Fantastic review. Soooo thorough! I am watching because I already bought one, Intel, and need to inform myself now that have ... haha. And I'm happy to say, that by plugging in an external quality 4K monitor to the HDMI, and spending $125 more on new RAM, I've eliminated 90% of the compromise issues and have a real beast now at an excellent low low price. Que ganga!
I find it is very good. Perhaps not AAA, but a very solid blend of reasonably fast performance and moderate price. I'm old, so my game playing is slowing down, but I can get beautiful imagery and smooth frame rates on Sekaru Shadows Die Twice and Witcher 3. I play in 2k, but upscaled to 4k, currently using their frame upscaling, but the 3050 card does support DLSS, so, for example, when the remastered Witcher 3 comes out in a month, I should get even better graphics and frame rates. For budget performance, I have zero regrets. EDIT UPDATE: I did update Witcher 3 to the newer version that has DLSS, and I can run at 4K on High with strong framerates. Assuming that more titles will have DLSS, it will be a huge step up from the RTX2000 series.
Hey sir, I'm going to get the same product so I'd to ask which ext monitor are you using rn? are you using a separated HDMI cable or the one from your monitor? thanks
After comparing laptop models with rtx 3060, I will buy this one as it fits my budget. Despite having number of compromises, I think it still can performs well in gaming as it mainly focused on that rather than editing. Just upgrade the ram to faster one and dual channel configuration and you are good to go.
I’d recommend getting an omen 15. Since omen 15’s are custom built (or more accurately they have a few customization options), they take long to ship, but every once in a while an uncustomizable 3060 variant comes out for $1150. It is LEAPS and BOUNDS better than the Acer, looks better, and overall is a bette value for a similar price. With better performance because of its higher quality build. I bought it for my self and I am very satisfied.

I love this laptop, and I've been using this for about a week now, to put it simply; the battery is not good or bad either, the screen flexes when you put stress on it but the rest is perfect for me. I mainly use this for surfing the web, learning Software Development using Visual Studio 2022, and will use in the future a bit for online schooling. It's kinda overkill relative to my usage, lol. Overall, I'm happy to hear that most of the compromises can be solved by having an external monitor and increasing the ram by spending a few hundred bucks.
I bought this laptop and have been using it for like 1 and a half months now. I love the laptop. Tho it does thermal throttle a bit (in my experience) when gaming. It’s still a really good laptop imo. I guess I have never been exposed to more premium laptops. I’d say this laptop is great for me. To Mina sad that it doesn’t have undervolting. It could really help the thermals if it’s unlocked.
Btw I have the specs with i7 and RTX 3060. It looks like a deal ($1149). And I have not seen much throttling when gaming. I do see it throttle when I crank the settings up to max in Shadow of the tomb raider. It starts to throttle like after 1 hour.

Waited quite a long time to get a review of this laptop. Being pushed aggressively by the sales person in the stores. But i required your take on that. Thanks J!
9/10 don't trust sales people in most industries they only know fractionally more than the customer and its usually only information that they can use to get the sale (think to the average car dealership, they have salesmen AND mechanics, you don't even have to know how to change a tire and can still have a career selling cars) If you're buying from a best buy, microcenter or some other big tech store there is no requirement for their employees to have any sort of background in tech, and it shows in the hiring process, they want salespeople first, everything else second.
This is the best money could get me, and honestly... I think I'm okay with it. I've had worse, and it'd be my first actual gaming laptop, so I'm glad. It's already hard getting stuff locally or online here, so finding something and knowing "It wasn't a mistake" it's comforting. (And yes, yes I'm getting the 2021 model on 2023, that's called third-world economy for you..) Edit: Forgot to say! I got it bros! It's a fine laptop, but I wouldn't call it great. It's just good. Get an external monitor to push its boundaries.
Glad to see a laptop that still comes with SATA bay + 2 M.2 slots. The improvement is unbelievable, I've done some render ínstense work on blender, with ease. Everything has a limit tho, certain tasks used up the 6gb vram and caused crashes eg. Adding large clouds, while using experimental blender features, dense particle systems, high poly count models. Video editing 4k is a breeze, using DaVinci resolve. The only issue is overheating, watch temps, maintain vents and thermal paste. As owner, yes!! AMD definitely throttles the CPU on battery for the sake of power efficiency. Intel does too, but not as hard as AMDs. Would still go with the AMD though
Legion 5 is similar price for same specs but is just so much better. Acer just needs to redesign their devices just like what HP did with Omen and Victus.
If you consider yourself a "heavy gamer" please reconsider, i bought the 2020 model without properly looking into the quality of the laptop. The cooling is absolute garbage in my 1 year of gaming on LOL, DBD and NGS the fans would throttle and temps were 80+ even on league a game that doesn't have triple A graphics will throttle the fans so you have two choices set the fans on performance mode to cool it by 2-3 degrees and reduce the life span on the fans or keep the fans on balance and reduce the lifespan on the motherboard and risk overheat damage

