    Thanks for this. It’s 6.30 Tuesday morning in south London and I’m supposed to be getting ready for work . I got my iPad out and was going to listen to a pod cast that I wanted to finish and the algorithms sent me your video.
    It’s priceless thanks . It deserves hundreds of likes .
    I can’t afford a trip out to the flats or a remote island, but my wife wants to go on holiday this year to the Seychelles. To go out to stay on an atoll is about £12000 .
    However I’m not going without some kit because I’m an opportunist, there will be somewhere to fish.
    I have two nine weights that I was going to take, now I have to explain to my wife why I need another rod and reel.
    What if you were fishing for bones on the flats wouldn’t a 12 weight be a bit over gunned ?

    What knot/knots do you suggest for attaching the fly line to the backing and the leader to the fly line? Also, do you suggest coating the knots to aid in passing through the guides? If so, with what product? Thanks, Eric

    Thanks for the info, very useful. I'm preparing for a trip to Aitutaki for bonefish and GTs in April. Filming and fishing. Hoping for redemption as I got schooled last trip with only one bonefish in 2019. Hopefully I'll do better this time. I'm a better caster now so hopefully that helps. Really hope I hook up with a GT this time.

    What 12wt rod brands do you recommend?

  • @NiclasGudmundsson

    I can recommend Danielsson control reels.. I had one in the Maldives this April and my friend got one too. They performed really good. We also got a Abel Super 12, that one can be a bit finicky due to the cork disc that when getting wet can loose all of its dragpower. The Danielsson reels cost 1/3 of a Abel and performs as well.

      @@kursmuchowymarekpuczynski7761 i used the 11infinity but my friend used the 8thirteen and that will work well too.
      The 11infinity is a really big reel.. I bit too big 🤣 I think I have almost 500m of 80lbs backing on it.

      - Gamakatsu SC15-2H 5/0
      - Owner Aki 6/0

    Would be better to know which reels dont stand up to the battle as there are so many out there and better to not waster money.

    • @pierrejoubert394
      @pierrejoubert394 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The list of reels that don't stand up to GTs on a continuous basis is probably much longer than those that do. I haven't tested all the reels out there too. In my opinion, stick to the reels mentioned in the video and you won't have any issues.

    • @flynomadic999

      Fly reels basically SUCK. Imperfect Tibor is likely the least sucky. If I could remove all of the ball bearings from any top end draw bar design and replace them with self lubricating brass bushings or Teflon? something fail proof I would. It’s relatively absurd that companies in this industry will market a mechanism with minimal moving parts and a modest break (for $800) that predictably fails after a few sessions of use. Sealed drags are a joke, none of them remain sealed over time and they are mostly unrepairable on the water. Wade and Shilton are decent Tibor copies with modern “improvements”. All other brands are mostly bling bling for dingalings. I’m guilty of getting suckered into trying more fancy fly reels than I care to admit.

  • @smau990
    @smau990 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh that is just stupid bootlicking. Reel breakage was an actual event that happened, you are free to name the brand and you should so viewers can avoid similar disaster. Or do I need to take everything on this channel as it was probably intended for the benefit of The Big Flygear?

    • @pierrejoubert394
      @pierrejoubert394 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right. The reel in question was Lamson, but the reason why I didn't mention it in the video is I can't recall what model it was.

      @@smau990 I think perhaps we'll do a video sometime on the maintenance of reels. Very often you'll find that reels fail not necessarily because of their design, but rather a maintenance issue. Maintenance issues can be an entire lack of maintenance, or what happens in many cases is that the reel fails directly after a maintenance procedure, so it was assembled incorrectly or so. I cannot say what happened with the specific reel mentioned, but what I can say is that it cost a very keen angler a very large fish.

    • @NiclasGudmundsson
      @NiclasGudmundsson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And we can say that every reel can fail, there are stories of Makos falling apart during fights with fish, so not even the most expensive reel is foolproof.
