I can still see the ball hitting the back of the net in my head like it was yesterday, standing in the east stand with my father as a 13 year old...one of the happiest days of my life...
I saw the story recently from McAteer's perspective. He said Bono sent a helicopter to take him to Slane and come out on stage but when he was told he thought it was a wind up and went on the piss with John Aldridge instead. Sure enough there's a bit on the video footage where Bono says his name like he's supposed to appear and nothing happens! 😂
1 of the best days of my life..was watching this while on holiday in spain.in a irish bar very drunk.. i think i was only 16 or 17.. but ill never forget that day..
Back when Ireland could put out a credible team that dared to pass the ball around a bit. The Dutch had so many chances in that game but couldn't convert. Iconic goal from McAteer that he will always be remembered for.
I found out about this great moment through U2's performance at Slane Castle. "Close your eyes and imagine, it's Jason McAteer." *Edge with the guitar solo* gives me chills every time now that I understand the reference. Cheers from America!
Want to feel real chills? watch Robbie Keanes goal against Germany in the 2002 World Cup. Fuckin hell, its 14 years later and most Ireland fans still get goosebumps watching it, I was 11 yrs old watching it live at the time and couldn't believe it. It was then I found out why they call it the beautiful game.
Yeah, I was out on the town that night and some of the DJ's were giving away tickets to see U2 at Slane haha It was a fantastic night. I was happy for Ireland but Germany 1 England 5 was just unbelievable
finest display of irish team ever.. they played ground football instead of game of hoof.. and beat almost everyone with it. credit to MacCarthy for that.
remember exactly where i was when this goal was scored-me,my brother and my da going absolutely beserk in some tiny pub in lanzarote on our holidays.what a brilliant goal for the crowds response alone!
watched this in the lansdowne end and it was just mental , the athmosphere in the ground that day was something ill never witness again , nobody left for an hour after that even the dutch stayed and they wwere out just shows the good blood with ourselves and our dutch friends ..how many more battles will we have inyears to come .hopefully lots
watched this in mcguires limerick with a old mate of mine,,now deceased rip dave hourigan, the place erupted when mcateer took this chance, what a finish!real roy of the rovers stuff, and still my all time favourite ireland goal,c,mon robbie and the lads in macedonia saturday night, keane for 50.
Superb team that Ireland was probably in my opinion our best ever well capable then off getting to final considering a very average Germany got there although in my opinion no one was beating Brazil 2002
Amazing atmosphere that day. I have been to big games in Ireland for gaelic, rugby and football but nothing has come close to matching the noise and passion of the fans when we beat the Dutch.
Back when we had some quality players. 20 years of John Delaney really put the final nails in the coffin to the point where we now only compete with the minnows of world football. It’s sad. We were down to 10 men at this stage against a Dutch team that had players like Stam, Cocu, Overmars, Kluivert, Van Nistelrooy, Hasselbank, Van Hoijdonk, Robben just to name a few.
I remember this well. It still hurts looking at it. Especially when you know that 2 keyplayers were suspended from supposed drug use. Those players were Davids and De Boer. I hope we will never experience such a game again.
I was there and it was one of the best games ever played by an Irish team against a top quality Dutch side, Roy Keane was outstanding that day he ran the show.
I was actually in Dublin watching this with a friend in bar on Temple Bar! Ireland knocked Holland out with 10 men! Then on the same night the Germany 1 England 5 game haha Great memories
Fouled twice and it didn't matter. Yet another goal impossible if not for Roy Keane. The greatest center midfielder of that generation. Will always miss watching him play.
if this video doesnt get u up for tomorrow just give up,this is great motivation for us fans that will be in croker cheering on the boys,C'MON YOU BOYS IN GREEN!!!
Probably the best ever day watching Ireland at home. All out other big results were acheived away or at Finals competitions (Euro 88, World Cup 90 & 94) so this is head and shoulders above anything else that happened at home. I'll never forget that day sitting on the south terrace bucket seats. When Kelly was sent off in some ways it was a blessing as Overmars was destroying him. Admittedly the Dutch were a far superior side and played better on the day
Back when we would beat a team like Cyprus 4-0 away from home without breaking a sweat. Nowadays we're just praying we can get a draw against them or sneak a goal.
My dad was in a pub in Washington when the goal went in. He always remembers the atmosphere in the pub. Luckily he was home that week bc the week after that game was the 9/11 attacks
van bronkhurt, de boer, overmars, van nistelrooy, kluivert, hasselbank, van de saar, van bommel and jaap stam were all playing for holland that day. an amazing victory
what a great goal :-) I remember dis day comin home 4rm a match n my manager tellin us ireland were winnin and we caught the last 10 mins on the radio....and the commentators on radio 1 kept calling japp stam the man with no hair haha got a bit xcited :-)
I was working at a corporate bash for about 500 dutch fans with two other blokes in a hotel close to Landsdowne rd that day. When McAteer score there silence apart from the three of us in the back corner. The black looks we got. A bonus was the dutch fans had planed to have the bash go on 'til the wee hours. After we won they weren't that inclined and we got to pack up and go home way earlier and still got paid for the full day
Yes, Sir it was:) Thanks for your observation. There is a great sporting rivalry between our football teams, your early goal against us in the 2004 world cup qualifyers cost us dear! However the friendship between Albania and Ireland endures:) Peace and best wishes to you and your family my friend.
I remember this match and I still do not know how we got this result on that day. A man sent off, Kluivert missing chance after chance and us looking the second best team on the park for most of the afternoon. But we took the one chance that came our way and on that basis were deserving winners.
Isn't it amazing when the penny drops with McAteer..................."I've scored". It's like a delayed reaction. What a player what a goal what a memory.
How Ireland won that match still baffles me. Gary Kelly had been sent off 5 minutes before the goal. And previous to that the Dutch had us pinned back for the whole game, missing chance after chance. We got out of jail that afternoon, and like a cat we used up all our "9 lives". Perhaps thats why we are so crap at the moment !!
Roy Keanes from Mayfield, not Cobh. And you'll still find kilbane singing the national anthem! He had the class to learn even though he grow up in England
When it's Spring again I'll bring again Tulips from Amsterdam With a heart that's true I'll give to you Tulips from Amsterdam I can't wait until the day you fill These eager arms of mine Like the windmill keeps on turning That's how my heart keeps on yearning For the day I know we can Share these tulips from Amsterdam
The Netherlands was arrogant at that time. We thought we could beat Portugal and Ireland in their home countries. @ Porto we became 2-0 but Pauleta made it 2-2. At Landsdowne road jason mcateer scored the goal that knocked us out of the competition. holland was in shock at that moment. We didn't went to the world cup 2002 were I think, with the generation van Bommel, Cocu, Kluivert, Van Nistelrooy we could have won the world cup
Being Dutch this is difficult to watch. But damn, the Irish supporters may even be better than the Dutch ones. Holland is my number 1, but Ireland is the land I support next!
@loopstheloop Yep!! When McAteer was playing for Sunderland he brought Roy Keane's book with him. McAteer sent a ball-boy into Man Utd's dressing room with the Keane book, and got Roy Keane to sign it for him !!! Think it was that time Keane elbowed McAteer in the head and McAteer was all like *write it down in your book ya cant*. LEGEND !!
I can still see the ball hitting the back of the net in my head like it was yesterday, standing in the east stand with my father as a 13 year old...one of the happiest days of my life...
I'd you were calling for a free for Keane also
i was at the u2 concert at the time ... when bono said "beautiful goal" ... we jumped sky high in joy ... LONG LIVE IRELAND
Wasn't at the gig but I have the DVD. Bono always said this match was the "greatest opening act they ever had"

