What I liked most about the video is getting a glimpse of how the team works together. By showing their work flow he showed how they would have to communicate to get all this done, and that's waaaaay more informative than anything tech related, which you can just read about and know. Interacting with other humans, with opinions and who have bad days, is a lot harder than learning how a server works, and him showing this is very enlightening to anyone struggling to manage a team of content creators...or a team at all really.

Why does Linus need so many servers just to store videos? Just post it on TH-cam and delete the dam data. If TH-cam went down and you lost your videos so what? There wouldn’t be another site anyway like TH-cam where Linus could suddenly thrive to the point he’d need his old videos to repost and no one would wanna watch old videos anyway . And TH-cam will probably not go down anytime soon so just ditch the local servers Linus stop trying to pretend your a legitimate large tech company with your “servers”. Datacenters with storage servers actually serve clients your videos are hosted on TH-cam so Don’t waste money on servers. Oh wait your sponsored so you pay for nothing
It’s because they are shooting in an 8K capable camera from red, which is one of the few today that can shoot in that resolution. Why would they shoot in resolutions that even Hollywood filmmakers don’t normally use? To put it simply, it's for future-proofing the content, you’ll see having 4K footage today will make it watchable for a good couple of years, but having 8K raw files means they can go back in the future and re-render in 8K, meaning the footage will be good for even more time. Now for Hollywood movies such as you mentioned, today they are shoot mostly in 3k~4K resolutions, in some cases even less like 2.3k, but why would they go low when there is bigger res available? As the Cinematographer Steve Yedlin says, resolution isn’t everything, cameras from Arri goes up to 6K, which is less than Red although Arri has a better sensor, which generates better footage, that’s why Arri cameras are so popular in Hollywood studios, plus Steve argues that even footage shot in 2.3K can be upscaled to look as good in a 4K Blu-ray master as a movie shot in 4K and mastered in 4K. But of course, you can upscale up to a certain point until the footage starts to look bad. For reference look Planet Earth from BBC, it was shoot in 720p, which at the time was high end stuff, but since then the display technology improved quite a bit, so they can upscale the footage, but past certain resolution will look like shit, the Planet earth Blu-ray master is up to 1080i, in the next few years will start to look dated. Compare that to Baraka which was filmed 13 years earlier, it was shot in 65mm film and can be scanned to very high resolutions without losing any quality, that's because film is naturally high res, while digital will be stuck to a certain time frame of the technology.
This was, by far, the most informative video you and your team have made (at least to me.) Stabilization was good with that gimble... But autofocus and brightness were lacking Can we get more details on the transcoding, syncing, etc.? I'm particularly interested in what you use for the syncing
Yeah the footage would've been better if they used the Note 8. That phone alongside the Pixel 2 have the best video stabilization of any phone right now.
The auto transcoding is just a built in feature of Media Encoder. I have no use for it myself, but you can tell it to watch a folder and auto transcode that with whatever settings whenever a file is put in there. I personally want to know about that syncing software too though. That is exactly the sort od setup I have wanted to build at my house for a while to make sure our stuff is safe, but without the concern of putting it in someone else's hands.

One day I found my mom uses Google Drive and she downloads the files whenever she needs to use them and never opens it again after she downloaded it because she never knew that they were saved. She had 30+ copies of every file saved no joke!
They spend thousands of dollars to invest in a petabite to archive footage so they don’t have to download the video and have a lower quality. The dedication Linus Media Group has to there production quality deserves so much more respect
As someone who is a massive fan of understanding the background process behind executing on tasks, this was a really cool video and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would love to see more of them for other elements of the workflow!
Many people crying over 'you only 1080p' are the same people who will never understand the basics of downscaling quality from raw footage. If you are working with textures for a game, you'll understand real quick why a 8000x8000 image downscale to 1024x1024 is a million times better than doing it from a 3000x3000 image. Same applies to video footage, a video that has 4k, downscaled on TH-cam by their encoders, will be much better than uploading the same footage in 1080p directly and then has to be re-encoded by TH-cam.
Where the big difference is isn't actually straight down-scaling, its that you can stabilize, reframe ect on the fly during editing if you shoot over resolution and a little wider on the lens. It also gives tools more information to work with in order to perform seemless changes, like rotoscoping without distorting edges. You can also adjust exposure or colors a bit in post without loosing information in the final output by using a wider dynamic range than the final uploaded video. This makes a big difference to real production workflows that can effect viewership.. frankly the tiny advantage in video quality from direct down-scaling does not... especially once its been re-rendered by youtube.
