Those Nicklaus roars at the beginning of the telecast are about as intense as anything I've ever heard, literally like straight outta '86! I still remember tuning into this telecast like it was yesterday. Pity a couple more putts couldn't fall in for Jack!!

Jack's last hurrah, and my second favorite Masters aside from '86. Just to see his name on the leaderboard with Duval and Couples and Mickelson (at 2:58) was nothing short of astonishing. He transcended generations. Still the GOAT.......
Not just the ones you mentioned, but everyone on that front page had won, or went on to win, a major or majors. That's an all-star leaderboard of players anywhere from 15-35 years younger than Mr Nicklaus, and the latter was right in the thick of it. Amazing.

My Dad and I were trying to follow Jack that Sunday. One of my favorite memories in the 7 or so years I was able to attend tournament rounds was on the 7th hole that day. Jack sank the birdie, and we could only hear the crowd's reaction from ten people deep. One guy runs up, stops directly in front of us, gives a steroid-flared fist pump and yells "Jack is back!" And then he ran off, never to be seen again. It was unbelievable, and something I will never forget.

Tiger does come close (at least in wins, the stat that matters) but does fall short.
Jack Nicklaus did actually show up on some leaderboards during the '90s, it was only after significant hip surgery in the summer of '98 that he finally became incapable of contending. By that time of course it didn't really matter, he'd long since done it all.
O’Meara was so underrated… and his shot here on 18 for the win was the definition of clutch.

Yes! I went to the tues thru friday rounds. Drove from Augusta to Ohio and got home saturday and watched Jack on tv on Sunday. Poor O'Meara. I had even forgot who had won this one even though I was there. Truly this was Jack's Masters in 98.
Ben Wright was classic! I loved listening to and making fun of him as a kid.
This tournament had it all....from the Legends hitting the honorary tee shots to Gary Player making the cut, 58 year old Jack Nicklaus scaring the young guys (even with a bad hip) , Paul Azinger playing great after cancer, David Toms shooting lights out , Mark O'Meara getting his first pro major....all the great names Duval, Couples, Mickelson and others. Definitely one of the most enjoyable Masters for the fans.
Ken Venturi was wonderful,I especially like his little anecdotes that are dropped in like Hogan watching the flag on 11th from 12th tee to judge the wind,brilliant insights.
One golf analyst said “Ken Venturi knew Augusta like the back of his hand”.

At 1:46 ish, the Venturi analysis of the Couples' blocked iron into the water on 13 was brilliant
Mark and I went to high school together. He was a year behind me. I am the son of a golf professional but never played on the golf team; I was not athletically inclined. Wouldn't have made any difference anyway, our varsity golf team was so talented, Mark leading the way. He was always kind to everyone and had such a great disposition. I think my dad spoke to him more than I ever did but we said our cordial "hi's" in the corridors and breaks. Ironically, that show of emotion at 18 is the most I ever saw from him (understandable). Always leveled headed.
I got an autograph from him at the old LaJet Classic in Abilene,Tx way back in 1984. He was easy to approach and thanked us for coming to the tournament. He and Johnny Miller were the only pros I ever had do that. Class act.
RIP Peter Ousterhuis, superb player and superb golf announcer.

I've been a Jack Nicklaus fan/borderline groupie my entire life. In fact my wife and I and took out kids on a pilgrimage to Columbus, Ohio to visit the Jack Nicklaus museum on The Ohio State University campus. It was truly a great experience and what made the museum so special was the fact it was more about Jack's family than simply him. They had photos where he would hop on a plane after completing the second round of a tournament so he could be at his kids football games that night. He would then get back on the plane in the middle of the night and return to the tournament site for 3rd round and of course often would win. People often talk about his great victory in the 86 Masters at the age of 46 but I also point to the 98 Masters which may have been an even greater moment when at the age of 58 he shoots a 4 under 68 and finishes in a tie for 6th just 4 shots back of the leader.

Aye, and without my dad at birkdale finding his ball on 6th on Friday, he would have missed the cut..... Found his ball in the bushes, made bogy and the rest is history. Great champion in 98!

Justin Rose was 17 years old in the 1998 Open Championship. The final round was on July 19th. He was born on July 30th 1980.

I wanted Freddy Couples to win so bad. O'Meara's win seemed to come out of nowhere. He was right there, but I thought it was a Couples/Duval race, then O'Meara birdied the 18th and won it.
Crazy to think that if Jack holed those putts at 2 and 8, then not bogeyed 4 and 12, he'd have tied and been in a playoff. Nobody is supposed to contend at that age. The Bear's last great attack.

