Due to moving to a smaller home, we had to declutter over 10 years' worth of stuff. It was a difficult process, with lots of emotional highs and lows but I learned some valuable lessons through the process which I share in this video.

I am what I consider a minimalist and what I say is the most important lesson is that when you get rid of things you don't like, suddenly everything you look at it is something you value or love. Sounds obvious but looking around and seeing only things that make you happy is such a wonderful sensation.
Yes! That's so true to be surrounded by the things you truly love! Thanks for watching ☺️
This is a very thoughtful video. I recently lost a baby that would have been my 9th child. I'm rather old now , 47 and don't believe I will have anymore babies but im struggling with parting with baby items, it is very emotional for me. Also, You have very beautiful blue eyes.
Thank you for your kind comment. I'm so very sorry for the loss of your child. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to even think about parting with baby items. I don't think that is something you can rush. We're all on different paths, so one person's process may not apply to someone else. I have memory boxes containing sentimental items relating to people (and pets) who have passed. They are a huge comfort, knowing I can look inside and "reconnect" at any time ❤️
"I wasn't ready to let them go" points to the importance of decluttering at one's own speed. Sometimes, we need time to make the 'let it go' decision and no one else can make that decision for us. Time to stop feeling guilty when we are "not ready"...yet.
Yes definitely! Whilst some approaches to decluttering work for some people, they might not be appropriate for others and that's okay ☺️ If we want the changes to be sustainable we have to make them in the way that works best for us.
I’m slowly decluttering my home. My parents left myself and my four siblings a six bedroom home to declutter after they both passed away in 2021. They resisted our efforts to declutter their belongings when they were alive and able to. They lived there for over 50 years and it felt overwhelming at times.
I'm really sorry to hear that. It can be so hard for the people left behind when there is so much to sort through 😔
Truer words were never said ! We assign more value to material things than they truly have . Brilliant .
Thanks for watching, Laura ☺️
My girlfriend was not a collector of stuff but she would declutter periodically whenever the mood hit her so she was never overwhelmed with stuff.
I think decluttering regularly is a good way to prevent it building up again. It's something I'll need to keep on top of ☺️
Love, gratitude and peace 😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And to you too! 😊
It is dreadful when you have to let your beloved pet go - my Charlie dog meant everything to me, and I think of him every day, he passed over the rainbow bridge about 4 years ago now. I now have Madge the rescue greyhound, and I talk about him most days to her, she is herself, and Charlie will never be forgotten. These are the most important things, as you so rightly said, and I have so much stuff I need to get rid of in my home. The only thing that really matters to me is Madge, and myself, and as long as I have food and drink, and a roof over our heads for the two of us, and clothes to wear, then that is all that matters really. Thank you for your clarity on life, and thank you for this video. Blessings from Jilly & Madge, from a sunny West Devon, England. xxx
Jilly, your comment made me tear up! It sounds as though Charlie was a real blessing, and I absolutely love the name Madge for your beautiful greyhound. I imagine you have some wonderful times together in Devon which is an amazing place. Thank you for your lovely comment and I'm glad my video was helpful ☺
@@ThisEditedLife Thank you for taking the time to get back to me, it means so much. xxx
Video idea - please consider doing a video on the book "Goodbye Things" by Fumio Sasaki. After the autobiographical section there are three sections with specific principles for the journey towards a more intentioned minimalist curated life.
Thanks for the recommendation! 😃
Interesting video, thanks! Very sorry for your loss, I'm 2 years past losing my furry friend but I shed a tear when you shared your story. They are truly precious!
They really are precious! I'm sorry for your loss as well. Thank you for watching ❤️
First of all, I’m so sorry about Cookie.❤🙏🏼 This video was just the push I needed to begin tackling my clutter today!!
Thank you for your well wishes about Cookie! ❤️ And, I'm glad the video was helpful to start your decluttering!
Andrew Mellen says "your grandmother's teacup is not your grandmother", Cass/Clutterbug says "things are not cats, they don't need homes".
I love these quotes. Thanks for sharing 😊
I love this whole video . I can relate and connect with so many aspects you bring to mind n this video. Thank you.
Thank you for your lovely comment! I'm glad you found it helpful :)
This is a really nice, thought provoking video. I watch a lot of minimalism/decluttering videos. Yours really speaks to me. I can relate to all 10 lessons. I'm sorry about your loss. I lost my cat unexpectedly 4 weeks ago. I miss him so much! I just subscribed.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it and thank you for subscribing ☺️ I'm so sorry for your loss. Our pets are family and life isn't the same without them ❤️
I do like to use or diplay one item, from my friends or family that are gifts or a rememences. When I see those items it does help me think of them.
That's lovely ☺️ I think items like that are important.
What a wonderful honest video. I am also struggling with the deep grief of losing a pet. You have given me some motivation to start going through all my “stuff” like I am about to move to a smaller home. However, my husband saves EVERYTHING! It is difficult. Thank you! ❤
I'm so sorry for your loss; it is incredibly painful. I wish you all the best with your decluttering, and your healing ❤
Thanks so much for this honest reflection on your journey so far, a really helpful summary, to encourage and inform others. I've been on a similar journey myself over recent years, and can identify with all that you shared. To me, minimalism is a way of living freely, generously and fully, holding things lightly, rather than just implementing a system/rules. It's not about living without, it's about living with enough. It has taken me quite some time to really discover what it means to me lived out in practice, in the day to day decisions. I am still enjoying learning as I go along. Helpful to know that you, and many others, are on the same path 😊 thanks again!
Thanks, Deborah! I love what you said about "living freely, generously and fully, holding things lightly...". I think that encapsulates it beautifully! I'm still discovering what it means to me and I'm looking forward to learning more. All the best to you, on your journey ☺
Thanks - I'm so glad I found your channel and blog, really enjoying your content so far and looking forward to more!
@@deborahgregg7455 thank you so much! It's lovely to have you here ❤️
What a beautiful way to conceptualise minimalism! Thank you Deborah.
Thanks so much for keeping to the point- very helpful information and so so sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful little furbaby 🐶
Thank you ❤️ And thanks so much for watching ☺️
Speaking of recycling through stuff: I realize I am just shuffling papers + items. I am not truly decluttering. I want to keep in control during decluttering. I have a hoarding tendency. It's hard to not ADD items. I have adult attention issues.
It definitely takes more effort to not add items - I find that, too! I guess moving things around can help us feel as though we're doing 'something', especially if decluttering makes us feel like we're not in control.
It's tough!!!
It is!