Finnan was a class act
The Cruyff turn was cruel.
@@johnkelly3549 “Your dare use our own spell against us?”
Forgot he was Irish, lol. Fantastic play from him. 👌
100%, Great player.
finest display of irish team ever.. they played ground football instead of game of hoof.. and beat almost everyone with it. credit to MacCarthy for that.
oh yes forgot too they scored that goal when they were reduced to 10 men.
English b team
Beat the Dutch at their own game. Brilliant.
@@abhouston1 And just as successful as the English A team

What a fun squad this team was, and their 2002 world cup was a hell of a run.
Superb team that Ireland was probably in my opinion our best ever well capable then off getting to final considering a very average Germany got there although in my opinion no one was beating Brazil 2002
is this the goal Roy Keane was talking about
Think so that's why I'm here
Why I’m here too, lol
James Beardmore 👊🏿
Good ol Jon
Same
Close your eyes and imagine, it's Jason McAteer!
U2 :-)
The single loudest roar EVER in Lansdowne.........
"Now Roy Keane, you can always depend on him." I agree !!!!
He was awesome that match.
Amazing atmosphere that day. I have been to big games in Ireland for gaelic, rugby and football but nothing has come close to matching the noise and passion of the fans when we beat the Dutch.
u2 played in slane that night what a day
I was there. Most amazing atmosphere I've ever experienced at a match. Unforgettable. Well done Trigger. :-)

even worse now
the best generation of Ireland, unfortunately keane wasnt involved in world cup 2002
was watchin dis in a pub, 9 yerars old and the place went MENTAL happy days

i think we owed you one after euro 88! you did have a great euro 2008,hope we both meet again in south africa
After some of Ireland's matches in the 1990 world cup I think this was the happiest football day I ever had.
Never forget this the old Lansdowne shook to its Foundations that day , place went mental 💪
Brilliant. Wish we still could play like that!
Roy and Jason friends here, no love loss now
The good days of irish football, we believed we could beat anyone at that time.
10 years today :D
what a goal

McAteer's greatest hour and the old landsdowne roar

I remember being thrown half-way down the stand when jayo scored that unforgetable goal!
Listen to the crowd. Amazing!
Roy Keanes from Mayfield, not Cobh. And you'll still find kilbane singing the national anthem! He had the class to learn even though he grow up in England
My name is Jason McAteer and I had my 9 yr old step daughter that was me...hilarious.
keane took overmars out of it 2mins in what a great tackle
I love the part were Hamilton says: "And now Roy Keane, you can always depend on him...."......ha ha, hilarious
Cause when we try we beat Holland 1-0 and go to the World Cup
true do you know of any video of keanes tackle on overmars at the beginning of the game?
Roy Keane tore the dutch defence to pieces in this move. If only someone could step up to the plate in the current squad.

I'm still wondering why Netherlands didn't qualified for the 2002 finals... What a team they had
My god what a moment
Anyone have a vid of Keanos tackle in the first minute? Cant find it anywhere.
The Netherlands was arrogant at that time.
We thought we could beat Portugal and Ireland in their home countries. @ Porto we became 2-0 but Pauleta made it 2-2. Landsdowne is gone, its been ripped down and the Avia stadium is nearly finnished. Also Croke Park is an amazing stadium, holds I think bout 80,000
what is there to practice? am i missing something here?
it was actually Louis Van Gaal managing the dutch team that year, I think Dick Advocat went back to manage them after van gaal.
