Great review as always. One thing I would suggest to improve subsequent reviews, is to comment on heat-sink fan disassembly. For some models, like my lenovo legion, it is impossible to remove top cover from the fans, which in turn, makes it really hard to clean, even when there is light to moderate dust. Intel version of the same laptop heat-sink has tiny screws instead, that enable fans for easy disassembly and cleaning.
I have the LOQ 15 with the rtx 3050, this is easily the best budget gaming pc. Easily runs titles like Phasmophobia on high graphics and COD MW2 on medium setting. Love this laptop to death
The only reason I prefer Legion is for the 99-100% sRGB screen, I need it on a gaming laptop cuz I like to game and I'm a graphic design student so colors are important Before I continue with the vid I hope LOQ have a high percentage color gamut
Probably not, we're quite limited by the plugin we chose to handle the table. Basically the way it calculates the prices on the backend to work out the % off ends up making it a text value so a simple sort by descending doesn't work. As for specs, they aren't separate fields either, it's just one string of text, so that would need multiple fields which I think would make it more confusing to work with. You can just type in a key spec in the search box, like "3060" though. We would like to sort price, but depends on future updates to the plugin, or if we move away from it.
I was a fan of my Legion 5 3060, so I got the LOQ 15" 4050 i7 as my work laptop. Compared to the Legion, it looks a little flashier but I found that the recessed rear ports prevent stubby dongles from getting caught when shoving it in a backpack. You mention you weren't able to get it to charge on a 100W charger, but mine charges just fine - though this may be a matter of hardware, the brick mine came with is a smaller 170W as well. Personally, it's been great for work where I only need to do heavy processing about once a week
@@nou1534 I'd say go with whichever one offers a better GPU. I never use all of the ports offered on the L5, and although the 165hz screen is nice, it'll eventually become overkill as more demanding games arrive in the future. the L5 does feel a little more "premium", but that's just a subjective thing and it's not something you'll notice unless you actually deal with them on a daily basis
I'm coming from the Legion 5 Ryzen 5800H with an RTX 3050 Ti to the LOQ 15 i7 13620H and RTX 4050. The Legion is by far a more premium feeling machine and has a very nice screen, but the bang for buck of the LOQ is pretty hard to deny, especially when you can pick one up for AU $1400, that is just insane. My only criticism of the LOQ so far is the fact I can't enable XMP because getting into the advanced bios seems to be near impossible, if anyone has found a way I'd love to know!
Idk which one to choose I found loq and legion for about the same price. Only the loq has 1440p while the legion has 1080p and also the loq has 4050 vs the 3050 of the legion. What exactly is legion better at? How is it almost the same price?
@@FantasticKruH Have you compared other aspects like display FPS and color accuracy? Also, I think the 4050 on 1440p probably performs about the same as a 3050 on 1080p, so personally i'd go for the LOQ. it's worth noting the QHD display probably uses more power than the FHD, so consider battery life vs display quality.
Hi, your videos on the LOQ laptops really helped me find the best value for my money. I picked up the LOQ 15 Ryzen 5 RTX 4050 early this year and it's absolutely amazing. Hey, Jarrod. Big fan of the channel. I would just like to point out that there's a small error in the displayed laptop specs at 1:05; the storage is listed as PCIE Gen 3 SSD when it should be Gen 4. You ofc say that it's Gen 4 in the storage speed section of the video, so you don't have to worry about it. I just thought you'd like to know.
I don't why but on lenovo's official website the net cost of a custom build loq 16 is less than a custom build loq 15 even after upgrading the battery of loq 16 to 80Wh. Both have exactly same specs:- i5 13420, 1440p 100% sRGB display , 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD. Even after upgrading the SSD to 1Tb in loq 16, its price still remains just a little bit less than loq 15

