In 2013 when I was getting ready to go into the hospital for cancer surgery, I made my kids watch this episode. All they could say was "I didn't know Nana had a tv show". This episode was a reenactment of every time my mother visited someone in the hospital. Makes me roar with laughter.

Mr Smothers looked so cute in that hospital bed . Those shifty eyes and his looks of dismay at his crazy familys remarks were perfect . This skit reminds of my brother law and sister in the hospital room when my Dad passed away. He had not passed away 20 minutes when suggestions about what belonged to who were brought up. Fortunately my younger brother had arranged for the fair distribution of assets through his lawyers before my Dad had passed, I have since these past 10 years never contacted her nor she me. True colours come out when money is involved.
Worked in life insurance. Never saw how quick people smelled blood when death was near, and the lengths they will go when money is involved. When my grandmother passed, I mourned, paid my respects, and went right back home (lived out of state) as quick as possible for this very reason. She wasn’t gone a week when the rumblings of who got what money, jewelry, furniture, etc. started happening - clear indicators I needed to get the hell out of dodge.
That's terrible. People are supposed to be on their best behavior when someone is dying, not acting ugly. Unfortunately, you see it time and again. I'm very sorry that happened to you.
This is the version of Mama that I love the best. Other than the name and the costume, this Mama and the Mama character that Vickie Lawrence played in Mama's Family, particularly in the syndicated version, were nothing alike. They were completely different.
I tried to make myself watch "Mama's Family," but once you know the character from the CB Show, you are right...nothing alike, and she was way to nice on MF. The other characters were also plain dumb and unbelievable. I remember reading that Harvey Korma was director of the show and felt Mama was too mean so he toned her down. Bad decision.
They represent a time and place in entertainment history where talent and writing will never be duplicated .
The peak of our artistic culture. Sadly. But glad I was alive to appreciate it at the time and we can continue to enjoy it for all time.
