    Great overview Tom. Reminds me of the times I went bonefishing. Casting is critical. So is strip strike. Thanks.

    At 5:20, some bone. I'll be on em' June 1st. As for Pat Sturzeszewski, notice Tom's rod? An Orvis Clearwater, very much affordable, check it out.

      Good stuff isn't cheap my dude. Also smaller shops can put things on sale that Orvis never will. Got a Helios 3d for 25% off at one.

      cabelas has a decent fly rod for beginners...you don't need to spend a lot until you grow into it.

    • @zacksanchez7654
      @zacksanchez7654 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I picked up a cabelas 3wt combo for about $100 3 years ago. Over summer I got an orvis 5wt for close to $400. The cabelas combo is way better in my opinion. Great action, super smooth reel, drag can tighten down to full lock, and I still have the original line that’s casts like a dream. Don’t chase after the big name brand, cabelas makes some super underrated fly gear for a decent price. The orvis setup is great, but feels nowhere near $400 worth of quality.

      Expensive - yes, but I haven’t had a problem with the quality. I still flats fish with my HLS rod and Battenkill reel, both 25 years old.

    Is 5/6 weight good for small reds or inshore fish in the 2-8lbs range

    • @newflyfisher
      @newflyfisher  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      agree with flo

    • @mattbugg4568
      @mattbugg4568 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 9 weight is the preferred rod for saltwater. Its big enough to handle a 120lb fish and small enough to feel small fish. The reel is really the important part has to be big enough to handle alot of backing and a fly line. The drag isn't so important when fly fishing because fly lines are only rated to 20lbs. If you put about 7lbs of drag on the line its set up right the rest is angling. Let the weight of the line in the water wear out the fish.
