    They set you up with some very nice gear but there are a few things you should probably still get:
    Some fly fishing gloves that have soft leather pads on your fingers where you strip your line trough, stronger fish that run hard and fast will burn tf out of your fingers 😂, and when you do some streamer fishing its also gonna keep the line from slowly grinding into your skin, thats especialy bad with salt on the line and its a spot that takes ages to heal since you move it all the time.
    Then get some streamers, im sure matt could point you in the right direction on what to get, you could probably also tie easy patterns like clousers yourself which saves you a bit of money if you already have some tying stuff and a vice.
    Then probably get some casting practice in but you will get good over time, also casting and shooting different lines (floating, sink tip or full sink) is quite different, fly casting is a lot more complicated compared to spinning gear but there is a lot of stuff about casting techniques and casting different line types on youtube, or just learn stuff from friends who know what they are doing 😂.
    Maybe learn some loop knots for your fly connections like the non slip loop knot, perfection loop..... just use what you like and maybe do some knot strenght testing with a scale, loop knots are very important for fly action since you dont have a swivel or splitring to act as a hinge for a free better action.
    There are some foam knobs that you slip over your fly reel knob, they are light so your reel is still balanced and doesnt wobble on fast runs and it avoids getting your knuckles busted by your reel handle when you let go of it when a fish runs, maybe see if you can find some of those.
    Also maybe put a cover over your reel when you are not fishing to protect the flyline from the sun, this will make them last a bit longer.
    Also dont really trust those welded loops in fly lines, they can fail, something like a nail knot is more secure but do some research on what to use on heavy gear like your 10wt.
    Other than that you are probably set, you will just learn stuff over time just like when you started using spinning gear 😄

    Love it Brooksy. A few years ago i decided to teach myself how to fly fish with 0 experience and no one to teach me. This is the stuff that makes fishing so amazing! No matter how much you know there’s always more. Great vid, keen for the next one.

    I learnt myself to fly fish in the High Canadian Arctic. - Man I caught some absolute monsters, up to 70lb's. Used Thomas & Thomas 9wt with Abel reel.....Massive Lake Trout, Arctic Char, Pike, Innconnu and many others, but Char and Lakers are the absolute best....... The BEST fishing is up around Taloyoak in Nunavut, and also North of Tuktoyaktuk, and also Ulukhaktok ( Holman ). Look those places up. Millions of lakes and no people, except a few hundred Inuit. I can't wait to get Permit/Bones and GT's on fly in FNQ and Barra.... You are one lucky bastard Brooksy!. Do yourself a mischief mate!

    I am no professional but well past average enthusiast levels in fishing, and I have fallen in love (again) with fly fishing many times in my years on the water. Many will say it’s “the only way” or something along those lines but I’ve found there’s so many ways to enjoy fishing and as long as you are doing it for the right reasons, there’s no harm in changing gears as you wish. One thing I can say for sure- fly fishing experiences will make a spin fisher a better spin fisher, and the other way round also. There’s overlap between all techniques and somebody who spends time mastering many styles will reap the benefits across the board. Excited to see what you learn and carry with you into other types of fishing, and looking forward to seeing you put that bug chucking rod to work!

I bought my first fly rod a few weeks back, spooled her all up then realised I had to change it to right hand and that I'd wound the line the wrong way around the reel. Classic fly kook. surely left handed is the go. Keen to hear if you get used to it or not.

    Great vid mate. Regarding switching the reel to right hand wind theres generally a retaining clip that holds the drag in. Its usually just a matter of unclipping it flipping the drag assembly
    around so the drag works correctly then you just flip the reel around and reverse the line onto another reel and wind it back on the correct way. Fly reels are pretty basic kit mechanically compared to any other reel short of an alvey. Have fun mate.

    A trick I learned to putting the right amount of backing on reels - fill your reels in reverse (ie fly line first), then fill your spool with the backing line to the correct fill amount. Then use an empty spool and battery drill to take it all off again, transfer it to another spool with the drill again, then finally back onto the reel.
    Sounds like a pain in the butt, but honestly with the drill it only takes a minute to take it off/transfer it, and then you get a perfect fill every time.

  • @marioyoutube7700

    @Brooksy FYI your old edgewater boat is just around the corner from me here in Sydney :-) . I'm interested in your take on the Fokeeto 73-3 can that rod handle 15gr lures like the specs ? The fish are not that huge in Sydney, so need smaller lures from time to time.

  • @matthewsvargas4437
    @matthewsvargas4437 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet put usually you need to take the spool off and there is a pin or lever that needs to be flipped to change the direction of the reel. Then you unwind fly line and backing and wind it back on going the other way since the spool will be facing the other side to change the reel from right handed to left, all knots and everything should be good just need to wind it on the other way

    Easiest way to know if you have enough backing is to grab the fly line out of the box while its still wrapped up and just put in the middle of the reel and if it doesn't reach the edge of the fly reel then you know you need more backing but that's for those people who like it spooled up a lot

    Awesome video! Got one question. Does it make sense releasing a fish after all the flopping and falling on the boat? Wouldn't it be better to keep it since it could be damaged and not survive

    • @JonnyBrooksFishing
      @JonnyBrooksFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question for sure mate. Firstly i obviously always try to not drop any fish on the deck. And some fish like mackerel even bringing them into the boat will kill them if your not super fast.
      But with tuskies and a lot of other fish if u spend the time holding them in the water and making sure they can swim off your giving them a pretty bloody good chance at survival.
      I’ve caught a lot of fish that have been attacked by shark and missing bits of their body. They are pretty resilient creatures. So long as they aren’t hooked in the gills/gut.

    Brooksy that was epic!!! I just got back into it myself, chasing stripers in the San Francisco Bay with the fly. I'm currently in Australia and I will be up on the Gold Coast for the next couple of weeks ending in Harvey Bay. I'm looking to take a trip or two, anyone you would recommend for a charter?

      Epic mate! If your going to Hervey Bay you need to go with the great man Choz from Hervey Bay fly and Sportsfishing. He’s the man and will show ya a good time.

      @@JonnyBrooksFishing Excellent. If you are ever in San Francisco I've got a spot on my Lund for you. Fresh water, salt water, California Delta....you call it!
