- OK, I'm finally doing it. I'm reviewing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. Was this game as rushed and terrible as everyone thought? No, absolutely not. It was actually much worse.
Something to keep in mind is that I'm playing the fully patched, finished version. The game was glitchy beyond being playable for a while after it came out. But this is as good as it will ever get.

Mike Kopatch it’s pretty bad, THPS5 is considered to be the worst Tony Hawk game to ever be released. It also has the lowest rating and reviews out of any tony hawk game.
Mike Kopatch Trust me I’ve bought this game and experienced it. I even forced myself to beat the game man, such a waste of time. I wish I could go back in time and never had bought or played the game. I understand that you don’t want to feel like you wasted you’re money, but this game was a huge let down. It felt clunky, the controls were awful, the graphics were awful, the animations were awful, the missions were awful, it has less trick options and less trick variations, it had no off board controls, it had no unique special moves, the entire game was pretty much awful and felt rushed.
"We're never going to get a re-release of the old games" I'm so glad this was an incorrect prediction.
At the time Tony's contract with Activision had expired and he said he was done with them. He obviously changed his mind

Vicarious Visions nailed the Tony Hawk aspect, thanks to their knowledge and works on the handheld games
I hope Toys For Bob are making the Pro Skater 3 remake like they made Crash 4 since Vicarious Visions won't be able to now. A band with a song in Pro Skater 3 seems to have accidentally leaked the existence of the remake a few months ago.

@@BigSmoke-xh5hi At this point, if what we’re getting next isn’t Pro Skater 6 or Underground 3 or anything like that, I actually wouldn’t mind a remaster of Underground 1 and 2. As good as 1 and 2 remake is, I’m sick to death of Pro Skater 1 and 2 constantly getting remakes and ports of their levels. Even 3 has gotten quite a bit of love. Any of the original levels from the PS2 era from Pro Skater 4 to the PS3 era with Proving Grounds are only playable on those games. Would love to see New Jersey, Manhattan or do the Mctwist over the Helicopter in HD or see the complete Skate Ranch in HD from American Wasteland.

Look at this versus THPS 1+2 with its nice graphics AND 60fps that stays stable even on the base PS4.

Glad I wasn't in a tony hawk phase when this game released. Activision must've been out of their minds to release it in the state that it was. THUGPRO, the way to go.
I literally preordered it at GameStop for $60.... it’s not impressive. Sad. But on a better note, I lost 105lbs and landed some kickflips and pop shuvits. And got a new skateboard deck.

It should be illegal to sell obviously unfinished games and not offering any sort of refund. I am glad I cancelled my preorder back then because I was really woried when I've noticed it's made by Robomodo aka LJN of the late 2000's. I've never touched the game. It always seemed interesting to me how studio with so many untalented people like Robomodo could make so many games. It could be interesting to interview some ex-employees to see why every game they have made was so shitty and let them play their games.
THPS HD was already such a massive pain in the dick, I can't even imagine what it's like to play this one. It looks shocking.
If you ever liked a PRO SKATER then you'd probably like the game. But if you think it's gonna be like American waist land then you'll be disappointed.

@Nicotine That's a decent one for real actual spots but he can also play Skate 2 and 3 since they seem to play similar as XL. Then there's Sessions but I haven't heard any updates about it.

I beat thps5 and all the skate party games but I still gave up on the third group of levels in skate jam.
That game was the worst. There's no redeeming quality to it whatsoever. It's SOOO bad. I can't believe Tony Hawk let his name be put on that crap.

Honestly what we really need is Tony Hawk's Underground 3 to end off the series with a solid trilogy and to end this long dry period of no good skating games. But Neversoft is gone and I wouldn't really trust anyone else with it sadly.

You're ideas on how they could have made the game better seem really good. I think an M Rated Lil Wayne skate game would have sold so many copies. 13 year old rebels would have ate it up.

