  • June of 2019 we had the honor of bringing 16 #WWII #Veterans back to #Normandy for the #75th anniversary of #DDay. You can help more veterans return by donating to our foundation.
    bestdefensefoundation.org/donate
"Taking care of the ones who took care of us"
#DonnieEdwards is a former #NFL football player who has spent the last 22 years giving back to our military. He has done 9 #USO tours, visited many military bases and accompanied hundreds of WWII veterans and Vietnam veterans back to #battlefields
In April of 2006 Donnie Edwards brought WWII veterans back to their battlefields for the first time. Since that time he has accompanied hundreds of WWII veterans from the top of Mount Suribachi in Japan to the top of Eagles Nest in Germany. Donnie works tirelessly to fulfill the wishes and needs of our veterans and to give them the honor and respect they so readily deserve.
Your generosity will help to ensure the foundation is able to provide these experiences to veterans in the future.
The freedoms we enjoy today are in no small measure due to their sacrifices, let us repay them with gratitude and honor.

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
      Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
      Abraham. Lincoln

My grandfather died when I was 9 or 10 years old. Little did I know at that time what he did for this country. He was Omaha Beach 6 days after the main assault. He wrote in his journal that they were still bringing the dead off the beach. He was a lieutenant and he had an aid that was under his command. A German mortar shell landed and he watched his aid get blown apart by the mortar. Shrapnel teared into his leg and he was no longer able to fight. Don’t remember the exact date that this happened but he received the Purple Heart. I now thank every veteran both old and new each chance I get. Because treading my grandfathers journal taught me of the courage and bravery these men and women of back then and in current times have to lay their lives on the line for the freedoms we have in this country. God Bless our veterans and thank you for everything you have sacrificed in the name of Freedom.

One of the saddest shit I’ve ever seen was a 93 year old Japanese WW2 veteran collecting cans on the streets in Osaka.
America is one of the few countries that actually (at least somewhat lol) take care of their veterans.
The moment I talked to him and learned that he had fought as a Infantryman during WW2 over 70 years ago just to be cast aside like that made me feel the worst I had felt in a while.
I tried to get help for him, but he refused.
He told me that he could get by collecting cans so he was okay.
I understand it was pride that was making him refuse help, but I wish he had accepted.
One day he was gone. I haven’t seen him since.
It’s been 5 years since then so if he’s still alive he’s 98 now.
What a fucked world we live in.
This is one of the reasons I’m staunchly against war.
If a country were to threaten mine, then I will go and fight.
But god dammit war won’t create anything and it’ll only destroy.
I just wish none of this would ever happen.
Send the fucking politicians wagering these wars at the frontlines.

I live in France. The French have never forgotton the price the allies made...in the next village up from where I live there is a memorial cross with the names of 13 America soldiers killed that were ambushed by the Germans, the memorial is kept immaculate, twice every year the tricolour and flowers are laid and services are held. The names of the dead are known to everyone in the village, and there are even a few people that , as children, remember the incident. The memories fade, but in this little village in France, they will never be forgotton.

My great grandfather stormed Normandy on D-Day. Don Meeks. He bailed out of his boat and lost his gear trying to swim. When he finally made the beach, he had to use a fallen comrades weapon he told me. He had been shot in the ass and upper thigh but was so frightened and motivated to live that he didn't know until someone else dragged him to a med tent. He used to joke and say "Ladies love battle scars but I got one I can't exactly show off eh?" Love and miss him very much

I am a member of the American Legion and there are two WWII veterans left, one of them is my mother-in-law, She was a Navy WAVE in WWII. There should be some WWII vets there but you need to hurry because according to the VA, over 1,000 WWII veterans die each day. I was fortunate to live with a WWII veteran for 19 years of my life, he was my dad.

We are probably the last generation to ever feel the aura if these veterans who have seen the worst of humanity.
They have been to worst situation imaginable and has seen the worst side of humanity.
I hope the world would never see another world war, another human devastation and live in peace and harmony.
He knows how those comrades of him, his brothers looked like and he knows that they are buried lifeless and soul less under that soil. He knows that the young people of yesterday who had emotions, goals, who had senses and humour and stories to share, an entire life Infront of them, a family waiting for them. But everything shattered and he got to witness it all and is sharing that experience with us.
It would suck to say that most of my friend's either died recently or were killed during war when they were energetic youths and where are their graves. Ohhh!! They must be buried anywhere near. That sucks, really to even imagine that.
I can't even what they have lived and experienced.
They might have have seen their close friends getting bombed and had to carry their pieces and give them a grave to rest upon. They might have seen their buddies getting their head blown up and pierced by a bullet and who knows which bullet had his name on it if it wasn't for his luck and help from great late friends of him.
War brings the worst out of a human and it's sucks that war will last longer than me than you and than all of us.
Yesterday it was a different guy with ego and desire of power who began the catastrophe and now just the human has changed the consequences are same. Yesterday the nation was different but the impact is still real if not even worst.
Everything happened during this century be it the greed of usa, the ego of putin and all the terrorism which is specially affecting our beautiful middle east. The consequences are same. Soldier died the same way yesterday and today when hit by bullet on the head, just the people are different and era is different.
The battle of egos drowns the dreams of thousands of youths and kills the sons and wives and mothers and husband and daughters of millions.
War was cruel yesterday and it is cruel today if not even worst.
Whatever happened in middle east in Afghanistan in Iraq in syria in iran in Sierra Leone and now in Ukraine. whoever are the reasons be it Russia usa uk china or any nation. The leaders whom we and they trusted are all ready to expend the lives of youths just to fill their disgusting egos.
It's the warning whether we need to take out war from out world before it takes us.
Respect to every soul who died in war and who got to witness the travesty.

