Incubating Duck Eggs in the Janoel 12

  • A few months back I ordered the Janoel12 off Amazon after i heard a few reviews of it being a decent, inexpensive, and simple incubator to use. Since I had never incubated eggs before, I figured I'd give it a try before purchasing a more expensive model.
    I collected 4 eggs from our Khaki Campbell duck, Kiwi, who was bred with her boyfriend, Howard the Second, the Indian Runner. They incubated at 45-55% humidity for 26 days at 99.5. degrees, with a 30min-1hr cooling off period after 1 week. At 26 days I placed the eggs into lockdown and raised the humidity to around 70% and lowered the temp to 98.5 degrees.
    I actually ended up adding 2 more eggs the day after the initial 4 went in. 100% of them developed to a full duckling, but for whatever reason only 4 actually hatched.
    The hatching process was so fun and exciting, I think come Spring I will be getting a lot of use out of this little incubator!!

    I just bought one and it read in Fahrenheit instead of Celsius. As a metric system moron, and an average American, I was very happy with this.

    How did you increase the humidity on lockdown? Because I have this incubator, yet I don’t have any humidity options.

    Just got this incubator in the mail today. How do you measure how much water you need to add when it gets low.

      Hi there! This incubator holds water really well for me. Since our humidity has been so high this summer I've only needed to add a few tablespoons every few days. Others have added 1/4th cup to a 1/3 cup every few days. If you do not have a separate humidity gauge to measure it, just make sure you aren't putting so much water that fog and droplets are forming on the sides. That would be too high. There are a few super cheap hygrometers you can buy on Amazon that I use in my incubators to double check the humidity when I'm unsure. Hope that helps!

    They are piping! OMG! Question ...did you keep the temp the same? And what about humility? I’ve been seeing conflicting advice. What’s yours seeing your little peepers did well during their hatch.
    Thx

      Yes I lowered the temp to about 99 degrees (37.2 C) and raised the humidity by adding about 1/4" of water to the bottom of the basin. If yours are hatching though thats a good sign! Just watch to make sure they aren't getting stuck in the membrane if its too dry. They usually pip then take 24 hours to hatch but if it takes any longer than that you might want to add some water to help them out!

    the key issues with all incubators seem to be the eggs turning and humidity. this seem sto be the only small unit that seems to work well.

    Ok I have 0 experience with egg hatching so I have a few questions about this incubator and hatching chickens in general. How often do you take the eggs out to candle them? And how long are you supposed to leave them in the incubator after they hatch? Also just any other tips in general about this incubator

    • @oliviakramer8435
      @oliviakramer8435  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually people candle around day 7, you will definitely be able to see development at that point and can weed out any duds. I would candle them again around half way to check and make sure they are all still alive. If you candle you can watch the aircell at the large end of the egg grow from day to day. That is how I monitor humidity. There are charts with diagrams of what chicken or ducks eggs should look like in stages of development. Air cell too small = humidity is too high. Air cell too large = humidity is too low. I try to leave them in there for 24-48 hours after hatching, if you can, try not to open the incubator until everyone is done hatching. The humidity can drop from opening the lid, and that could make it hard for the ones still hatching. If one or two eggs are taking longer and you want to take the already hatched ones out, you can. I usually spray some extra water in the incubator after quickly grabbing the ready ones out! Hope that helps!

    The reason the bottom comes out and is lower is so that the ducks don’t bang their heads on the turner

    Did you spray the eggs with water after day 10?

    • @oliviakramer8435
      @oliviakramer8435  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did, I think I started after day 7. I just open the top for about 30 mins, spray with water, then put the top back on. It's supposed to mimic the mama duck leaving the nest for a swim then going back!

      Thank you for replying! I’m currently incubating cayuga duck eggs and was wondering if I had to water them because I kept getting different answers on google

    • @oliviakramer8435
      @oliviakramer8435  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bb6_David Barajas if you candle them with a flashlight you can check on the development of the air cell. There are charts if you google image search “duck air cell” or something to that effect you can track what the air cell should look like. If your humidity is too high the air cell will be too small, if it’s too dry the air cell will be big. Hope that helps!!!

    Nice video thx. I just bought this incubator and put 5 duck eggs in it today. We will see. Suggestion, you don’t show your face in the video. I was like - what’s up with that?. Is something wrong with her or what? I checked one of your other videos. You should show your face in your videos. :).
