Honestly, if breeding had started when there were 100+ individuals left, they'd have had a chance, but not when the original breeding stock was 15.
Hybridizing them with similar ducks is the only way to save them from becoming too inbred to even be able to hatch, let alone survive.
This breed of ducks will not exist for more than a few more generations... Its pretty sad really.

The Keeper but then again, some animals have made miraculous comebacks such as the Californian condor and the Hawaiian Crow, where their populations were less that 20 breeding pairs. I think the condors were down to the single digits at its lowest.

@@The_Keeper if they can get the breeding enough generations removed it would end up ok. If you breed with third fourth fifth cousins you are ok. Its the first cousins siblings and parents breeding together that is the issue.

The Hook Bill is a breed, not a species so they are not naturally found in the wild. They have been bred to have those characteristics.

Every time you open the incubator during hatching (including pipping) you lower their chances of survival because of the sudden humidity drop which can get them
shrink wrapped by the membranes inside the eggs. It seems harmless because you don't see anything dramatic happening when you do it but it affects the chicks.
Also, all of the commonly hatched birds can survive at least 24 hours (some even 48 hours) inside the incubator while they "absorb" the remainder of the egg yolk
and there's absolutely no reason to take them out before that. The last couple days of the incubation cycle are commonly referred to as "lock down" for a reason.

Love y'all's videos a ton! Been watching for a long time and love to see the care you put into every animal! As a waterfowl biologist, I do think I have to point out a couple things about hookbills, just for some clarification and fun facts!
1.) They aren't an actual species of duck, and are just a breed of domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus)-- the same as most farm ducks. This is important to note for population status purposes. The FAO has listed them as an "endangered" breed, but this doesn't have any impact on natural systems, like a wild species would (wild species are classified by the IUCN or individual governments). Essentially, they have fallen out of favor for commercial farmers, being replaced by other breeds (or chickens, in this case).
2.) That bow in the bill doesn't help or hurt foraging, and it probably came about by accident as farmers selectively bred them for laying. They tend to be frequent layers, and were extremely common when duck eggs were household staples in Europe. When chicken eggs were found to be more consistent, there was a switch from ducks to chickens, and commercial farmers stopped breeding hookbills because they weren't as profitable as chickens.
Sorry for the long comment! Just wanted to clear that up for anyone that might get confused by other people calling it a species!

I'm sure you've hatched a lot of eggs but one problem I see is that you open the incubator too many times during the time the eggs are setting ,every time the incubator is opened even for a few seconds lowers the humidity and the chicks dry out in the shell and die ,once the eggs are set, the incubator should stay closed with high humidity until 24 hours after hatching date .

Greetings from Serbia! I also breed various types of animals. I would like to give you a few tips that will be useful to you in raising ducks. When buying eggs, always keep in mind that there is a possibility that the parent flock is not fed properly. I advise you to always make a hole in the egg near the air chamber on the 26th day of incubation in order to increase the chances of hatching. You can make a hole with any sharp object. I would like you to use this advice next time. It proved useful to me. I wish you good luck! :) @white hous on the hill

Come to think of it, one of the other youtubers, I watched periodically hatched this breed of duck and went into their history and why their on the brink. I think he too had to drill into some eggs to save some of the ducklings due to it being a defect of their inbreeding/low gene pool, some don't make it others get an underdeveloped egg tooth and their very particular on hatching temp, moisture and when rolled.

I had similar experiences with Indian runners and Muscovies this year (haven’t kept ducks for a long time) and came to the conclusion that they were slightly to big to hatch. So I’m going to try just doing 40% humidity next time with 60+ for last 3 days same as I do for chickens. I have a brinsea ovation advanced so it has the same accurate humidity control. Judging by your candling I think they might have been on the large side too. Did they pip internally? Water spraying actually pulls moisture from the egg as it evaporates of the surface, so maybe if you had better success before at same humidity the spraying might have helped them lose a bit more weight.

I wish you were more clear with you terminology. Just mentioning that this is a breed of domestic duck and not a species of its own would be helpful. Mentioning that their 'critically endangered' status is through livestock registries and not the IUCN would be better. Breed extinction is still a big loss, just ask pre-contact dogs, but it isn't the same thing as extinction of an entire domestic animal or of its wild forebears.

I found out that ducklings do much better under a broody hen (or another good mother bird) than in the incubator 4/7 survived in the incubator whereas 6/6 survived under the hen.

My mom used to tell me that when she was a kid they had this breed of ducks, and she was shock that as the years passed they became easily sick and started dying for unknown reasons, and then the worst happened..... All of their duck died, I'm really happy to see that this breed is trying its best to live❤️ I hope you can help this breed repopulate cuz my mom told me that they are great egg layers

Awwwwwww!!!!! I love, love, love watching your hatching videos. You are the best at showing the whole process! Very cool that you were able to get a couple out of the total number of eggs. I had never heard about this breed before so pretty awesome to learn about them and watch the hatching process here. Thank you so much for sharing that with us!

Thank you for increasing the population of critically endangered species! You're a hero! You're up the learning curve, and future results can be better. Got to mention, the way those eggs were packaged and shipped didn't look good at all. No wonder so many didn't even develop at all, and one was even broken!