He saw the beaches of Normandy on a naval destroyer as an electrician's mate. He had a long career with Lockheed Martin and NASA after the war and was a well-known farmer back home with his wife Donna. He even met Walt Disney in the early 1960s on a private flight to Florida when Walt was making plans to buy the land Walt DisneyWorld sits on today. He told John about it and they became friends. He knew Buzz Aldren and Neil Armstrong as friends. My great grandfather knew many notable figures of the 20th century. My grandpa tells me most that I know about him. I'm named after him myself. We attended a local Rodeo, at the conclusion of the event, my 80 year old wheel chair ridden father needed to use the rest room. I pushed him to the back of a very long line. A gentleman in front of us looked at my father and noticed his veterans hat he proudly wore. With a loud voice the gentleman said we have a veteran here in the back of the line. At that moment every man and boy moved aside and gestured for us to move forward all the way to the urinal. God bless our veterans.

I am one of the lucky ones, my father came home from the war.He rarely spoke of the things he saw and lived through. I know it haunted him for the rest of his life, some times there would be tears in his eyes and he had a far away look in his eyes. He was remembering the horrors and lost friends. He once told of being in a trench and his friend went ahead of him around a corner of the trench. A mortar landed in the trench and his friend was gone. He would talk to one of my uncles who was there with him about it sometimes, and I would over hear things. He saw the concentration camps and the survivors. we have no idea what these men went through, but thank God they did. May they all Rest In Peace in the arms of the Lord.

Since i was a kid, I've always had nightmares as a ranger of WWll. I am 22 now and still have these nightmares. Only now I wake up in a cold sweat, yelling for Ma holding my left shoulder. The nightmares are lucid. I feel everything. Emotionally, physically and spiritually. It's weird. As a kid I was made fun of because I would pass out in class from sleep deprivation from all the other nights of having the same nightmare but in different perspectives. The teacher and students kept saying I was mumbling a lot of weird things and sweating way too much to be normal. Told me to head to the nurses office so they could send me home. Another weird thing? I can't handle loud sudden noises. Loud banging, screams, yelling, and other people crying. I've had people joke and tell me maybe its a past life I'm reliving every night. I do come from a family who have served in WWI & WWll. When I first learned that, it was a huge twist in the gut like someone had just stabbed me. I can't even go to a beach without having severe panic attack beforehand. I always respect our fellow veterans. I feel a powerful sense of family/brotherhood when I thank them first hand. Or when I'm out fly fishing, and l'll run into many, and we'll have long conversations.(some if not most not war related) a genuine one on one talk about life in itself. But some would even tell me I reminded them of their brothers in combat. I've broken down one person when they said that. They comforted me and asked out of curiosity and kindness on why I broke down. I told him of my lucid nightmares of it all and how I can feel the pain. Emotionally. He held me tight and he said "welcome home son". I quickly told him I am not a veteran. He just stopped me and continued to say "You have a lost soul who chose you to find peace. I'm sorry that you had to experience those horrible things as I did in my time. I hope someday you find peace with it."
I don't know what is truly going on or how to explain it but his words stay with me. To all veterans to see this? Thank you. Truly. You are my family2

My great grandfather was declared 4F for being 100% color blind, drafted shortly later, he fought in the Pacific as a B-29 ground crew mechanic in the 504th bomb group on the B-29 the Sitting Pretty, I have pictures from him of the Marine cemitary on Okinawa, I have pictures of ground teams across Tinian, pictures of the Enola Gay, the sights to be seen across there in black and white as he saw them, his unit was having a get together back at Tinian, he said, "I have seen all I want of that Island". After the war, he was about to be sent to Korea, instead got shuffled to the corps of Engeneers to be in the rebuilding effort, he became an officer and was in charge of the rebuilding, my grandmother was raised there in a chateau., he never spoke about the military, it was clear that his service haunted him till his death.in the hospital. He had the misfortune of being paired with a very ditsy Japanese Nurse who asked him what he was doing on Tinian Island. He stayed in to retire Brigaier General, Dan Brownly Sargent.i was fortunate to get to know him a little as a kid, I miss him so much, my grandmother said he cried tears of joy when he found out i wanted to serve in the military. Shortly after he died i nearly died from appendicitis, started getting in shape, bad car wreck, the chiropractor said I shouldn't have been able to walk, re-alignment therapy, another car wreck, re-alignment therapy, then 4 years ago I was crushed between 2 cars and died 9 times on the operating table, now I'm training again to enlist. I want to see the places that he saw, I wish I could speak to the people he served with, I pray for all those who died and thank them every day for their sacrifice.
