@@epikitee2186 exactly, a lot of his design is very round. His shoes, fingers, eyes, etc. Nobody expects spongebob to be a tough guy, he's very visibly an innocent, bubbly character

@@coixerra7319 Oh, thanks! So the concept is that they're either made by the void or kidnapped into it, and they all have very *very* different views on no longer being human (or witch) or being made from one themself
Also they can leave the void if they need to, but some don't because they're either scared of social contact/outside world or because they're just more comfortable in the solid endless color and lack of stimulus (like trees, wind, smells)

I have a passion project too but it mostly consisted of a crappy magic system and some spooky monsters before I also scrapped the magic and gave them all guns lol. The premise isn't that great but I love each of my characters even if they're probably not the best written. I've worked on this for years too and it went from a light hearted fantasy to a horror in the meantime.

@@coixerra7319 I don't have an Instagram or Tumblr account YET. I'm severely limited to literary stories right now. Once I get the hang of anatomy and character design, I will open those up and start posting comics and stories.
I do have a magic concept in the making, since the void ocs don't technically belong (anymore) to the overall world where most of the stories take place. I may not have the mainstream social media, but I do (cringily enough) have a Wattpad, which is currently empty until I'm better at story telling

Another great example of #4 is from Spider Man Into the Spider Verse! They use different art styles on different kinds of Spider-Men and Women from Anime, Graffiti, Cartoony, Noir, and Comic Book, and yet it never feels jarring
Also a really great use of Shape Language! I wish it was out when I was making this video, because I for sure would have put Kingpin in the square section, he had such a great design!

You’re forgetting another important thing:Emotional and personal attachment.
The crucial thing about that is that a person is more motivated to continue with that character. Those OC’s with personal attachment make it easier to write. (Assuming you are gonna write with them).

Oc 1: Bubbly, happy, chatty, intelligent, and secretly kinda s******.
Oc 2: Cold, sarcastic, serious, blunt, kind of rude

Sabrina: eyes. the eyes are a mix of different colours, which is exactly what my eyes are. also, her eyes glow. as to represent the fact that to me my eyes 'stand out'.
slim: mainly the mask they wear. i wanna hide my face, same with slim. and i wanna wear a cat mask if I do, which is what they have.
elis: taken away from her best friend. i had to move away from my best friend and i have no contact whatsoever. she got separated from her best friend because her parents wanted to 'protect' her.
nameless: i constantly try to be kind, but no matter how hard i try i end up hurting everyone and loving it. Nameless tries to be nice, but ends up hurting or even killing them.
aaron: mental health issues and others. his death is 5u1c1d3 because throughout the whole story he's struggling with self harm, depressive symptoms and 5u1c1d3al thoughts. i also struggle with these.
sara: just kinda pessimistic. i keep looking on the downside of life. of course, i can be optimistic but that's not often.
ty: one personality i have, made into an oc. just a mess. scared, confused, panicked, relies on others etc.
fiz: another personality into an oc. fiz is manipulative, parasitic, just toxic. and may want to kill everyone. more toxic side of me. definitely not a friend.

I literally was laying in bed for 6 hours wondering why I can’t go to sleep, it’s currently 5:51am where I am, then I just remembered that I took my medicine before I slept, which means intotal I had 200 grams of caffeine. During those 6 hours laying in my bed, I created a few new ocs wit a whole plot to correspond with my main story line....I’m still up...oof
Last night I took my medicine and i couldnt sleep for 5 hours after my "original bedtime" (10 pm). The medicine helps but has side effects :')

The biggest shift in my main OC (Anthos) would have to be having him go from an untouchable demonic overlord with legions of hellspawn at his beck and call, to being a literal dad and keeping the other characters from doing dumb stuff on the daily. Here's one of his interactions:
Anthos: "Sterling, you know I respect you not only as a father, but as a man as well."
Sterling: "Okaaay...?"
Anthos: "So would you PLEASE explain to me why you're sliding down my marble staircase with a sled?"

