For those finding this video. Pay attention to how the upper ball joint is installed. It is directional. That dot should face in or out, and not front or back for proper movement of the ball joint.
the hardest part of this job is using the ball joint remover and figuring out what adapters work for your application. in my opinion showing how u removed and installed the joints with your tool would have helped more than the other parts. anyway thanks for showing how to get up to removing and installing the joints.
If you pull the CV axle completely, remove swaybar endlink, and undo the tie rod from steering knuckle you can do the upper control arm and then lower ball joint without ever removing the steering knuckle or brake system.
great informational video. thanks I will save some money for college doing this job myself rather than paying a shop to do it. look forward to learning more automobile tutorials
I agree the purpose of a video is to show you how to do it. If you don't show anything being done. We might as well just read a book. Otherwise, it was a great video.
don't need to take the caliper off the bracket.. just take the whole bracket off.. unless ur lubing the caliper slide pins.. don't gotta take it off to change the pads either..
I just loosened the torsion bar, removed the cv axle, the line clips, and then pulled the lower controller arm off, never removed any brake components at all. after i replaced the lower, i replaced the top one.
My lower ball joint boots are ripped and losing grease... I stopped by a local shop here and he quoted me 472.00 for the lowers only and that was just the labor. My ball joints are Moog and they're 38.00 each for the lowers.
2 thingsI did not understand. you took the bearing off, you didn't need to and, you didn't say anything about the way your supposed to put them in. the hole in the edge of the upper ball joint has to go towards the car, yours didn't. You must charge by the hour, that must be why you took apart more than you had too. other than that great video.
At 22:12 you show the top of the ball joint. There is a hole on the outer edge. Isn't that hole supposed to face inboard when installing the ball joint?
he didn't have to remove the hub assembly for one, good video for beginners don't get me wrong , but to much work, the knuckle and assembly could have come off in one piece, sometimes those assemblies can be a pain in the ass to get the top bolt off , he added 3 hours more work than needed
Yeah I second that, could've just swapped out the upper control arm first, hung the hub and knuckle with it strapped up where his brake caliper is as one unit (set the caliper on a bucket or something), and then changed the lower ball joints, put the knuckle back on, and then the tie rods. Done.
@@tazblzr88 I doubt ill hear back soon but can u explain this please? I dont have a 36 mm for the axle nut. So trying to avoid that. 2006 silverado 1500 .. Cant get to lower ball joint and not seeing how to do it your way. Thank u
@@GodWasAnAlien I doubt ill hear back soon but can u explain this please? I dont have a 36 mm for the axle nut. So trying to avoid that. 2006 silverado 1500 .. Cant get to lower ball joint and not seeing how to do it your way. Thank u
Why is it so hard for these help video guy's to ask someone to film why they do the work, so you can see exactly the process. No girlfriend or wife? No friend's?
Chances are good that he'll have to get a new bearing soon due to wheel speed sensor issues. I personally took the sensor off the connector under the fender, and left the whole bearing/knuckle assy intact.
I have a z71 4 wheel drive 2002 an the axles has play on the driver side I’ve changed thes axles an 3 days later started it again with play can any body help me out an could tell me wha it is
oh and after taking off half that stuff, and before you attack that cv joint, pop your upper ball joint to loosen it, crack ur cv joint loose, drop the upper ball joint carefully let the steering knuckle assembly fall forward and this will free up the cv to come out, bunjee that cv up out of your way and go from there as you did in the video........might be helpful to do full explaining of you popping ball joints in and out, with the proper tools and spacers, just sayin
You didn't show the most important and difficult part of the job, Pressing out the ball joints. Funny the video is even titled ball joint replacement but you dropped the ball on that
Luke S all because I only have 2 hands and didn't have a tripod at the time. Otherwise I would have. Couldn't operate the press and hold the camera at the same time unfortunately.
no need to take caliper off bracket, no need to take hub off steering knuckle, no need to drop outer tie rod, no need to take abs sensor apart let alone at the hub(follow cable up over upper control arm into and under the inner fender near the frame is a weather pack electrical socket, pull on clip seperate the two leads, remove clips along control arm and "wallah") so nice job explaining and editing vid, but don't try to make a living doing this, haha......
Why did you remove the hub only reason to remove hud is if you are replacing the hub next time just remove the axl way easier it will save you so much time but good video none the less lol
Yeah, at the time I didn't have a tripod or anything for my camera. So pressing out the bearing with one hand while holding the camera in the other was impossible.
Man u took way to much stuff off😂😂,take tire off nut off upper, pop it loose, pull it foward, take nut off lower and it all moves together, use a jack and then change both ball joints and back together,30 minutes each side and done
Pretty informative except you don't show any of the actual procedures you just tell me you're going to do them and come back in it's done.. why not show the actual work
Scott Seymour these were moog. If you have a stock truck, that's what I'd go with. If it's lifted, I'd recommend making the investment in the Carli ball joints.
Chevelle396BB thanks, It looks like they make a quality part. Definitely pricier than the house brands but nice extra features---grease serts, snap rings, cotter pin. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Useless video that you didn’t show the most important is how to use the clamp and tools to take the ball joint out and show how put it in.. what is this vid all about then🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
For those finding this video. Pay attention to how the upper ball joint is installed. It is directional. That dot should face in or out, and not front or back for proper movement of the ball joint.
Rookie of the year award goes to this guy

