As an England fan who went to that tournament, we where dreadful, not taking anything away from Ireland who where decent, one thing I always remember where the Ireland fans who where absolutely brilliant

Ireland were decent I think is an understatement, played a great Russian team off the park and IMO were robbed against Holland, McGrath's header, dunno how it wasn't a goal, and to top it wim kiefts offside fluke. They surprised me but I think Ireland had great individual players. They were better than decent.
For the ones saying about jack with his hands on his head after the goal...that wasn't from shock..he was in the dugout and when Houghton scored he jumped and smashed his head off the dugout ceiling and he said he was rubbing his head in pain ...what a legend big jack and what a magical time we had following that team ...some memories....

Growing up in Galsgow as a Catholic with a father from Donegal, not surprising he felt Irish. Same goes for a lot of the lads who played for us that were born in England. Their parents would have seen "No Black's No Irish No Dogs" signs all of the place if they themselves didn't see them. That, coupled with the bullshit the RUC/British Government was doing in the North of Ireland, pretty easy to see how a lot of kids that were born to Irish parents in England felt more Irish than English

I'd have gone for Ireland's victory over Italy in '94. Beat a genuinely top class team there, who later went to the final. This England team was decent, but not contenders. And they had a miserable Euro '88 in general.

Today is exactly 32 years since this match, the English are a total disappointment from the beginning to the end of the competition in the group, while Ireland had a chance to get a visa for the semifinals in the last match of the group against the Netherlands.

well after beating Yugoslavia 4-1 on their own patch you would have hoped for more. But this was when tournaments had no duds in them so playing catch up was always going to be hard.
Makes me chuckle this, yeah you won the match but England pissed all over Ireland but couldn't get the ball in the net, 17 attempts to 2, Ireland still knocked out in the first round was hardly something to celebrate, England 88 great team just unlucky in the Holland game hitting the post twice in the first half. I remember as a kid visiting the Middle East and they would replay the English Premier league games on TV there. When I saw this euro cup the English looked to have an all-star lineup that would sweep through the euro cup competition but quickly realized that the English league was bottom tier who’s players couldn’t match up against the competition from these other euro countries.

Give me a couple of days" when obv an Irishman would've said yes immediately. But silly as the rules are, Ireland aren't wrong to exploit them. In fact they'd be mugs if they didn't. But Scotland were 100% Scots so well done them.
