Carol is reliving the alcoholic bickering of her youth in the family sketches. She grew up hearing the arguments and the way to escape was to watch movies and dream of being in them . As an adult she used humor to deal with it. She put herself in to these sketches, and then the last segment of her show she re- enacts a movie . She put herself in to her variety hour. It was known that she insisted on a calm happy set with no unpleasantness. She turned her unhappy childhood in to a productive show making people laugh . Carol is a saint ! She saved her child from drugs only to lose her to lung cancer. She’s had a wonderful life even though she faced obstacles that could’ve soured her view of life. She chose to make the best of the hand she was dealt with with love and laughter! I admire Carol Burnett very very much . An example for all of us! Thank you Carol.
len welch thought the same thing, many of these family sketches are very comedic but the raw feelings expressed in the dialogue is very real, almost every family has had these types of arguments, i'm not sure how carol learned to see the humor in those traumatic events but these skits are a brilliant contrast between humor and deep sadness.
I've never found Mama's Family all that funny (I don't like arguing), the exception being the Mickey (Conway) improv about the 2 Siamese elephants - which is hysterical. However, I LOVE almost every other sketch she, Harvey, Conway, Lawrence and various guests did on her shows, and I grew up with them. I can admire Lucille Ball's work in the early days of television a decade before Carol, but I've always though Carol Burnett was far funnier than Lucy ever was. I frequently watch several hours of Carol Burnette skits while I am working on other things, and I rarely skip any of them. Thank you for mentioning her history as she certainty has overcome many obstacles and made huge contributions to comedy.
My family wasnt on drugs or the drink but we were southern with a mama (I called her nannie), her 5 adult kids and I was the grandson. And it was all big lunches and dinners and love and laughs and then sure enough EVERYTIME, nannie would end up picking a bit too hard and now they are all fussing and yelling and I'm laughing in the corner and then not 20 minutes later it's all "well I just love ya baby", "I love you too mama"...theyd leave and nannie would turn and say "they make my leg hurt. Oh where did I go wrong".. And I'd lose it. It was LITERALLY The Family/Mama's family.
How sad to have had to put up with losers during her childhood, but so good that she was able to channel it all into edgy humour. A great lady, and a great comedienne!
Shannon Liska I agree with you about Lucy . Humor was carols escape . Elaine Stritch ‘s famous line is that in an instant in your day , with all of life’s stresses , humor can completely in an instant start your day over . Some reach for a drink or a drug but these don’t work because it chases your soul if you use it for a crutch every day . Humor is free if charge , only good consequences .I think Carol deep inside when she was young somehow made a decision “ Nope ! I’m not going down the way the rest around me are , I’m going to be happy dammit “. More and more I find happiness to be a decision rather than a pipe dream. Acting silly is the best belly laugh at no ones expense . Only the truly funny can do it . Lucy and Jim Carey did this . Eunice reacts like a 4 year old and when she’s petty or hurt from resentment we as adults identify this feeling but we’ve learned to circumvent these feelings . We watch Eunice and can relate to the times we’ve felt these emotions but to watch an adult behave this way magnified makes it hilarious because of the ridiculousness of our ego’s . That child is still in all of us and laughing at it relieves the pain of it .
There never will be shows like this again. I'm thankful to have grown up in these times when tv was good and actors didn't have to cuss every other word. We had the best music...people could actually sing. It's great to still watch them and pretend for a moment...it's the good days.

With Eunice the way she is in this skit it makes perfect sense that Ed left her in later seasons. Totally believable even if she does treat everyone badly.
Eunice was always good to Mama. Mama was the bitch queen from hell who complained about everything Eunice said or did. She danced on air though whenever she saw Ellen who visited her once every 5 years or so, and stayed 5 minutes. No wonder her sons never visit.
@@scootergurl48 I agree, Eunice was treated badly by her selfish mother. Eunice was always trying to please her family but never succeeded. Her mother and Ellen were mean to her.
I know this is an older post I am responding to, but the whole cast had great chemistry and were all so talented. Comedians today cannot hold a candle to these four. Lol love Carols expressions..❤❤❤Vicky Lawrence a gem as Mama and Tim always a ham
Once you watch one episode, you’re watching EUNICE and MAMA all day!!!