Good on you Jarrod for showing us simple things like laptop internal parts (e.g. ram R8/R16, GPU wattage, CPU power limits etc) can change a laptops performance from a similar spec’d model to another by ridiculous sums such as 30-50% in some models gaming benchmarks. Your reviews and detailed explanation are vital for us consumers considering an expensive tech purchase such as laptops which are often kept for a number of years by users. Excellent job my man! Que ganga!
How is it performs now? Any good?
Yeah how's the performance

So now the question RYZENs, what's the Nitro 5 that is the more INTELligent option?

Thanks J!
so did you decide on this one?

Hey Jarrod! For clarification, the Acer Nitro 5 GTX 1650 would still be a good pick right? I noticed that you reviewed the RTX 3060, which I agree is a bit unreasonable considering that this is a budget gaming laptop.

The QHD, 165Hz model only seems to appear with the Ryzen 7 and RTX 3070 model as well as the Ryzen 9 and 3080 models. I'm not sure whether they'll have it with 11th gen and RTX 3060 models. That's all the info I have atm.
What do you think I should get for someone who's considering the 11800H and 5800H?
@@YohanCruyff97 what would like to achieve with the laptops you wish to buy?
@@joelconolly5574 The Acer nitro 5 is within my budget. I'm someone who likes to game so definitely for gaming but seldom hardcore games (1-2). I'll be using my laptop mostly plugged in and elevated so battery life wouldn't be an issue. With a thermal like the Nitro 5, is it better to go for the more efficient Ryzen 7 or should i just go for the better performing Core i7
@@YohanCruyff97 If I'd have to give it a go it'll probably be the i7 model for overall performance per dollar. Seeing you'll keep it plugged in most of the time it should be fine to sacrifice some battery life for it. That being said, in MY the i7 x 3060 model is closer to the R7 x 3070 model by RM200 more. So depending on the games you play the Ryzen model may seem compelling. I'd say get the i7 x 3060 and save the extras for peripherals like mouse or keyboard.
Ensiferum
really love them too 🔥
Hey Jarrod will you be doing a review on HP Victus?
Why do we judge this device only with the edition reviewed? Maybe, the one with rtx 3070 really makes a difference.
Was a rogue program triggering the dGPU on the Intel model? Those battery results seem abnormally poor.
Can you do a video on all amd laptops released till date and rank them? Or a comparison between Legion 5 pro and Strix Advantage Edition. Would been interesting.
Great video.. can you also review Nitro 5 with 5900hx and RTX 3070..
When I tried to download utorrent it crashed on my acer nitro 5 I tried downloading it but kept crashing I even checked TH-cam for the fix or google but nothing came up 😔 could u tell me a solution. Please
great video, if you have any chance please review msi gf65 the cheapest rtx 3060 laptop
Hey Jarrod! Should i get this laptop with r5 5600h + gtx 1650 or the msi bravo 15 r5 4600h + rx 5300m? Theyre about the same price in my country so i dont know which one to get
How about lenovo ideapad gaming 3, msi katana, or hp pavillion gaming ? Which one is better ?
I'm curious myself as well. Currently orientating between one of those. Though, I don't need the best specs. as the games I intend to play are not the latest nor extreme heavy ones
alienware X17
HP is more reliable 🎉🎉
Lenovo is great too. But have bad Wi-Fi cards. Very bad
I have the Ryzen 7 5800H and RTX 3080 version of the 2021 Nitro 5, and just doing regular office work, some web browsing, and watching a 30 minute video (50% screen brightness, 50% speaker volume) and I went from 100% charge to 15% in 1 hour 15 minutes. This is trash battery life
The Intel version having a thunderbolt 3 port is a good choice.
Cos you can hook up an external GPU for even more power if needed
I think you are too critical sometimes...
Don't take it as an insult...rather an improvement
I have 17' variant with i7-10750. And i really dont like the speakers, they are to week. But other than that its awesome. I was really glad that it has 2 slots for ssd, cause i just took an ssd with steam library from my old msi notebook and put it in nitro. And the most interesting thing - that the memory was the same to, so i just took 1 stick and put it in nitro too. And, can say it perfoms well.
x2 I have the 17´ variant and it performs well on every game. Most games are playable in ultra settings which is enough for me.
do you only do gaming laptop reviews? do you think you can do thinkpad x1 extreme gen 4.
At the moment I'm mostly focusing on gaming laptops.