@@swoluigi3828 not neccesarily , if done well OP characters can be extremely entertaining but it is REALLY difficult to pull of constantly ( which is why most writers put some sort of handicap on these characters , a time limit for instance or maybe a mental hinderance)

I reflected my recent character after the "tougher they act the softer they are" saying. She is the leader of a few thousand demons who is dubbed as: "the mistress of moons." (Also shown as her constant use of moonstones in her accessories) She acts like a confident cold blooded killer with no heart but secretly a sympathetic, skiddish, homebody who is protective of her demons like they're her own children. Her usage of an oversized cloak and her black blindfold is a subtile hint that she's not entirely a cold blooded killer deep down hidden under practical use and intimidation/mystery factor. her role is suppose to be the "villian" but she is really an anti-villian. She's a softie who has done bad things because that's how the demons raised her. To keep her inner self in hiding she has a Prideful, lovably arrogant, secretly caring double winged gryphon-like demon who keeps her in check and acts as her "captain-save-a-hoe." The soft personality calms her demons from their usual sadistic and blood-thristy nature. A yin and yang factor, if you will. Sometimes, I wonder if I should change a few things...

I have a realistic art style, how should I use shape language?
Add them into face shapes, or hair styles (or even clothing/ accessories)
Think about the body in a more general sense. Someone fat would roughly have a circular shape; Someone like ,say, the rock would have more of a square body, an hourglass figure is literally two opposed triangles, etc.
You can apply the same logic to other parts of the body like the legs, arms, hands and as logoutoflife said face and hair. I would say the those two plus the torso are the most important.

Lol yeah I probably could have put it better in that first video, but the notes of things that aren’t integral to understanding the character or their story are still important, just not something that the audience should be outright told in a bio unless it’s intended for someone else to use as a reference for writing about the character. Those little bits of trivia like favorite foods (ones that aren’t integral to the character) are still important to developing the character, just not necessary for the bio. If the audience finds out about them at all, they should be found out about naturally. Hope that helps clear things up!

I'm glad you brought it up since costuming is one of the parts that's screwed up the most when designing a character. I think when it comes to an outfit design it should serve two main purposes; 1) well, serve it's purpose well and 2) reflect the character.
What I mean by 1 is something that tends to get screwed up the most. Take an example if you have a character that's a knight, you wouldn't have them wearing a T shirt and jeans. And if you have a character that's a normal High school student they probably won't wear any elaborate suits or gowns
Ad for number 2, it also tends to get screwed up (sorry if saying that is harsh but that's the closest phrase I have)
For an example of a great costume design, I have one in mind that might help make things a bit clearer
Cure Black from Futari Wa PreCure has one of my favorite outfit designs , as it perfectly both reflects her personality and serves it's purpose. It's purpose is to be a flashy and stylish outfit that you could still move around and fight in, and it does show with the cool color choices but also in how it is ultimately simple and practical. As for reflecting her personality, it also does that very well. She's the more battle focused and physically active of the two, and her more practical outfit with the bare stomach and pants reflects that, but also reflects how she still has her girly and childish side with the heavy use of pink to contrast her mostly black outfit
As an example of how not to design outfits, well it's hard to talk about that since I can't really think of any specific examples and I don't want to be mean
A few tips for designing a great costume :
1: always remember your characters' goals, personality and role in the story. This'll prevent you from making outfits that completely contrast everything about your character. Unless you're doing that for a bait and switch then it would be wise to avoid it
2: keep a coherent and simple color scheme. Once again, something that tends to get screwed up. When you're making an outfit, especially if it's for a character that's a super hero or magical girl or something like that. I always suggest to use one main color and then pick up to two sub colors. For example, if your characters' main defining color is blue, then you might make most of their outfit blue and add some white highlights. Or maybe purple instead. Maybe if that character is wearing a dress then her dress would be mostly blue with a white ribbon and purple shoes. It would also be helpful to look at color combinations and the color wheel.
3: make sure it looks pleasing to the eye. This one is simple. Unless a character is intentionally supposed to be hard or nauseating to look at, then don't make them unappealing. Once again, color scheming really helps

It's better to keep the colors simple and the color palette limited rather than use tons of mismatching colors and see what sticks. That's why I say stick to two or three colors and use different shades
I agree with Cure Black being a great example of this! Her outfit is practical, girly but not to the extent that Cure White's is, and the colour scheme works really well!

This is so overwhelming to make a story and make OC’s especially if they just live in your head. When I try to make a character sheet I can’t put their story’s in words
same... i've been struggling with writing a decent enough story for my characters for a long time, so most of them end up getting abandoned...

Abandonment in writing is a myth, just need to rethink your approach. More often than not, when you have all these stories in your head for a character but can't put it on the page, it's not the character you're attached to, but the wonderlust. The new possibilities, the potential. But those feelings will always be flighty and pass. You cannot say you're passionate about the character until you sit down and make those "what ifs" into a "will be"
I once made a Beyblade FC (Not OC) who is a tomboy, but wears a dress like princessy dresses because she feels more comfortable and feels more free and expressive than wearing outfits typical with tomboy archetypes, not because she's a girly or super feminine person who doesn't like boyish things
And it wasn't intended as an error of design, that's part of the point of poking fun of the tomboy archetype and mock the "rule" of "Outfits should always reflect personality" and the people who say it should always be this and that.