16:37 It's interesting how small the difference is between 4060 and 4070. Makes me want to see a full comparison between the two in more games. TSMC is the biggest semi conductor company today, and NVidia, Intel, Qualcomm, AMD, Apple, and others use their fabs. My IdeaPad has an advanced BIOS with way more information that I know. Anything from RAM timing, CPU power configuration, fan control to temperature tracker. Because im seriously thinking about getting this one, eventhough its a little cheaper
I don't have much to add, all that's covered in this video, we also have some new LOQ videos for the 2024 model and it's still one of my favorite budget laptops.
Hey Jarrod. How would you compare this with the dell G15 with same specs? I saw ur review from last year on the G15, but heard that they solved the issues u mentioned. Very much interested in hearing your recommendation between them
I have a genuine question regarding a gaming laptop I got form lenovo recently. I'm completely new to gaming laptops and just bought my first one a few weeks ago. It's a Lenovo Legion 5 and while it stays super cool while playing on battery, usually staying around 55 and rarely getting up to 60, once I plug it in the temps for both my GPU and CPU rise up to 65, even reaching 74 at some moments. While I know that those temperatures are complete safe, the device it self gets really hot. The bottom of it and even the keyboard. Even the plug of my charger gets hot to the point that it makes me nervous that it might be damaging the laptop and since this is my first gaming laptop, I am not sure if this is normal or if I have to give up on long hour gaming sessions and just rely on my battery. I only use my dedicated GPU during gaming. It's a RTX 3060 mobile, while my CPU is a AMD Ryzen 5 6600. So, are stuff that I am experiencing with my laptop normal?
Can't say I'd be worried about it, but if it's uncomfortable only in the places you normally touch while using it then it's an issue. Power plug is not a normally touched zone and should be ignored. Warner is expected with the charger connected as it will perform better and use more power, which results in more heat.
@@JarrodsTech I see. The usual touch zones, like W,A,S,D keys and space bar dont get hot, it's just the midle part of the keyboard and I don't even notice it unless I specifically touch it. So i suppose this is expected in gaming laptops. Thank you very much. Love your content.
I would suggest using external mouse and keyboard. Let the computer behave like an all in 1 desktop computer if you use the built in display. I prefer using an external monitor
I don't measure it over time at the moment, and not looking to add that complexity when I test 6 different performance modes/configurations. If you just mean all the data I currently show on one thing, I am also not sure how to do that in an easy to comprehend way, do you have an example?
Bought myself the LOQ 15 15IAX9 from JB Hi-Fi for $1279-I paid $1199 price-matched with The Good Guys, which is incidently owned by JB. Mine has the Intel Core i5-12450HX processor, 24GB RAM, 1TB Solidigm NVMe SSD and RTX2050 GPU. It's awesome!
I do have a request to increase game testing in laptop reviews like u do in GPU comparison videos. I know that takes a lot of time but it will definitely be worth it.
Not enough data, the reason we stick to 3 games is because we can compare with so much. At this point it would just be awkward to have one graph with RTX 30 comparison models, then another with different stuff. I like using the same results on all graphs to see the differences in different games. We used to handle this in the dedicated game benchmark videos, but we didn't get enough out of those to justify doing them, so canned them. Maybe we will add more when we change to new games in future like 5, but probably not, we'll probably stick to 3 but just add more resolutions as GPUs get more powerful.
@@JarrodsTech id recommend replacing one of the testing games you use with a cpu heavy game , like planetside 2 , so wed see both cpu and gpu stress performance
LOQ basically just a rebranded Ideapad, with incremental improvement, which happens every year... Maybe the name "Ideapad" sticks with budget professional line, so it would be cool to call the gaming line with "LOQ" instead.
GUYS!!!!!! You can have adaptive refresh rate and more features with a custom "Lenovo Legion Toolkit" instead of regular Vantage. It also can actually disable GPU while on battery, which was the only thing that actually helped my Legion 5 Pro Gen7 with 3070Tii

