Jeepers they don't write songs this good these days. I love all the versions I have heard of this truly stunning song, my favorite being Luke Kelly's rendition
Thanks for uploading. Takes me back to the early 1960 at the Jug of Punch in Digbeth in Birmingham. One of Ian`s finest compositions enhanced by the voice of Lorna, with such superb clarity and fine tone. The sensitive accompaniment and balance of the recording make this one of my all time favorites.
I used to follow Ian and his group around when I lived in Moseley Birmingham, a very underrated group that influenced many performers, I learnt my first two songs from their first album, The Unquiet Grave and The Drovers Dream. A much deserved award for Ian at the recent Folk Awards. Luke Kelly I feel did the definitive version of this, Ian's best song
Just found it and so impressed with the voice such a change from so many others who have done this song. The instrument sound so clean. Thanks for the post
@@Stewart2240 Although Simon & Garfunkel's version is the first I heard, Kate Wolf's is the first version that really impressed me just now and then I sought out this great original, very timely for these days.
I remember performing this song at a folk festival in college. One of the very few folk songs I have ever performed in my long singing career. One of the most beautiful and devastating songs I have ever heard and unfortunately completely apropos for 2018.
Thank you so much. When that song appeared it hadn't got the attention it still deserves now that a nuclear war is looming around UKraine war... Warnings are made to warn. People don't take it seriously enough.
Such a pretty song, I can't believe I've never heard it before. The last couple verses were pretty dark, though. Kind of startling at first but I quickly grew to like it (I love dark and morbid stuff).

I also used to go to the Jug ‘O Punch, Thursday nights. The banjo player, John, Dunkerley, was my brother, I really do miss him. 🙏🏻

Another fine version is by the late Kate Wolf.