Well, I mean, an outfit's gotta reflect the character's personality at some point, that's one of the basic rules of character design. Nobody wears clothes that directly contradicts their personality and beliefs.

@@mysryuza I never said it was a mandatory design rule, it's just that unless the other characters acknowledge that this is a subversion of their expectations, and not just one for the audience, then it usually doesn't work that well. Plus, out of all the tomboys I know (Which is, like, practically every woman I know that isn't my mom), almost none of them would be caught dead willingly wearing a super feminine dress.
So not only is your design blatantly ignoring a fundamental aspect of character design, it's actually highly inaccurate to the demographic it's supposed to represent.

Im a tomboy in real life so most of my OC's are tomboys and i have one (the one I like the most) with blades on the tips of her ears and tail and shes wearing a red hoddie. Most people would think shes Aggressive and dark (blades and hoodie) but she's actually friendly and she loves cooking!
I have a character almost the opposite. My OC, Luke, has a soft, feminine appearance. Their personality, however, is cold, cunning, and not very empathetic. He also doesn't get much sleep, but plays it off with a smile. The only thing maybe showing this is the fact that Luke has constant bags under his eyes.

I have a character, who's a fairy with a cute and childish design and colour scheme, but she's not cute, she's a rude, narcissistic show off, who likes taunting people and flaunting her magic. She's not very nice, she's very dense, and believes that everything she does is a blessing to those around her.
At the what was your character doing before the story etc. part, my OC Tara's checklist appeared in my head:
Before: Breaking free of chains (metaphorically AND physically) with her girlfriend and getting married
During: murdering people to be stronger/ killing off the "hero" group/ spending time with her wife who is also her partner in crime, etc.
After: dead
The "before" is a lot more intricate than that but that was as concise as I could make it

A heart of glass, mind so broken, a breaking connection.
“Hello there.” A voice whispers from the darkest corner of the room.
At least what you assume to be a room. It’s dim lighting makes it difficult to tell.
A small girl with somehow pink hair skips to you holding out her hand. “Hello? You, alright there?” The girl looks you in the eyes confusion filling her voice. She looked to be either 7, or 9.
“You took a big fall!” she chirps hyperactivity. You stare her in the eyes and take her hand. You are still unsure of where you are. The girl trots along a small path in the darkness. Keeping a grip on your hand. She began humming a tune, “Little mockingbird in the tree’s.” You refuse to question it, still a bit shocked. You tapped her shoulder. She turns her head to you. “Hm? Oh you are still confused?” She said in a disappointed high pitched voice. “You’re in V.O.I.D silly!”
You tilt your head in utter confusion. She then continued, “Varying odd inner Demons!” She laughed before chuckling to your confusion. “It’s just called void.” You aggravatedly mumble something about her. She’d not hear this to busy humming that stupid tune. You stare into the road. You look at the dark shapes darting in and out of view. It scares you to think of what those shapes may be.
Part 2.
The girl decided to introduce herself. “My name’s, Kari.” You’d tilt your head to the side.
You ponder what Kari is taking you to. You again peer into the darkness. A new shape darts across it. This shape is reminiscent of a large snake with legs. Kari turns around seeing as you had stopped to look at the shape. She stamps her boot with a loud huff. “Why are you stopping?” You’d not respond your vision still fixated on the shape. She’d tug you along the dark path. Then you noticed a small light. Slowly you realize that Kari is taking you to it. As you enter the shack you see it’s wooden interior. Soft yet shaggy carpeted floor. Along with a window showing you the darkness outside. Kari lights another lantern and trots to the kitchen. She opens a cabinet revealing some boxes. You can’t read any of the labels. She takes out a small cereal box. She pours herself a bowl. The cereal looks like chunks of wood. They’re big and seem hard to chew. She’d look up at you the light revealing her slightly pink hair. She’d say with her mouth entirely full. “Want some?” You’d shake your head and point to the pantry. She’d nod and say you could pick something. You grab the single edible looking box. You pour a bowl. It’s bland but better than nothing. You go to sleep on the sofa. Kari is busy glaring out the window. A scowl on her face. You fall asleep listening to a distant growling and thumping in the distance.