Feel great buying the LOQ 15 for 640 USD after seeing this video and your new video on 2024 models not getting any real CPU upgrades over last years models. Appreciate your insights, mate!
Are you sure the CPU you want to say is called R7-7820Hz? I have never heard of this CPU. LOQ 15 AMD version only has R7-7840HS and R5-7640HS two option.
Hi mate on friday I bought after long time of reading and watching people like you exactly the LOQ15 model with i5 13420 / Raptor lake and RTX4050 with Win11 for like 1100 euros with 16GB RAM and 1TB disk. The price gap for 4060 was too high for the titles I want to play, my focus are games like BG3, D3 and D4, Destiny2, Overwatch and maybe Tempest Rising. Tested Doom Eternal and Starfield which I didnt like I uninstalled after like 10 minutes of gameplay :D , I would say that its a really good laptop. The cooling is quite decent and even the 1080 entry level display is quite good, Im really happy with my pick. Few things which I plan to upgrade, these games today are f*** insane I need to buy at least 1 more SSD with 2TB ideally, this is nuts. Appreciate however that they put 1TB disks, I would go with 512GB or just sell it right away. The 16GB are maybe good but im planning to upgrade to 16GBx2, one thing I want to bring up I found one who replaced the realtek wifi card with an intel ax211 and mentioned that only with the latest raptor lake CPU's this can be done, that the replacement will not work with an AMD GPU
Planning to go for the LOQ RTX 2050 i5 12th gen 12gb ram 512gb SSD. I don't plan on playing high demanding games like cyberpunk, elden ring etc..I'd probably be playing games from the mid 2010s like Arkham knight or DOOM 2016. Is this laptop a good choice for me?
Hey Jarrod, I am in the market for a new laptop and I am looking at various 4070 options. I have narrowed it down to Lenevo Legion Pro 5i (i7-137000HX + 4070, 140W + 512GB SSD) at $1,579 and MSI Katana 15 (i7-13620H + 4070, 105W + 1 TB SSD) at $1,499. I am not willing to go that $2000 range and $1300-$1500 is the most I can spend on a 4070 laptop. Please advice me on the best available option for me in this range. And if there are any better alternatives from Asus or Gigabyte that I am missing in this price range. In one of your videos you said that 40 series cards till 4070 do not see much performance gains beyond 90-100W. Will 105W to 140W difference in power draw have any real world performance difference in the above mentioned 2 laptops. A comparison between Legion Pro and Katana showing thermals and performance would be great. There are just not many comparison videos on the internet for these new laptops and any advice from you would be invaluable. Most 3070ti laptops are also available in the $1400-1500 range, so even though 4070 is essentially equivalent to 3070ti in performance, getting dlss3 and frame generation at the same price point should be a no brainer now.
Lenovo and MSI are both fine gaming laptop companies, but I like Lenovo a little bit more. I own a Lenovo Legion 7 and I love it. Out of the two you listed the Legion 5i should perform better, the one downside I see is the storage. Having under 1 TB of storage is going to be annoying to deal with. I would recommend upgrading to 1 TB if you can. If not, that's fine. Upgrading storage is pretty easy because they do sell external hard drives, its just going to tie up one of your ports is all. But best bang for your buck you can't go wrong buying any of the Lenovo Legion laptops.
@@SeemsLogical Thanks for the reply, I have been doing a lot of research over the last few days and I ended up ordering Lenovo Legion Pro 7i with an i9-13900HX + 4090 + 32 GB DDR5 5600 + 1 TB storage. I also ordered a 2 TB Samsung 980 Pro that I'll install in the second slot. Based on my research I found Lenovo had the best thermals when compared to Asus G18, Omen 17 and Alienware M16. I crossed off any MSI products because hinges on my last MSI laptop were shattered which were "DIY" repaired and I decided to not buy MSI again. I also got a pretty sweet deal for Legion Pro 7i. It came down to Legion Pro and Asus G18, Legion had better thermals, better build quality and a more sleek look that doesn't scream its a gaming laptop, and on top of that I got a tempting deal so I pulled the trigger.
@@TheScientificSkeptic 4070 with 8gb vram is not a wise investment in 2023 if you wanna play at 1440p. I wanted a laptop that will last me about 3 years so I had to jump to 4080, but 4080 again has 12 gb vram unlike its desktop counterpart which has 16 gb. 4070 was available for ~1500, 4080 at ~2250 and 4090 ~2650. The big jump was from 4070 and 4080. And when I crossed that threshold I just ended up spending that extra 400 to max out the specs as I was getting a really sweet deal from lenovo sales rep after applying student discount and some coupons. It was around 2750 after taxes for 32 gigs ram and 1 tb storage. Historically the most bang-for-buck cards have been 4060/70 but this gen the 4080 is the most bang for buck and 4090 is another 400 extra for 10-15% extra performance. Greedy nvidia has completely neutered its 60/70 cards to push customers to buy 80/90. Now they are more expensive but they are also the most bang-for-buck card which has never been true before. This is a shift in their sales strategy since they introduced 90 card to completely hobble 70 and make 80/90 best value even though they are expensive. I will just hold onto this laptop for a year longer and delay building my next tower when I wont have to carry my laptop to classes everyday.

Would you be adding a spec filter to the gaming laptop deals site? And maybe a sorting function for descending / ascending price ?
Between legion 5 and loq 15 which do you think is better. Because of the gpu different i dont know which to choose
Idk which one to choose
I found loq and legion for about the same price.
TSMC is the biggest semi conductor company today, and NVidia, Intel, Qualcomm, AMD, Apple, and others use their fabs. TSMC can only put so much silicon at a given time, and those companies that use the fabs need to reserve it long before they will actually need it. Zen4 uses 4/5nm fabs, Apple usually reserves up to 100% of the fabs some months. AMD just focus on what will give then more profit since they can't do as much as they would like.

Be'lakor band is awesome! Very nice tshirt.

@@JarrodsTech Fan noice could be made same way as you do with others. First try that and we will see rest

@@JarrodsTech id recommend replacing one of the testing games you use with a cpu heavy game , like planetside 2 , so wed see both cpu and gpu stress performance

the 144Hz FHD LOQ15 or the asus zephyrus g15 r7 6800H + 3060 + 240Hz WQHD
which one's better?
Latter because screen is an integral part for a laptop
Did you buy an external or internal SSD for upgrading your laptop?
I'm going to buy an internal SSD
Planning to go for the LOQ RTX 2050 i5 12th gen 12gb ram 512gb SSD. I don't plan on playing high demanding games like cyberpunk, elden ring etc..I'd probably be playing games from the mid 2010s like Arkham knight or DOOM 2016. Is this laptop a good choice for me?
Another banger video, hopefully the slim 5i comes out soon
Do you think there’s a better laptop for the money for a creator? Thanks
awesome review
Thanks!
@@panic_diver , so, you ended up spending 2X your budget.
Hey Jarrod you had mentioned in your 4070 vs 3070ti video that a laptop 4060 vs 4070 video was coming soon. I was wondering whether you are still doing that video?
Still planning on it, just haven't had a slot for it yet.
That's Great! Thanks
Hey can you do a review on the Acer predator helios neo 16 line of laptops? They seem like incredible value for the price. I love the idea of a nicer chassis/thermals on more affordable units. I cant seem to find any videos that are in english on it yet....
Thanks!
How does this compare to the legion 5, is this a more budget version?
Yes. This sits in between the IdeaPad Gaming and Legion models.