Software Man I may be retarded because I didn't understand anything you were saying when you talk about your techs and I was planning on going to college for tech and coding

I remember Linus talking about making more videos about server equipment and us having to "deal with it". Well, still can't get enough. :P
@@treehugger3615 I think you missed my point. I don't necessarily desire a generic howto, what I would like to see is how THEY solved these things. I remember working at a startup where we would do a render or transcode. We had a monster desktop machine assigned to each task and we were barely keeping up. This is in the days when a terabyte drive was a 500$ piece of hardware. I understand the tiered system and having a transcode dedicated machine, and having the shadow backup running. We NEVER deleted until the check was in the bank for a project though, then we made the archive copy we called the "Evergreen" that had the raw data and finished project. That served to allow a re-edit to future proof against higher resolutions, the re-edit done from original footage and not the down converted stuff to fit youtube or (Gasp) broadcast TV bandwidths.
Great Video Linus and team. I never realized how intense your production workflow really is. I still don't really grasp the concept of your workflow but that's okay. You're on a whole different level as far as a video production house. How does Canada classify your company? Like a Hollywood production house? Lastly, thank you for shooting on an iPhone and Android device. The video wasn't as solid as your R3D footage videos but it still came out really good.
Its all about time management. You want your staff and the machines they use to be as productive as possible. Imagine having to go around and manually insert/connect the Red camera mags into each of their PC's just to get the footage onto them. You don't do that, you download the footage onto a server that they can then all access... but you want to have fast connections between the workstations and the server too. Then when you encode, you dont want your staff machines sitting there encoding while the editor then takes a break because they can't do anything, so you off load it onto another server for that... Then there is back-ups...
That isn't even a particularly complicated server and network setup. If they really wanted to do that they would build a high availability cluster for the hot data so they could sustain a full server failure without impacting work in any way.
IMO the video quality is average. I see little point in shooting using a RED camera in order to upload to TH-cam... and the server set-up is sensible with redundancy built in.
Piers H The thing is, when you shoot on a shitty camera, you have shitty footage. When you shoot at 8K 60FPS you have more control in post production environments with more resolution to work with. You also have anazing footage when TH-cam launches new features or changes the way it handles video compression.
Hell yeah, great setup! Who in your organization designed the network and wrote the scripts for the watercooled server to auto start the transcodes. I love how you use automation to increase your peoples workflow rather than replace them. Keep up the good work.
+20 security points by blurring Linus' hands while he's typing a password. -100 Security point by using the built-in Administrator account. -500 points for not using AD.
It'd be great to see you do a in depth walk through of a company's server room and compare it. If you could get into Pixar and see how they set up their servers and editing stations, that would be so cool.
As a fellow (sort of former) TH-camr - I've often wondered how workflow could be tweaked to accommodate such massive footage - I'm really impressed with your setup! It's so freaking efficient! I don't even know what else you could do to streamline it more at this point.
Lol. I can hear/see the cringy culture shock as it emotionally sinks in you're working with HUNDREDS of Terabytes and maxing out a 10 Gbps card on occasion. It's mind boggling to think of what was even possible only a few years ago and prying those expectations and habits out of your own head to make a job, easier, possible and more resilient is still staggering.
Statikk Shiv Windows Server licensing is stupid. Microsoft change the way it works like every other year. One note though is it when Microsoft do business audits, as long as you can prove you have a license, Windows doesn’t have to be activated, saving the hassles if you end up reinstalling windows multiple times in a month
Backups are soooo important.... I use a main freenas server which contains all my work docs, etc which I use everyday. This then automatically backs up to another backup freenas server every two hours. This backup server then backs up to the cloud once a day. This is all completely automated and all done by freenas software and works great... Bit tricky to setup, but once implemented you can pretty much set it and forget it....
Instead of changing every editors drive mapping, you could use windows DFS, for a seamless transition to a different source. it does more, I think it fits your needs perfectly.
Do people not know how YouTubing works Video is the largest file size and it takes forever to edit and upload So they need a way to store and manage it Also, incase any video is taken down, they still have the footage
That workflow can be improved and automated a bit more with some simple scripts and maybe a central program...The shared drives can be a little crazy too. Too much manual operations and steps is where you can have wrong files accidentally deleted.