The "THPS5 was rushed" thread doesnt hold any weight because THPS HD wasnt rushed, and it was just as bad, or worse. It wasnt timing, it was ROBOMODO being unqualified to make a game of this magnitude.

I actually had fun making parks in this game and sharing them online. :P
The custom park layouts are not just empty lots, but instead have similar structures to some levels in career mode, so they have some built-in skateable objects. It was like making the career mode levels your own, and I thought it was an interesting change of pace for create-a-park, albeit limited compared to making parks in most of the other games (though I must mention you can create missions like in THUG 1 & 2).

I beat all of the PS2 tony hawks, they are so amazing, so i looked at my old Tony hawk PS5 case that I never played and thought “it couldnt be THAT bad”..... boy was i wrong
Your review was pretty much my exact feelings as a fan of skateboarding games. I can usually find something about them I like with the exception of this and Simpsons Skateboarding. I really wanted to like Tony Hawk 5, but the weird disconnect of everything from controls to any type of a story left it feeling bare and broken. 2X is one of my favorite Xbox games and the extra levels were a cool addition. As a PS4 owner, I really wish there were more skateboarding games or stuff like 2X on it.
Probably the best representation I’ve seen of this game and why it’s so bad. Everyone else just focuses on the glitches, but you really went in depth into a game you could’ve dropped after just a few minutes.

I got it for like $5 on sale on xbox live, it's not great, but I don't think it's quite as bad as people say, my only (major) complaints, were how slow the spin is, and how long it takes to get up from falling and how it like resets, could have been worse, but definitely could have been a whole lot better

Just started playing the 1+2 remasters and loved them so I was like no way 5 could be that bad. Boy was I wrong.
Came back after playing and watching THPS 1+2 and remembering how terrible this was.
Two things:
1. Post-patch, you can toggle whether you want slam to be a single or double tap of the grind button in the options menu (though it honestly should’ve been there from the beginning).
2. I believe the primary reason for all the loading is the levels are modeled as finite state machines; this means that in order to change anything in a map, the game has to dump everything out of RAM, reload the base state of the map, then apply a state transition in order to create a specific state. This is the most quick and dirty way of making a functional loader, and most likely a result of the game’s rushed development.

The crazy thing here is, for how bad Tomy Hawk 5 is, it is actually the complete blueprint for creating probably the greatest Tony Hawk game.
The exploding head thing is a brilliant idea, just terribly implemented here. The getting bigger or getting smaller power up is also brilliant idea for getting to secret areas and if you fail at making it to the secret areas, you get really funny fails. For example, using the mini power up to get through a pipe but if you don't make it out the pipe, you regrow and crush yourself. Just take the stomp mechanic out. Make the areas open world and different mpcs in the area hold different objectives and different areas of the city unlock after doing enough objectives.
The manual speed up panels was also a very good idea.

I’ve gotta say that I love and respect tony hawk. I know that he had no say in this game as far as it’s functionality. He was hoping that pro skater would take off again. This just makes me sad. Robo moto blows. We all miss Neversoft and all of the potentially gnarly lines put together by the player. Thps4 made combo. Thps made S.K.A.T.E. We want and/or need a good thps game. Not this.
I believe the front foot impossible was actually in THUG as a double tap trick funnily enough.
There was a multiplayer mode in underground where you had to shoot the other player with a fireball using a flip trick.

I really wish to see a re-release of the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater trilogy games. With removed glitches, improved draw distance in 2 like on the Dreamcast, and the Xbox elements on 3.

I remember when this came out and I was so excited and then just read everywhere to avoid it so I did and now 1+2 is out and it's literally one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played

THPS 2X was amazing. I only ever found one complaint about it and that was the new physics weren't the best with the THPS1 levels. But it still worked. And the bonus levels looked amazing.

The only real way to make a successful Hawk-style game, even with the Lil Wayne idea, is for one to be developed by someone with more passion for its predecessors than Robomodo.
How awesome would I’d be if they made another (better) underground. The first underground was my absolute favourite- it had an awesome story and played very good