Classic comedy at its finest. I miss Harvey, now I'll miss Tim as well!
"Liiike your blue HARE!!" lolllllz! Conway made mama smile! #hereIn2019 #applauding
"Why the hell you keep calling me Mother Harper, ain't you got a mother of your own?"
According to the Mickey's Apartment sketch, all he had growing up was an abusive aunt, and he ran away from home at 14. ...Of course, Mother Harper still couldn't care less...
Love this show. I just discovered it over the Christmas holiday when we spent it in a cabin with no tv. I am addicted to it now.
I love these family skits. I can watch them over and over.
God Eunice is the most hilarious character ever!!!! My laughter has returned.
Yes she is 😂
I love mother Harper and Eunice
A tragic figure giving us gallows humor.
I luv Eunice I'm happy when I get to see her put her back on m e channel

Eunice actually came in playful, and wanting to spend time with Ed.
"actually"
I noticed that too..
Cute to see mama laughing 😂
J* good show
Her. Face. As she leans On the countertop, 😆
Loved this show. My all time favorite sketch was Gone with the wind. 😃
"I saw them in the window & just had to have it!" 🤣😆
Her curtain dress with the rod attached was hilarious!
"Went With The Wind" XD
@2:53 "same size as my old one" LOL Hope to see Mama in September
Could you imagine living with those two?
ef no
I do!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Every skit cracks me up!BUT THE ELEPHANT SKIT MAKES ME ALMOT CRY EVEN TO THIS DAY AND THE DENTIST SKIT RUNS REALLY CLOSE TO IT.
I am so glad I found this channel.... wonderful childhood memories of laughter !
The way Carol can manipulate her face......oh gosh........
Jonathan Pinckney and her voice! she's amazing omg
***** Aye!
@@ostrovisky and her body! She has it all.
Very funny . When someone makes some kind of face sometimes is as funny or funnier then what's going on . Al Bundy from married with children was so good at that . He would make this face . Rather he was upset or happy about something . He would make me laugh so hard it would hurt . Very funny
8:12 I love how everyone looses it. Tim was a legend.
"You got good color, Mother Harper. Like your blue hair!" That seems to be one of Tim's ad libs. Vicki, Carol, and Harvey were trying hard not to break up!
+SymphonyBrahms
Now, I've watched this particular scene on TH-cam for years and I NEVER ever noticed their reactions to that line til you pointed it out, you sure are right! They're all trying very hard to keep from laughing. Thanks for pointing that out, it's awesome!
They probably did because it wasn't blue.
SymphonyBrahms I could tell the others were struggling not to laugh.
They were. And from my understanding, it was VERY hard to get Vicki to break. Lol
SymphonyBrahms With the blue hair she could fit right in with SJWS today.
Mama cuffing that tub stopper 😂😂😂
Funny. " I like your blue hair broke all their character for 10 seconds. Even MAMA grinned for a while. Bless you Mickey.
I love the Carol Burnett show!! The family skits are my favorite
Everyone one on this show was just so God damned good! I miss tv like this.
I wish that would of casted Tim Conway more on Mommas Family....Those four together were the funniest ever....real comedians
Yes! If only they'd cast Tim Conway, instead of that odious Ken Berry.
roger thornburg ... would HAVE, HAVE, HAVE!!!.... It always bothers me
Tim Conway as the hapless dentist is still one of the funniest skits I've ever seen.
@@megaswenson lord Ken Berry was horrible
@@me-qq6gp That skit and the Hitler puppet skit with Tim and Lyle Waggoner are the funniest ever!!! 😁
Eunice is so ungrateful about Ed's business. Mama too! Last I looked, he's the only one supporting the family. 😂🤣
Ed would be better off moving in with Mickey.
Exactly !!
Yeah, cause according to mama, Eunice would ,"die of starvation with an open magazine in her lap", if Ed ever left her.😂😂
This is bout the only time I've seen Vicki break character.
What the YT video of "Mickey's apartment".. Vicki Lawrence cracks up a couple of times..
@@hankaustin7091 she cracks up in the elephant skit too, she just does a good job of hiding it
@@hankaustin7091 Yep, when they had to dump her out of the beach chair
Lol!
