Dome needs to face front to lift up easily (ie one position to easily pop up so it’s not constantly lifting up). Side panels - push the outer edge closest to his legs in to pop the front edge up slightly. Blue manipulator arms and do,e panels also open with a finger nail. Middle leg only comes out by inserting fingertips in the notches on either side (which I much much prefer over the twisting dome of the original…might sound good on paper but try posing the old R2 and get a headache trying to match the dome to the right length of the middle leg). That said, I totally agree that Hasbro at the very least should have put a QR Code,on the cardback that could be scanned with your cell phone to take you to an explanatory website if they weren’t going to add an instruction booklet - they put the dang booklets in figures you don’t want it in, but leave it out with a figure that truly needs it! Still, a 1000% improvement over the original wrong scaled. mis-proportioned, and just bad R2, but they also missed so many things that Figuarts still gets the top spot for best 6” scale R2-D2 figure! Misses include why didnt they integrate the Periscope like the Kenner R2 managed to do over 40 years ago? Zero reason not to build it in. Also, the dome panels are the easiest to lose pieces yet there’s no storage for them in the pop up neck (that I’ve found). Little slots to slide them into or even little peg holes to snap them in seem a ridiculous oversight for the “solution” to lost droid parts. The yellowish plastic used for his body is an eyesore and just moe cheap plastic Hasbro has been using. If made with the same quality plastic of the Figuarts figure the details would also be crisper and the doors easier to open. Still, much improved over their first terrible “effort” but can still be improved on. At least whoever designed this one bothered to check the scale which definitely did NOT happen with the first one (I still want to know how the heck that ever went into mass production…must have been the same drunk employee that approved the even worse under scaled IG-88 and IG-11 figures, the too tall original Boush Leia and too big/bulky/tall Bossk! At least they seem to have some degree of dedication to quality now.
Saludos
Thanks for the review Sir Fly ! I have had the SH Figuarts R2-D2 on my shefl as THE defnitive version, ever since it was released years ago. Having bought this new Black Series R2 & comparing the two in hand, I have to say the Black Series R2 is as close to the SHF as you can get, and almost exactly the same scale wise, so credit to Hasbro where due - plus this BS one is a tad more sturdier. Now I have TWO definitve versions !
3:25 which one of these 2 R2 figure sizes fits in the Vintage collection Red Five X-Wing? I've been trying to find one of those R2 figures for while I'm trying to get X-Wing pilot Luke for at the same time. Any ideas or suggestions?
Strange mine is white like the older model. My only problem is the so-called storage for the attachments. Couple of them fell out and it was hell getting the head up and getting the parts out. The periscope barely clears the edge.
After so many years of waiting for a correct scale Artoo, I'm really not so impressed with this. Wrong shade of white, the blue isn't much better, missing details, weird engineering, cheap paint application (all the silvery bits had some black here and there). Oh, and missing rollers. I'll wait to see if the Mandalorian version will be different and then decide.
So glad I found this video. I had no idea the head came up to store all the bits...
Thanks for the review and tutorial.

Forgot to show and add the two blue front 'arms' also extend out (with a tiny flathead screwdriver) but don't really do much.....

This was very helpfull. Thank you very much.
At least he won't yellow in 20 years time. Hopefully they use a bit more white on the box release for Mandalorian.
Doubt it, likely the exact same plastic.

@@kevinmarshall410 Neither. These are 6 inch. For Vintage Collection you'll need a 3.75" R2.

Great review. You help me a lot. It was very useful.
Excellent!

I think the "yellow" white is sort of a halfway point into his grimey and dirt-covered appearance in the films but not really committing.
Love the 'not really committing' 😀. So true!!
Pre-Yellowed Plastic? No thanks.