Get a balljoint master kit
If you pull the CV axle completely, remove swaybar endlink, and undo the tie rod from steering knuckle you can do the upper control arm and then lower ball joint without ever removing the steering knuckle or brake system.
Lol
Thanks for making a video with the tool sizes makes life easier
great informational video. thanks I will save some money for college doing this job myself rather than paying a shop to do it. look forward to learning more automobile tutorials
thanks for the vid, you certainly saved me some time. I got one side of my 04 gmc sierra done last night, tackling the other side today
Why didn't you show taking the ball joints out and putting the new ones in? Pretty much the point of the whole video.
MrTmel123 at the time I didn't have a tripod. I couldn't use the tool and hold the camera at the same time unfortunately.
Thanks forthe info but would have been better u showed how to install the back
I agree the purpose of a video is to show you how to do it. If you don't show anything being done. We might as well just read a book. Otherwise, it was a great video.
fucking amateur hour over here jesus christ
would like to know what adapters needed for press kit so i know which one to get. Also you do not have to take the hub off the knuckle.
That bottom grease fitting is pointed in towards the tire ,45 dag. Is nice in that area but turn out in order to get to it .Good job,!!!!
Glad to see someone else noticed that!! Kept scrolling to find your comment!!
It would have been nice to have seen the wear in the old joints. Great Video
don't need to take the caliper off the bracket.. just take the whole bracket off.. unless ur lubing the caliper slide pins.. don't gotta take it off to change the pads either..
Hub bolts impact extension and a swivel
I just loosened the torsion bar, removed the cv axle, the line clips, and then pulled the lower controller arm off, never removed any brake components at all. after i replaced the lower, i replaced the top one.
I also removed the little sway bar links.
I admire you for making this video......I picked up some great ideas.
My lower ball joint boots are ripped and losing grease... I stopped by a local shop here and he quoted me 472.00 for the lowers only and that was just the labor. My ball joints are Moog and they're 38.00 each for the lowers.
Thanks Buddy. A great video.
Thank you so much for this video! My first time, so I know you have just saved me a ton of aggravation and time!
No problem. First time is always the worse.
Thanks for the video really helps for being my first time doing this.
Sergio Gonzalez good to hear. It's a pain the first time, but after that, you'll have the hang of it!