She’s a rock!
@kirbykipling9515 I'll have 2 check it out. Thanks.
Love this! So hilarious, they don't make um like this anymore, this is a classic brightens up my day!!!😄😄😄
TH-cam is good to watch all kind of stuff especially old movies
These Mama's Family skits are genius. And more than 13 minutes long!!!
What a voice Carol has... at 11:10, she exhales the words, "Run this store" in the whistle register :0) She is adorable.
The Best show ever 💕💕💕💕💕nothing can compare😣
I remember back in 1969-late 70s, my mom had the same wall phone in yellow in the kitchen
Same here!
When comedy was precious and priceless. ❤️
Need a dvd collection of all 31 ‘The Family’ skits!
They just don't make good comedy like this anymore. I love these people.
With Eunice the way she is in this skit it makes perfect sense that Ed left her in later seasons. Totally believable even if she does treat everyone badly.
Both of them were too selfish to make a marriage work. It might have helped if they could have moved away and left Mama behind.
Maybe he left her for this woman?
They all put the fun in dysfunctional.
The way Carol practically whistles her second “run this store?!?” Perfection
Oh I wish Time Life would put a few of these single sketches out on DVD? Only the family sketches!
At least Ed loves his job and customers like him
it must have been hard to work with tim conway. just looking at the guy cracks me up.
I think he would throw an ad lib in there just to see who he could crack up. "Love your blue hair!" I saw Vicki break out of her famous scowl.
I know this is an older post I am responding to, but the whole cast had great chemistry and were all so talented. Comedians today cannot hold a candle to these four. Conway was naturally funny and Kerman was the perfect straight man, even though he lost it a lot. I think it’s those moments that made the show even more fun to watch!
@@tookie8888 They would film it twice, once to try to get a take, and then they would try to make each other laugh in the second one. I think they used the second take on purpose, those were everyone's favorites. There wasn't a dry seat in the house!
Love it when Eunice tells Mickey to shut up through his hearing aid!
I love this show! Classic, quality television! Not like the trash they have on tv nowadays.😂😂😂😂😂
This skit makes me laugh, but also makes me sad. Mickey is the only one with compassion. RIP Harvey and Tim.
Mickey was the only friend of Ed's who treated him well.
10:47 "You just shut up or I'll take that little rubber stopper outta your purse and ram it down your THROAT!" :D
Best laughter and I don't care how many years passed 😂...
Eunice, Ed, Mama and Mickey put the FUN in dysfunctional!
...."you gonna hang those butterfly nets on the Christmas tree too?" Love it.
Ed should've said, "No, Mama, I'm gonna hang you on the XMAS tree!"
I'll take those purple light bulbs! 🤣😂
Keisha Nicole TV I wanted purple light bulbs for Halloween! lol
I like the combination of purple and green for spring! 💜💚
Ed needs to order more.
There is no way that I could work with bunch, without cracking up laughing every time!!!! I wouldn’t be able to keep my composer at all!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"I like your blue hair!"
"Give me that phone, you hussy!"
"I am going to the Waldo, Mama, and if you don't want to come, you can climb a tree!"
Eunice is also hilarious every time she gets mad & squints her eyes. Lol!
I love this skit!
And sticks her chin out. Lol
@@audreymai2773 by
I think the blue hair line was ad lib, look at their faces, they're all laughing and looking away!
@@bunkyman8097 I wondered if it was. Seemed they were unprepared for the line That is when they would udually break up. Made the skit funnier though.
'Run this store..' I almost cried!
Sucks never having found a wife. But watching these sketches takes some of the sting out of it. 😃
This is such a great show!
Steven MacPhail
Awwww Steven, if you appreciate these wonderful videos, you shouldn't be alone for long! I'm alone too, but these hilarious clips sure makes life worth living!!
Steven MacPhail
Awwww...I would love a man who I could enjoy shows like this with! I'm a single older lady, by the way.. I'm a big kid at heart!
Been there, done that. Avoid the heartache...trust me, it sucks being stupid and naive and marry the wrong man.
No worry Stephen, women can be such a headache that you may be better off!
That was a great sketch. And Carol Burnett was so funny. She was surrounded by talent. Looking forward to checking out alot more of her show.
