Decluttering isn’t the only part of minimalism but it can teach us many valuable lessons about our relationship to our belongings. A large proportion of minimalists get decluttering wrong. The risk of getting it wrong is that it can put them off from pursuing minimalism altogether which is sad because it can have such a positive influence on your life.
So if you’re a minimalist or you’re interested in adopting a minimalist lifestyle, I explain the ways that minimalists get decluttering wrong and what you can do about it.

    Slow and steady is my motto. One drawer per week. Yes it will take forever BUT gives me the freedom and calmness of the activity. It takes me about 16 weeks to go through my entire home including the garage. Then I start all over. My home has improved from what it used to be.

    It's more about attachments to objects than objects themselves, unless there's a compulsive spending or hoarding situation or you're paying for storage. I'm not attached to my stuff. I appreciate it, I use it, and I can and have walked away from it. That's a lot less effort than debating over whether or not to keep a thing. This trend of assessing objects for their value ...good grief.

      I think it's great that you can walk away from items ☺ My difficulty is the memories attached to certain items - some might remind me of significant periods in my life, and that letting go of the item may somehow erase the memories of that period. Logically, I know that's not true but it shows how powerful our emotional attachments can be ☺

    Be careful about changing insurance. Do not just look at the price. Check the level of cover very carefully and this means the exclusions as much as what is stated as covered. Also, check how the excess is applied, not just how much it is. You might be surprised how this works. Comparison sites do not give you this information, so look much further into the detail.

    My main problem with decluttering is the amount of " unsure" , " just in case" items, although I have to say I think I'm getting better at that now and feel generally ok when I've sorted it .

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Glad you're feeling better about it 😊 I think it helped me to relax my mindset about "unsure" items and reduce the pressure of "I have to get rid of them". If I give myself more time to think about it, I generally can come to a decision I'm comfortable with.

    Good points. For me, the point and popularity of “decluttering” is to realize and examine just how much I spend on stuff. Is it important? Do I use it? Did I need it? or need six of them!? Looking at cost per use is handy. I look at hours of work in relation to cost. Do I want an Air Fryer when I don’t enjoy cooking and eat fairly simply? or have the space to hold it? I enjoy the space and free time when I keep things minimal…essential.

    I have noticed on quite a few minimalism sites that there is pressure to 'declutter'. I really do not like the term 'declutter' which in itself devalues the items themselves which, presumably were bought for the 'right' reasons at the time of purchase. I believe that taking time over reducing items is the best way to make a meaningful reduction of personal goods. The idea of taking a black bag into a clearing and. basically, binning everything can lead to regret. The route to a simpler life is certainly not just about clutter it is about freeing the mind.

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      True, decluttering is about getting rid of things we don't need, use or love. Sounds like it should be easy, but for some of us it is not. And there are many reasons for that. I've been on this decluttering jig for 15 years. But I keep recluttering, while never really getting to things I find most difficult.

    Decluttering can be a One and Done solution in that for many people they can do an initial big excavation, and then of course things come and go in usefulness.

  • @ros8986
    @ros8986 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    ok - this is what you need to know about decluttering. It is NOT the individual items, it is whether the overall AMOUNT of items is interferring with your life. Various things you have mentioned are ways to excavate one's life, because for so many people it reqally is excavation because the possibility of having a life is buried under the burden of their stuff (taking care of it, tripping over it, cleaning it, trying to find something, etc). I have craft supplies that I had not used in 20 years - no problem because they fit in a briefcase. The problem is when people want to do decluttering "right", stop trying for "right", try for "sane".

    I don’t declutter things that are a maybe. I use the container concept instead. Where is this item going to live? Are there other similar items that I can consolidate? After consolidating, then I use the container concept. Putting my most favourite there first. If that item doesn’t make the cut that’s ok. It’s still one of my favourites but not the most favourite. If there isn’t room then I grieve but the container won out.

    Do you have some in depth ideas about paper declutter? There's an internal aspect of "paper tasks" that can promote stuckness. Even designating a drawer for things to be dealt with can promote chaos INSIDE the drawer 😢...

      @@ThisEditedLife Thank you so much for answering! And what is your mindset when working through the folder? What do you do, in order to get yourself solving the things that need to be solved within that paperwork?

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I look at what paperwork I really need to keep. So, if it's a policy document (e.g. life insurance) then I keep it. If it's a policy that renews yearly (e.g. car or home insurance), I shred the previous years and just keep the most recent (for some reason, I used to keep all the previous years statements!). Of the statements/documents I do keep, I have paper copies just in case my husband needs access to them (i.e. worst case scenario if anything happens to me). In terms of bank statements, I've chosen to go paperless, so if I need them I can go online to view them. Any policies or accounts that I've closed/terminated, I don't keep those statements either. I hope that helps? ☺️

    I don’t use the rule of declutterring any clothes I haven’t worn for a year. My question is, why haven’t I worn it? If it’s anything to do with unpredictable weather, special occasions which happen at random intervals, or injuries which have stopped me doing an activity, I wait.

    • @ThisEditedLife

      It's certainly good to ask "why" ☺️

  • @hazelp1831

    I never do decluttering challenges because I think it piles on too much pressure and I always seem to end up with an unsure pile. Slower pace is the way it works for me.
