I went through that paralyzed feeling for about 20 years. I finally got it together about two years ago after lots of TH-cam videos, and I'm still on the declutter journey.
That’s such an amazing story and one I think many of us can relate to!! TH-cam really helped me get started and feel more confident in decluttering ❤️😍
My fav that helps me is asking myself regarding non-sentimental items is, “Would I purchase this item again if I lost/broke this item?” And if so, “How much would I spend if I were wanting to repurchase this item?”
Packing party is a new term for something I have been doing for decades. I put the bags/boxes beside my tv watching chair and sort into keep/donate/throw out while enjoying my programmes. As soon as the donate bag is full, it goes to my car to be dropped off. Throw out is thrown out at the end of every sort and keep is put away properly ASAP.
Thank you Becky for this video! You are a great help!!! Since last Monday I have decluttered so much. I asked a friend over last Monday to help me be more ruthless . Happy to say I decluttered 192 items (out of that I’m sure 100 were hangers). Since then I have been continuing on. I have a large basket collection in the basement which I Rotate. I Started with nine bins, and now have five bins. I have gone through clothing and stationery as well. I am happy that my husband has been decluttering as well. We have an unfinished basement that was getting pretty messy. He has been going through his media things and has donated and trashed so much. I know it helped with all I have been doing. Thank you!❤
I do not do the packing party for decluttering. I just go in each room and pretend I’m “moving” and make the decision right there and then what I keeping and what goes out. Has made such a difference without making a mess or being overwhelmed. 😅
Thank you for adding in a psychological perspective to declutterring. It is so important to train our brains how to process what to keep and what not to keep.
I go look at the space really well and then walk out. I go chill somewhere and think about the things in the space. When I go back, I’ve already made many decisions in a very calm way.
Mind blown!! 🤯 LOVE THIS! Never thought about giving my stuff a “grade”.. (and I was a teacher, too)! That’s brilliant. Thank you! I was too emotionally attached to too many things, now they need a grade to pass and be able to stay. Boom. 💥💪😎 Doing this, this weekend!
I’ve been on hiatus from my storage and organizing endeavors. I recently unloaded a whole bin at the goodwill donation center. Felt Wonderful! Now I’m refilling the vw with more items to also go! 🎉
Hahaha I put on a top this morning that I’ve avoided wearing. I got changed by lunchtime. It was too baggy and too much fabric to tuck into my jeans. It’s in the pile of things ready to go to Thrift+I have a bag to fill and it will be filled and sent next week, after the Easter holidays. I’m really enjoying the decluttering journey. I also have a pile of books to send to Ziffitt also after the holiday. The app lets me scan the barcodes on the back and they are checked and then I get paid for them. It’s a great way of helping get things out of here. I look at things and ask myself whether I’d want to pack it if I moved house? I’m giving myself three years to work through my things
Oo that’s such a cool idea (ziffitt) I’ve never heard of that and I’m sure a lot of this community would love to use that website! Thanks so much for sharing!! ❤️❤️
Ha it's funny with the Rule of 7s because 70% is the lowest B grade that you can get in Canadian schools and I had 2 drawers to put my daughter's t-shirts away, naming the upper drawer of shirts the A-Team and the next one down the B-Team. I probably could have decluttered that whole drawer of shirts that were not as nice!
These are great ideas Becky ❤️ I've been decluttering for quite a few years now as it's an ongoing journey as life and you change as time goes on, but these tips are definitely helpful as after all this time I can still struggle with some things.
Great video Becky. Love the tips! I have been decluttering for several years now. Yes I can resonate with the 'just start' part of decluttering. I have watched a tonne of videos to gain inspiration and motivation. Trusting oneself is so true. Keep up the awesome videos. ❤
It looks absolutely stunning ❤ I love how you really embrace doing the work yourself! I love doing home projects. For the fridge space, you could take out those 2 cabinets and do a tall bookshelf painted the same color as the cabinets for a faux built in look.
@@minimalease you’re welcome…but if you’re wondering why that comment made absolutely no sense LOL, it was for someone else 😂, not sure why TH-cam put it here 🤷🏻♀️