I just pull the Caliper and caliper bracket off as one no need to remove the wheel bearing that's crazy pop the ball joints out press them back in
I have to do my ball joints on my 02 2500hd, just curious if you had to released the tension on torsion bars or not?
would have been nice to see how you pressed in upper to see how difficult it is
The upper ball joints are directional it has to be put in a certain way. The notches face up and down.
Reach up and just unplug the abs since ur pullin the whole wheel bearing
way to much work , the hub assembly and knuckle could have come off in one piece , ty all the same for posting this
I’m not sure why you would have to remove the wheel hub to remove the upper ball joint.
abs sensor unplugs at the top of the shock next time. way easier
At 22:12 you show the top of the ball joint. There is a hole on the outer edge. Isn't that hole supposed to face inboard when installing the ball joint?
You should have mentioned the dot on the upper ball joint has to face towards you.If you don't it will blow apart
What is the axle nut want break lose
Show how u got the ball joint out and in bro
so much time spent on filming the video and most importantly not shown..
It would be nice to see the process of actually removing the ball joints and then installing them. Must not be as easy as you made it look.???
Helpfull video.... THANKS!!!!!!
yall be making shit way harder than it really is. it's a piece of cake. it should only take 2hrs max. both sides...lol
bishop what would make it quicker then?

good job great vid.
Why didnt you show how to press lower ball joint
Why is it so hard for these help video guy's to ask someone to film why they do the work, so you can see exactly the process. No girlfriend or wife? No friend's?
You answered your own question.
You could have just unplugged your abs sensor under the top of the fender
Chances are good that he'll have to get a new bearing soon due to wheel speed sensor issues. I personally took the sensor off the connector under the fender, and left the whole bearing/knuckle assy intact.
What brand ball joints would anyone recommend???
Good video bud👌

Howd ya slide the boot on the ball joint? Did ya use a special tool to clip it on or something?
oh and after taking off half that stuff, and before you attack that cv joint, pop your upper ball joint to loosen it, crack ur cv joint loose, drop the upper ball joint carefully let the steering knuckle assembly fall forward and this will free up the cv to come out, bunjee that cv up out of your way and go from there as you did in the video........might be helpful to do full explaining of you popping ball joints in and out, with the proper tools and spacers, just sayin
Just take bracket off upper controller arm nothing else 45 min max, 04 2500HD GMC 4X4

It’s not exactly rocket science...
Camera needs to be a little further back to get a wider field of vision ! Great video .
joe doakes yeah, I have a tripod now that would have been helpful for this video for sure!
I'm trying to figure out if I have aluminum control arms or steel ones. 05 GMC Yukon XL, RWD...torsion bar suspension. Any tips much appreciated
Murry's Fallout Silent Cinema steel.
my 05 doesnt have press in lower ball joints unfortunately. they are riveted in and need to be chiseled/grinded/drilled out :(
must be not be a 4x4
You didn't show how to remove the lower ball joint
Howd you take the boots off before installing the new one?
william nau new balljoints have new boots
Chevelle396BB yeah mines came with boots on. tried to press 1 thru and tore it. did yours come with the boots off?
Inner tie rod looks shot
i think he skipped the fun part ................we wanted to see you take them off .....
no need to take caliper off bracket, no need to take hub off steering knuckle, no need to drop outer tie rod, no need to take abs sensor apart let alone at the hub(follow cable up over upper control arm into and under the inner fender near the frame is a weather pack electrical socket, pull on clip seperate the two leads, remove clips along control arm and "wallah")

Why did you remove the hub only reason to remove hud is if you are replacing the hub next time just remove the axl way easier it will save you so much time but good video none the less lol
how much does it cost for this?
I got quoted $800, roughly about 200 for ball joints (4) I'll save me a few hundred and do myself
would help if you showed you actually replacing it instead of showing the unnecessary removal of other things
No need to remove the hub
Do you need to do anything to the torsion bar?
replacing ball joints but not shown how to remove it?
Yeah, at the time I didn't have a tripod or anything for my camera. So pressing out the bearing with one hand while holding the camera in the other was impossible.
ummm... don't heat up metal to separate ball joints from control arm. Heat makes metal expand. cold makes metal contract. it's physics. just sayin'.
You did way too much just for ball joints and then you never showed the replacement process.
Man u took way to much stuff off😂😂,take tire off nut off upper, pop it loose, pull it foward, take nut off lower and it all moves together, use a jack and then change both ball joints and back together,30 minutes each side and done

Knuckle???? You mean spindle??? lol
Where removing the ball joint duh
so many things done wrong
It isnt necesary to remove the hub..wasted time.think it out. Js.
