@RangerMan-yv7rl It is very dark, under the surface. Carol once said that during rehearsals with Dame Maggie Smith, they read it straight just for the sake of doing it. She said it was basically horrifying. You're right though. It's very dark.

This was my late mother's all time favorite show. She had a rough time in her life. She was widowed at a young age and she couldn't afford to go out for entertainment so she stayed in and of all the shows on TV this is the one she watched religiously. It was her escape from the world for an hour a week. Of course since she was watching it her five children were also watching it. I was the oldest and fairly young so much of the humor was lost on me until later. Now looking back it's one of my favorites as well and every time I watch this show either in re-runs or on the internet like here I am reminded of those evenings so many years ago sitting around our little black and white TV watching this show together. Thank you Carol Burnett!
I too was brought up by a widowed mother in this era and likewise saw this show bring her temporary escape and joy. We had true treasures back then and as life goes on and the world grows less familar, l remain grateful for these memories.

At 15:25, Eunice mentions she got an honorable mention for a - clay ashtray? In the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV program there's an episode of a boys summer camp; almost all the boys were making clay ashtrays, only one of them had any artistic value. Did the teacher feel sorry for Eunice, and this episode is saying Eunice has no art experience at all, that's why Thelma said "So What"?

When I said only one of the boys had any artistic value, I meant one of the boys in that episode actually made a human statue. But Eunice has no talent, like all the rest ( maybe her ashtray was neater than the others)?

Always loved Carol Burnett and then when I was 27 I saw Madeline Kahn and loved her too. Never knew they'd done anything together so this is a treat - two of America's great comedic talents working in perfect balance, neither one upstaging the other, both delivering first-rate comedy and acting, each enhancing the other's performance. Dang I feel lucky!

This show was fantastic, I loved the Mrs. Wiggins skit too. I always felt sorry for Eunice, she had an awful, narcissistic and manipulative mother, a horrid woman. Sometimes I could hardly believe what momma said to her, so critical & cruel. I know it’s comedy but can you imagine any mother behaving this way toward a daughter? Anyway, this group was awesome, truly funny. There’s nothing like it these days.
I thought the worst thing that Mama ever did was when she killed little Eunice's pet bunny Fluffy and served it for supper. Eunice didn't 6 out about it until years later when Ellen told her. I never found that funny at all, I thought it was cruel and hateful.
@@Nigelsmom2136 Yes, that was just awful, it upset me too. Eunice had such a tragic life, I had to remind myself that it was fake so I didn’t worry about it but a lot of it was still pretty awful.
This was how Eunice’s grandma treated mama.
I guess that is why I never liked this show..."Mama" was vicious like my mother...
I just saw this and remembered..BUT I am NOW working on my CPTSD...after I walked away from my so called "family" over 30 years ago...

I remember an old episode of SNL when she was The Bride of Frankenstein and when she woke up from her altered state she sang "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story. It was absolutely hilarious and her voice just ROCKED! So sad that she's no longer with us.

Moving into the future, Cheers did really well. The whole cast had great character. I even bought the box set. I was glad that having a drinking bar setting was accepted on TV, since TV is so judged in the country.
Don’t have the talent & don’t have the writers. We were blessed.

I remember my Grandma laughed at that one. I was younger so I asked what was funny, because I was still laughing at the earlier material, she explained why it was said, which made it funnier. Realised our family was in good shape.

I recall in the Carol Burnett Show, Harvey was all slicked up looking very hansem playing a Sea Captain. Carol played a dame all over Harvey's character. He picked her up n dropped her into the sea! Lolol 😂

Audiences didn't like it then - Ingrid was expecting a baby BEFORE she was married to that Roberto guy. But, for the most part, she was forgiven later in the 1950s, by the time she won an Oscar for "Anastasia".

I love this one so much. In 1981 I tried out my directing chops in college by bringing this particular sketch to the stage. Except on the TV I had "Family Feud" instead of "Bowlin' for Dollars" because that's actually what was on! It was open for one lunch time matinee performance, fond memories.
Voted one of the 100 best shows. I would say it was one if the top 10 best shows, if not top 5.

I love this episode of "The Family". I've watched it so many times that I can detect the slight differences between this performance and the other performance of this same skit. I know they used to do two performances of the same skit on the same evening for difference audiences. Sometimes you can find both versions on TH-cam, and it's interesting to note the slight differences in dialogue, movements, facial expressions, and audience laughter between the two.

OMGosh, I’d totally forgotten about Eunice on the Gong Show. I remember seeing it originally, not sure what year it was, mid 70s perhaps, it was later in the series because The Family” sketch had been on for awhile, and we knew all the characters really well.
Eunice on The Gong Show was when worlds collide. I really remember so well wondering how the sketch was going to end. Another humiliation of Eunice? Eunice again being the butt of the joke? Or maybe Eunice having, until now, an undiscovered Barbra Streisand vocal quality that finally found its way out? When Eunice started singing horribly a horrible song, completely convinced she DID have a Babs thing going on, gets instantly gonged, and the camera simply closed in on her face, which was a study in total devastation, and didn’t change while the camera either irised out completely, or the spotlight dimmed out, I just remember being so sad for her, and thinking how brave Carol and her crew were to end the scene like that, no gag, no joke, just a very human moment.