I was a minimalist until I married and then had two kids with a maximalist. He loves to keep everything!! I am now getting back to my roots and trying to convince my whole family to do this. I had to stop my husband from building another garage. Hoping he will declutter the one we have. 😂
Bonjour Becky, j'adore l'idée de la fête d'emballage ❤, je vais m'en inspirer car je bloque un peu sur le désencombrement en ce moment pour ma garderobe capsule. Merci beaucoup pour toutes vos vidéos 🙏.
It is sometimes useful with clothing to ask yourself if the item is something that you would happily wear every day if you had nothing else. If the answer is no, let it go!
The kitchen for me was definitely a slower process to see what I really used but so worth the time and effort ❤️❤️ thanks so much for sharing!! And great job and all your hard work!
I have set aside tons of things to declutter. Most of the items are things I thrifted that I intended on using for a new business idea that I attempted and ended up not having the motivation or time for. The items have been taking up space and I’ve been adding to the pile but I feel like they are “worth” something and feel the need to save them up for a yard sale… how do I just let the items go and stop holding on to “make my money back”?
Another example is things that I feel are sentimental (baby clothes) that I know I don’t want to store but also feel like I can’t get rid of. My mom has given me tons of baby clothes for my kids that were mine I don’t want them but I feel like I will offend her if I declutter
These are such great questions! When I first started decluttering I tried selling everything and to me it was such a slow and painful process even if you do a big yardsale you are going to give up a day of your life for this stuff so make sure it’s worth it to you ❤️ to me I finally stopped trying to sell things unless they were maybe $50-60 or more that is what my time is worth. I still only give myself 2 weeks tops to get it out of my house. And with baby clothes especially ones that maybe sentimental to your mom (ask her if she wants them back 🤣) if she doesn’t want them and your kids aren’t super sentimental about them it’s free game to let them go in my opinion. I only have 2-3 things that my daughter wore but I let her play with them and for myself I don’t have anything that used to be mine but I do have some sweet pictures and to me that’s plenty ❤️❤️ hope this helps thanks for sharing!!
I can really relate to this. I have a cupboard full of things I spent a fortune on for a business I didn’t have the time for. It’s really frustrating for me.
Right there with you. I choose to call it lessons learned in business. Different phase in life I may be able to try again or not, but I learned from it. The extra space is heart medicine for the pain from my not successful choices.
Reducing flat surfaces is so important bc you not only have a clutter magnet, but you have to dust/clean them. I noticed that you have a sofa table (arguably the most useless piece of furniture in a house) and wall shelves.
I love our sofa table and our shelves ❤️ we use our sofa table everyday and our shelves I think are beautiful, all of them were made by my husband also 😍 but you’re right if u don’t love any flat surfaces get rid of them because they do collect clutter and dust 👍with these two things you mentioned in particular, yes, I could live without them and we would be just fine but do I want to “no” I really enjoy them both functional and aesthetically ❤️ thanks for sharing your thought though I love to hear what others think!

Love this!! I use that questioning too ❤️❤️
Working on it! Been decluttering for a year and 3 months now.
That’s awesome ❤️❤️

Hahah it’s helps me a lot too as a teacher I think in grades 🤣 thanks so much for sharing ❤️❤️
Former teacher also. Much of my belongings are receiving failing grades. And I don't even have to touch them to know that. Great analogy!
I’ve been on hiatus from my storage and organizing endeavors. I recently unloaded a whole bin at the goodwill donation center. Felt Wonderful!
Now I’m refilling the vw with more items to also go! 🎉

Wow! Yes grading is so different everywhere 😂 thanks for sharing ❤️❤️
I love the a team vs b team. I have that for my toddler... a team is black/white/grey for clothes, b team is colours.
I love nbr 1. Never thought of it that way before! Thank you.
I’m so glad!! Thanks so much for sharing 🥰❤️❤️

I changed my sweater this morning…have to let it go! I’d be miserable in it everyday… 😮
❤Still working on my declutterring! Kitchen and laundry room.
