    I can add my two cents here. Thomas seemed a bit down and did not seem to like it but don't be discouraged. I drove it almost in pretty much the same specification as here, as well as most of it's rivals. TLDR this is one of the best EVs currently. If you're interested, a bit more details:
    - Efficiency. We saw this powertrain in Ariya much more already and it is very efficient. It's even more efficient in the Megane. It will deliver ~370km range mixed driving. It can do ~13kwh city and 20kwh highway (120-130kph). Even with it's pointlessly big Cd, it's quite a bit more efficient than ID.3 and is close to the Model 3.
    - Regeneration, as mentioned by Thomas, has modes. Without it, car freewheels amazingly well, feels like it has almost no friction. It does adapt slightly to depending on the speed but mostly the driver controls it with the paddles. I would agree that proper adaptive solution would be best (Tesla is by far the best here) but some cars are harder to predict or have a very weak regeneration setting. In this case, Megane at least let's you choose. The highest setting is pretty strong and stops the car well (but not to a complete halt, unfortunately).
    - Drives rather well too. FWD EVs aren't the brilliant usually in general because of the massive torque coming suddenly makes them lose traction (Kia and Hyundai EVs were particularly horrible at that) but Megane is the best one so far. It's calibrated properly and is rather progressive, has enough traction for the amount of power. Not as good as RWD (as ID.3) would be but really good enough that it doesn't bother.
    Interesting that Thomas had an issue with the steering, because I feel it's calibration is one of the best as well (not as good as VW and Tesla, but better than everything else).
    Suspension is pretty firm but isn't uncomfortable and damn side better than Teslas. Not as good as VW though.
    Side note: this is my personal biggest downside of the Megane. The whole driving refinement, calibration of fine details feels is good but not brilliant. For example, you can hear small clunks or squeaks from the suspension or the brakes. Not always, but sometimes, especially driving very slowly and trying to get to a very gentle stop. VW feels much more complete in that regard.
    - Interior is amazing. Blows away everything in this price range, at least in this spec. Miles better than ID.3, Born, Teslas and much closer to XC40, Ioniq 5 and generally premium vehicles. Surprisingly, even built quality, stitching, door handles (inside and out), door closing and stuff like that are very good and much better than we are used to seeing from Renault; would probably rival some premium vehicles in this regard. Some harder plastics here and there, but mostly everything is covered in many nice materials, is soft, switches feel substantial, don't feel cheap and have nice clicks. Separate control for climate is super useful and there are FOUR window switches, for every window (groundbreaking I know). Steering wheel buttons aren't really capacitive, they feel like proper buttons and are just put on one plastic plane. Driving position felt okay, seats are comfortable.
    - Infotainment with Android is good as well. Not as good as Tesla, but better than anything else. Quick, easy to use. Google Maps are integrated and you can see the map on the driver's screen.
    - Practicality is a probably the weak point. Trunk is short, though rather deep, not much space in the back seats. Front row is spacious though and there is enough storage space. But no frunk :(
    - Styling is, of course, a matter of taste. I think it looks okay, definitely much better in person, though I don't think it will age very well.

      Is the e208 worth considering compared to this? Tks!

    • @hayashishark7378
      @hayashishark7378 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@flintdxb7514 I suppose you are considering smaller battery Megane EV40 instead of EV60 if you compare it to the e208.
      Megane is a much better and more sorted car in every way: nicer to drive, more economical, more space. It helps that it's much newer car and on a proper EV base. Megane in general is a notch above e208 and, of course, more expensive. It compares better and holds it's own even in the company of Model 3 and ID.3.
      e208 in my mind makes sense only if it's much much cheaper. It's not that economical, not much grip and balance in the suspension, it's rather noisy (lots of road noise and powertrain noise, even compared to ICE cars), not much space and Peugeots generally don't wear very well (interior doesn't hold up well after a while). All in all, much less usable car. The base of the car is a bit older and is compromised because it shares itself with ICE cars. I would have considered e208 only if it was 7-10 thousand cheaper than the Megane. Otherwise, I don't think it's worth it.
      e208 has some sisters as well (e2008, Corsa E, Mokka E, eC4) and I would prefer Corsa E simply because it's exactly the same car with a different styling (I dont think any of them look very good anyway), but much cheaper though. OR I would be tempted with eC4 because of more space and similar price to the e208.
      So all in all, objectively Megane is miles better which would be my pick. However, if you are okay with less space, don't need as much refinement, like the look of the e208, and can find it much cheaper than the Megane, it is worth considering as well.
      I am looking for an EV as well and I've tried to consider most of them, so if you have any other questions, I would be happy to help:)

It is mind-blowing watching car manufacturers throwing decades of understand of the man-machine-interface down the drain with these pseudo-mirrors and the touch or rather non-tactile controls. Lack of spatial awareness kills people just as high reaction times from watching a smartphone screen instead of keeping an updated view of the surroundings does.

