  • 'Black WWII RAF Pilot Who Died Alone Honoured by Hundreds at Funeral'
Flight Sergeant Peter Brown was born in Jamaica in 1926 and died alone in London at 96 years old.
With no known relatives in the UK, a campaign sought to organise a military funeral for the WWII veteran - who was part of the so-called 'Pilots of the Caribbean'.
And after a monumental effort, he was finally laid to rest. Report by Alex Reed.

Passed away in his sleep and a military funeral. Beautiful, well done to all involved in getting that done.
May you Rest In Peace Flight Sergeant Peter Brown.

Well at least some of his relatives came to the funeral. He lived a long life and that was really nice what they did for him.

But if we cared in the first place he would not have died alone right? This makes us feel better.

I think you missed the point here? He lived alone and died in his sleep, so would he not have been alone? The important point was, by him being immediately missed by his neighbours they raised the alarm with the police. Many less fortunate persons have no-one that notices they are not there.

sad, it took his death to receive what he should’ve r received alive, how distorted is that?!

What are you talking about? What should he have received when alive? He was given a military funeral for doing 5 missions during WW2, unlike many others who served in WW2 who did far more. And all some can do is complain.

@@itsmeagain5669 I don't think you listened to the report and I don't think you know enough about his life to comment on it. He died alone because he died in his sleep. It was his neighbour who checked on him because she was concerned about him. As the report says he had no known relatives in the country so the funeral was organised for him by the community and local authority. The report further says he was a "popular figure among the local community, well-known and liked". They even went to "great lengths" to find any distant relatives so they could attend his funeral. I'm assuming you won't be criticising them for not caring about him.

Sad that Mr Brown is no longer with us and HE never claimed all this last 'Pilots of the Caribbean' stuff. But he didn't fly ANY operations during the war. I've looked at the Operational Flying Book for No 625 Squadron and his first flight was on 15th May 1945 - the war in Europe famously ended on 8th May 1945.