If there is ever a greater example of how EVERY moment and every shot in golf at this level matters it's in this tournament. On Saturday Freddy stuffs it at 13 from 200 yards and makes eagle - a day later one bad swing from 160 straight up costs him the tournament. Wow.
@Calvacade of Fred Couples 100% - and the crazy thing is he drove the ball beautifully for that entire back 9 - he just double crossed every important shot at 13 that afternoon (the drive and the 3rd shot). The Venturi commentary is so perfect explaining that - how when you try to avoid doing something you end up doing the exact thing that compounds the error. I think a lot of people remember this as a tournament that Duval kind of handed to O'Meara but I still think to this day it was Freddys to win. Also a huge moment that wasn't talked about so much was O'Meara at 12 blocking one onto a far too aggressive line that somehow stays up. It's almost crazy to think that may also have been the difference between him and Freddy and it was ironically the exact same thing that saved him in 1992 on the exact same hole! What a sport golf is huh!
Am i crazy or did Jim Nantz do this? If Jim Nantz ran for president i would vote-- he is smart, positive, has a sense of humor, knows how to talk to people (an underrated skill), and genuine. Probably the best broadcaster of all time.
I wish Freddie would've won the masters that year he was so close! I remember his 2nd shot at the 13th hole oh baby! Freddie has been favorite golfer of all time!
I remember watching this and thinking Jack may just pull this off again. Also, I hear people complain in current years about "lack of broadcast" time in the Masters... man, they should have been around 30-40 years ago when you never saw the front 9 broadcast live...
There’s something about this tournament that is ageless. When you see the golfer on the 18th green getting ready to win, it doesn’t matter what year it is, it looks the same.
Tiger has mentioned the roars for Jack from this round a couple times recently. So I said I've got to watch this round.
Best of memories
This was all Couples and Duval, then suddenly O'Meara has won the masters. It was was like, what just happened?
The understated dress (all brown colors), the steady yet unmemorable play, most importantly Mark was just unshakeable that day. Stuck to his gameplan and was patient all the way through. He stole it like a thief in the night those last two holes. With all those stars at the top of the board, the old vet beat an amazing field.
Got the only hole-in-one of my life on this day. Went and got in 18 in the morning, stiffed it all day. Nearly holed out on 14 and 15 for eagles. Came to 16 at -5; hit another one perfect and said "well that's got no way" and it 2 hopped and rolled in for the ace. 154, 9 iron! Of course 3 putted 18 for the 66. Came home and watched Tiger's big brother win and said to my friends "you can expect the unexpected today" and no one knew this was coming! Great job Mark.
PS. Why was Payne Stewart never invited? Guess they didn't get along too well

I have played golf for over 50 years and I have to laugh when fans say Tiger played against tougher and deeper fields. This is not a knock against Tiger. I think the 1998 Masters demonstrated how Jack in his prime would have dominated this field. I believe Jack and Tiger would have had a great rivalry with Jack prevailing over the long term.
If I could, I'd hand green jackets to Duval, Els and Norman. So close so many times.

Notice how O'Meara was a total dark horse . They talk about Freddy and Duval, but not Mark. I in fact was watching this in Gearhart, Oregon, at my dads condo on the 2nd hole with my girlfriend. We were BBQing Lamb Chops, I went out to flip the chops, totally expecting a playoff, and no one said anything, I'm waiting on the playoff and then my father chirps in, something like oh yeah, it's over , Mark O'Meara won. !!Classic

Also this for me is why Jack is still the greatest golfer of all time. I think Tiger is the best golfer the world has ever seen - I still believe Jack to be the greatest. To legitimately compete at the age of 58 at the top of your sport is simply astounding. Hey - maybe Tiger is competing and in the hunt well into his 50's - that has to be seen. Until then it's performances like this and even Jack in '86 that keeps him #1

Yeah, I remember watching this live in '98 and thinking it was a fight between Duval and Couples all day. That bogey on 16 doomed Duval. O'Meara snuck in at the end and it was like "Oh, he's won?" But he birdied three of the last four to take it. And then O'Meara won the British a few months later and never won a PGA tournament again.

This was one of the most exciting but ultimately disappointing Masters that I've watched. Nothing against O'Meara, but he's 5th at best of who I would've wanted to win. First would've been Jack. If he could've pulled that off, I don't care whatever else happened in the future, you'd never convince me he wasn't the greatest all time (I still think he is). Second would have been Freddy. How can you not enjoy watching him and root for him? Duval would've been next. One of my favorite players and a beautiful, easy swing second only to Couples. After that, it would've been cool to see Zinger come all the way back from cancer. Like I said, I like O'Meara and this is nothing against him. But there were some many other better stories that could've happened with a shot here or there.

Dear Masters. Would you please not show a picture of the champion on the picture of each video? It makes it all more exciting if you don't know the champion when you see the final round. I personally cannot remember who won in 1999 for example but judging from the picture I guess it was Olazabal. Too bad because I hoped it was Couples :(
at about 1.02 Ollie is walking over the Hogan Bridge and the commentator says, "Olazabal who has 2 Green Jackets".. how prophetic is that? he did win his second but the following year..!!

Went from rooting for Tiger who was out of it fast to rooting for Jack during the Sunday Open by Nantz then when Jack finally ran out of gas I was rooting for Couples even though I liked O’Mera Mark won the tournament with a terrific 18th hole putt.
