thankyou for posting this video. I know it will help me.

    I work at UPS and I got in to our "feeder" school, which is what we call our big rigs. Our school got really screwed up because of a shortage on drivers and I had to go on a run with a supervisor on my second day. We got stuck in Lexington because of a wreck on the interstate and wound up having to spend the night. That shot 2 days of my school so then I only had one day to learn how to upshift, downshift, double clutch, AND pull doubles! I couldn't get the hang of it because downshifting is just pure evil. I had to drop out and now I have to wait another year before I can try again. I don't think I'll ever be able to get it! I wish I had a way to practice it but I don't think a trucking school will let you go there and practice when you are a CDL permit driver. So frustrating!

      +DuckTalesWooHoo1987 All independent trucking schools cost around $5,000 to $7,000 to enroll. They make you pay back their tuition charge by making you work for one of their finishing schools and & team driving over the road. They take 90% of your check and leave you with $200-300 dollars to live on. All schools do this for the first 6-12 months.
      But if you hang in there after your tuition is paid off you WILL bring more money home. After about 2 years you can move on to a local driving job and be set for life. If you're unemployed and you want to drive for a living, why not just forget about UPS and start over again at one of those indie schools?

    • @SimpleManGuitars1973
      @SimpleManGuitars1973 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the thing about working at UPS is that it has taken me 15 years to get to this point and our insurance is the best in the world and our pay is contractually obligated to be the highest on the road. Most of our drivers make over 6 figures a year doing runs that have you home every day. Honestly I don't really consider our drivers "truckers" in the purest sense. They really just hold the wheel and make tons of money. Other truckers live in their trucks and also have to do their own maintenance and things like that. Our drivers are like ivy leaguers or something. I'm sure you're much more of a true trucker than them. They just make a lot and that's what I'm in it for. Would a trucking school not let you practice on the weekends or anything?

But I have no problem up shifting 10 speed! That is cake right now and I am "accidentally" floating gears! so much easier! I know though when I take my test I will have to double but for now floating is easier!

    Obviously this guy is the expert here and I'm a teenager, but about that little Lever on the gear knob which he called the splitter - I would personally have called it the "range selector" or something like that because it goes between different sets of gears (ranges) - from low to high gears - rather than splitting each gear into what is essentially two gears. Anyone think the same or different?
    It was a really good video nonetheless.

    I still prefer to float honestly it's easier on the truck than clutching

      Any driver that clutch or double clutch to change gears except for take off and stopping cannot drive. There's no need to touch the clutch to shift after taking off

      Brian Mills as someone who has drove automatic trucks for the past 2 years, would you recommend me to try and learn floating or stick to double clutching until I’m comfortable with how the Rpm and speed work?

    note the reason for double clutching (or floating) is to sycrinize the RPM to the speed. automobiles standard tranmisions are sycrinized, trucks are not....

    I always referred to that not in gear resting position as neutral, but maybe that's just what we call it in Washington, if it's different everywhere else let me know.

      That line was almost as bad as the floor plate blowing off... What dipstick double clutches in a drag race? Ain't no one got time for that, racing isn't supposed to be easy on your equipment.

      atsernov Yep. If anything their ECU should have been flashed with no lift/shift w/o even using the clutch to shift between gears.