    • @philmorbey1827
      @philmorbey1827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think manufacturers struggle to contain batteries, suv shape allows batteries under the floor but give less compromise on the rear seating position? Also I think it allows them to charge highly for ev's during the early days of adoption? I really agree with you though this shape lacks aero efficiency and really is not my thing. Unfortunately companies seem to be doing away with hatch backs, look at Ford killing off the focus!

    • @kristisrb
      @kristisrb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hatchbacks are very much dying, their market is shrinking every year. Even VW is losing with the Golf.
      But with EVs there is another problem - battery. Best position for such a large structure is the floor but that eats interior space. Even something like Model 3, though looking like a normal saloon, is quite a bit taller than most and still has issues with seating position, especially in the rear.
      Megane might look bigger but it's rather small in person and not that tall. It has plastic arches but besides that, there is nothing crossovery about it. It's literally a normal hatchback in size simply made taller to fit the battery (~11cm battery pack I'm told)

    • @Hvitserk67
      @Hvitserk67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kristisrb The point that the height of the battery pack is more easily hidden by the height of a crossover design seems sensible. I know the floor at the back of the Tesla Model 3 and it is not comfortable for an adult of 184 cm to sit there. I still think that you can build a car such as the Tesla Model Y only without the crossover design. Something along the lines of the short Citroën C4 Picasso II.

The infotainment system works well and the whole car seems well thought out. I haven't tried the MG4, and that might offer better value, but I doubt it will offer the build quality. That's with all the extras. Here in France the basic version with the big battery is about 42000, minus 6000 bonus you get when buyingan ev. So 36000. With the smaller battery it's about 31000. Still not cheap, an ID3 with the 58 kW battery was 31000 a year ago.

  • @Jacob-uk4kl
    @Jacob-uk4kl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thank you for this review. I think this car is really important, because it's really light compared to similar EVs, so it's a more sustainable choice. I think it's a bad direction that many mid sized electric SUVs are really big and weigh a lot - like the Enyaq. They should focus on being small and weigh really little so they're more sustainable. If you build electric cars with a little battery pack and only one motor, then you will save some of the battery pack and the motor for another car.
    I think it's wrong that for instance in USA you get the same incentives when buying an electric car regardless of how sustainable the car is. For instance the two Rivian models weigh about 3.500 kg, and the Hummer EV weighs 4.103 kg which I think is insane.

    Great in-depth review, Thomas - super work...!
    I do like the look of this model - especially the interior design and Google screen.
    But... and, it's just personal preference, I know - having had a front-wheel-drive EV (Leaf) and now a rear-wheel-drive EV (i3) I just much prefer the torque of an electric motor powering the rear wheels...
    I found the Leaf would spin-up it's front wheels on anything other than bone-dry tarmac...
    The i3 gives me that push out of junctions which is more instantaneous and safer when joining a fast-moving A-road, for example...

    • @benjaminpohl3104

      Traction with the Megane E-Tech is rarely an issue if at all. Since the weight of the motor and accessory components rests on the front wheels wheel spin will only happen on damp or wet roads, which is something that would happen on a rear wheel drive as well. There was a comment lately that Renault Sport was involved in developing the drivetrain and after driving it I would second that notion, it shows and one can easily drive it like a hot hatch.

      The 3 stalks are clearly not a problem. Basically you use the top one for Drive/Rear/Neutral Park, and the lower one for music.
      The middle one for the screens sweepers...well since there is a rain detector (which is working, not like the Tesla one), you barelly use it.

The design is interesting pleasing but why make it so short!...The high loading lip and lack of space in the rear means we won’t be changing the Kia e-Niro for one of these...the quality looks high but the price for this size of car is risible. European OEMs are going to have a shock when Chinese brands start delivering their wares.

    Don't understand why they choose to use hard plastic at front doors... They started with rear doors and it was ok but why they keep going? You made a posh looking EV with an existing name, and you created a good looking interior design so if you want to increase your market share then you should be generous in terms of material quality... Strange thing is in some trim levels with the clio V they pushed the B segment limits but with the megane they are not... Strange...