Linus why not just use a hyperdeck for recording it saves the footage and audio from an exteral audio scource already synchronized on a ssd that you can plug in to a computer and throw the footage right into premiere pro. The one i use with the hardware has twelve audio scources from a single audio board for xlr microphones

That isn't even a particularly complicated server and network setup. If they really wanted to do that they would build a high availability cluster for the hot data so they could sustain a full server failure without impacting work in any way.
you clearly dont have a clue of what's required to run a media company
IMO the video quality is average. I see little point in shooting using a RED camera in order to upload to TH-cam... and the server set-up is sensible with redundancy built in.
Theres nothing complicated about this setup, hes actually kept it quite simple.....
This was seriously impressive. Not the balls. To the walls hardware, but especially how well everything works together.
1:47 for a second I thought that camera chest mount rig was two separate AK's leaned up against the table.
Why do you think they call themselves lmg?
it really do be like that
+20 security points by blurring Linus' hands while he's typing a password. -100 Security point by using the built-in Administrator account. -500 points for not using AD.
Exactly my Thinking...
And with AD you can use DFS-R and for the mistakenly Delted Files you got a Backup + Shadow Copies.
Just store it on thousands of USB drives
lol
usb drive raid arrays
Lol you should go back and watch his whole room water cooling video, and you'll see they weren't far off from that at one point! Haha
RAID 0, of course! :)
mdd1963 oh god
This video is 13:37 minutes long. Nice...
Naper i got 13:37 on mine i approve

Napert360ggTGpl what do you mean? It is 13:37

12:08
when he winks to himself because he knows he is going to edit this video
13:05 "active windows". lolz
BTW he talked about it a while ago. If I remember correctly it's a windows server version that you can't buy a for from Microsoft anymore.
there is no real reason to activate it probably, just to take off the watermark is not worth the 100$
Roland Lawrence lol
Roland Lawrence that is a virtual machine(for downloading minecraft hax on the server untraced;))
+Akuma Otaku companies get audited and penalized if they are found using pirated software. It's not the same as pirating it for personal use.
11:43 look behind Linus...
ddesupersam THE DENNIS IS ESCAPING
Bruce Caron Its not "That Dude", it's 'The' Macro King, Taran, King of Macros
Thanks for the behind the scenes look! I wanted to do something similar. Always great to see workflow updates.
It'd be great to see you do a in depth walk through of a company's server room and compare it. If you could get into Pixar and see how they set up their servers and editing stations, that would be so cool.
lol why has max a Nail Polish design folder? XD 12:33 ( at the bottom)
Reldies they had a channel super fun video about max
Edit: after she left
Yeah i watched that video, still dont know why she left though :(
Reldies They said she is just leaving. She wanted to do something else
mistertoffeetruck She moved to her boyfriend's grandma's house with limited internet access
Febrian Rahman Adi LMAO
Correction: 11:15, you've not consumed 432TB, that's what is free. So 777 - 432 = 345TB which is what you have consumed.
345 TB !!!!!!!!!!!!
I have underwear larger than 345TB :)
Pffff, that was when they were recording the video... I wouldn't by surprised if they have used those 90 TB by now... :D
im still using 1tb 5400rpm hdd....
Same lol
Same
Only the dead can know peace from this madness
I'm using an even smaller one
Because you don't need data center for watching TH-cam
Aurimas Labanauskas i know but when he saw a 230mb/s write speed and call it slow, i got jeally bcs my hdd only tops at 100mb/s and i call it fast...
Incredible workflow
13:00 Has a server that costs more than my whole house
Still doesn't buy a Windows licence
Love it.
Statikk Shiv who cares lol
Statikk Shiv Windows Server licensing is stupid. Microsoft change the way it works like every other year. One note though is it when Microsoft do business audits, as long as you can prove you have a license, Windows doesn’t have to be activated, saving the hassles if you end up reinstalling windows multiple times in a month
Me, dumbass
Its not a server license though. its an editing pc.
Not exactly, depends if the PC is registered into an Active Directory, so the license is managed by the local server
IT Sys admin here. Most companies even medium sized businesses easily have up to 10 - 15 servers.
I have 3 servers in my house, just to store my data. about 1.8pb of storage
I've got one physical server and 10 virtual machines. :D
It s time for exabyte project!
Wooo! Kamloops resident here, love the shout out to our city.
We like Kamloops
11:43 In the Background :D Made my day ;D
That Adobe Prelude tweet and response was on point. I lolzed and got quite a chuckle out of that one.
We need an udpate on this!! This video was so cool. I've watched it many times!! Keep up the good work!
Thank you Linus for making me remember this video so I can use real-time backup in my Uni assignment a year later
Where is the amazon parts list for this setup? 🤩
apekatt2007 that will be some long list
Long and expensive
Has anyone translated the key input-output noise into the correct password yet?
lol, that is just some high level "HACKERMAN" shit.
_You done did it now, boy!_
Lol
Thats actually possible, though you'd need a form of neural network trained to the specific user and keyboard, as well as much clearer sound.
The password is “LMG@SERVER”
13:37 minutes long.
Coincidence?
I think not!
What is his electrical bill?
Yes.
alcowherd7 didn’t think about that one
42
Now THAT'S a video I would watch. Average power draw and electricity useage.
Very interesting question, would love to see a video about this!
i want more videos like this, really great video. i can tell you're not guessing about any of this stuff since you literally built it.
6:57 still stuck at the paper-label of "Server Room" @Linus?
1:48 i thought those were rifles for a second, leaning against the desk
That'd be impossible since he lives in Canada.
@@sbdnsngdsnsns31312 you can own guns in Canada
wait those aren't SMGs?
Dam that camera gimble is really cool lol. I don't even make videos and I want it.
Gimbal.
Awesome setup. Im impressed with the auto transcoding server. Never would have thought to do that
Instead of changing every editors drive mapping, you could use windows DFS, for a seamless transition to a different source.
it does more, I think it fits your needs perfectly.
Zipp4Everyone Or maybe not.. :P
So I’ll admit a lot of that was over my head, but still bad ass
0:06 that time Linus' server room actually looked good
Not all that fab...
It's so cool seeing what real life use is given to tech on your channel. Other people just talk specs and never show behind the scenes
When you finally clock out 11:40
Those Super Mario World roms
Do people not know how YouTubing works
Video is the largest file size and it takes forever to edit and upload
So they need a way to store and manage it
Also, incase any video is taken down, they still have the footage
this is super cool how far you have come, feels youtube can really make you popular and rich.
more power to you bud.
@Linus Maybe try using TotalCommander instead of "Windows Explorer"
Linus: We film 8k,4k at 60fps
Me: I watch 360p at limited 30fps
720p in 30 or even 420p because 1080p 60fps totally eats my data mobile 20 GB plan...
Bruh I have 2 gb
@@boomrr07 nobody cares
11:43 look in the backround
That workflow can be improved and automated a bit more with some simple scripts and maybe a central program...The shared drives can be a little crazy too. Too much manual operations and steps is where you can have wrong files accidentally deleted.
Ooh
They buy servers by making videos about how they buy servers - SOLVE THE PARADOX
J A hmm.
Can't serve up much without servers. Servers are what brings the food to the table.
9:57 You don't need to remap network drives if you use the Windows Distributed File System. Look it up in the Windows Pro IT Center.
I use those same supermicro servers at the data center I work at, except with 4tb nvme drives
Well why is the video 13:37 minutes long Linus?
its 13:36
it says 13:37 here tho
Oh
That just starts the video over for me.
There is no 13:37 you can change the "t=2s" in the URL I would assume.
Parker Stephens Ofc for that reason: because it's l33t
1:00 Send help
12:50 WHAT!!!! That’s incredible!
a petabyte? haha, my seagull pics take up more space than that
mmm my 64k seagull vids
C2Lception noone cares tbh
I see you're a man of culture as well
josh sanderson exactly, which is why I have all the seagull pics to myself
XXXpunisherXXX
U perv
When you have money for a petabyte but not a Windows licence
Dont know where you spotted it but its probably a remote activation issue.
I don't see why they would buy a licence for a terminal if the terminal is not for regular use.
its his editing rig. obviously its under regular use.
Not sure what computer that was on, but it's not like it really matters anyways. Might as well just save the money for something cooler.
Wait... no one buys those anymore do they?
man it must be cool working at a place with just tech heads :P
Ya no dought that would be cool. It sucks sometimes to talk tech to someone that has no clue what you are saying.
Dont forget Dennis Tips!!
Your test failed
What about Colton lol
Linus why not just use a hyperdeck for recording it saves the footage and audio from an exteral audio scource already synchronized on a ssd that you can plug in to a computer and throw the footage right into premiere pro. The one i use with the hardware has twelve audio scources from a single audio board for xlr microphones
