There is one thing you brushed on: What mood was the charater in when they put on their outfit?
If the charater was/felt rushed when putting something like a school outfit then you could show that they didn't button their shirt right. If they just got of the gym and they are tired then maybe they put something on backwards.
Another thing you could do is mute the colors in their everyday attire to help show that they are distressed, or brighten them to show they're very happy about something. (If you do that though please mindful of how much you change the outfit; to much change can be distracting.)
It kinda ties into personality, occupation, and posing, so if you did mention somewhere in another ingore me.

Mauve cow I kind of use this for my OC’s normal I base what they look like on their personality but sometimes what you said and a big thing with my character’s is if they wear shoes or what shoes they have I have a OC named dusk she almost always wears a dress that kind of looks like what lapis from Steven universe wears ( her old design) dusk is partly based off of lapis and dusk does not have shoes because she has felt no need for them because for almost all of her life she was somehow trapped like she was trapped in this form with her sisters because one of them went insane and made it her goal to kill dusk and after that she was trapped in a flower then she was just trapped in a cage a lot then she died ok back to the shoe thing so normally characters that die young have either sandals or no shoes and older characters I give well made shoes

    8: Color
This goes in so many directions, since color itself is so diverse and responses to them are subjective (re: my favorite color is blue, but I know someone who absolutely hates blue) but there are universal properties that can be applied to character design such as monochromatic color schemes vs complementary color schemes and warm vs cool colors to visually demonstrate a character's personality
Things like the distribution of color can greatly effect their costuming, and how it's accented with other colors. Red and purple and pink for example- look cute together but lean way too easily into making a character look like a valentine's day card or a member of the Red Hat Society, so one needs to be careful with the way these colors are used in order to make a successful character.
Color can also be used to signify allegiances or character arcs- my favorite example of this is Disney's beauty and the Beast, it's quite subtle because Belle is the only person in her village who wears blue and as the Beast's heart changes- leading to the ball room scene, he changes into a blue suit. This was also echoed in the 2017 live action movie with the character Lefou, as he too is dressed in blue when he has his change of heart- and change of sides.
And you can subvert expectations with color as well. The troupe Black is Evil, White is Good was completely obliterated in Dragon Heart (1994) with the hero Bowen dressed in black throughout the movie, while the villain Einon was clad in white.
Honestly I could go on and on about why picking the right colors go a long way toward rocking your character's costumes, but I already feel like I'm rambling so I'll just cut it off there

    • @SharowbladyeGaymerPorate
      @SharowbladyeGaymerPorate 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Megamind also uses color nicely because the main girl first wears red (the sorta opposite to the MC) then purple BC she's trying to talk to him (I think?) and at the end she wears blue bc she's the mc s ally
I might have some things wrong but k saw a bid that explains this

Two tips for costume and character design!
    1. *Keep in mind the character's development as they progress through the story.* The character's design can indicate how a character changes throughout the course of the story. Whether that be perhaps their allegiance, outlook on life, parts of or even entire personalities, age, morals, and so on and so forth. For instance, a previously closed off character can wear duller and less showy or flashy clothing (like maybe a business suit, oversized clothing to hide their figure, etc), but as they open up, they start to wear more flowy and warmer colored clothing (like dresses, skirts, tank tops, etc).
    2. *MAKE VARIATIONS.* A lot of times, it can be hard deciding on a design or aesthetic of costumes for your characters. What I would do is make variations of costume designs for your character(s) according to the setting of your story/world and choose which one(s) suit them best.

Tbh this is some of the stuff I really try focusing on since a lot of my characters live for a decently long time they do change their outfits quite a bit especially my character Sage Alamari. She goes from having a colorful outfit to wearing a lot of black, grey, and red. The main reason is because when she was younger she lived carefree and had a positive outlook on live but after finding out a lot of people want her dead and also that she is now a vigilante she tries to make herself look as intimidating as possible by wearing black leather with spikes and skulls and she even dyes her hair black so that whenever she uses her powers you can see how her hair starts to have red glowing strands appear to give people a warning to not mess with her.

Symbolism is an interesting thing to look at when considering visuals. It is mentioned that the 20s are more characterized by boxy shapes, but boxy shapes in modern clothes can represent, for the author, a methodical behaviour. Yellow, in a different example, could be particularly common to children, representing childhood. It is a more subjective way of thinking and creating costumes, but I find it to be a quite interesting one.

You also have to keep in mind their preference (kinda talked about this but I found it important) Like if the character is used to being warmer or likes to be warmer they will most likely wear warming clothes. For example if your character came from a warmer climate and is now in a cooler climate then they're used to, they will probably wear warmer clothes then everyone else. I have a character who was raised in the underworld with all the fire and stuff. So when he moved in with his God father (pun intended) he bought himself a winter coat and just wears it all the time because it makes it feel like home to him. This won't apply to every one of your characters because humans arin't always like that but it's a fun detail.

I make a lot of fantasy/monster/animal characters, so here is some things to help with that.
Think of their physique and body parts they have. Like a mermaid/fish character. Their clothes would probably be simple and possibly waterproof. Or maybe they wear a bathing suit underneath a jacket and shorts or something.
Body parts. Do they have fur/scales that cover certain body parts? Maybe they don't need to wear as much clothing, since some parts are already covered. What about their feet? Maybe they have hooves or paws, and don't need to wear shoes, or possibly just wear bandages over their feet. Do they have big wings? Maybe their clothes will have an open back. Do they fly? They will probably be skinny and have lighter, looser clothing that will not weigh them down. Be careful with scarves and wings, as a scarf could tie up in wings, and cause them to fall.
Anyway, that's that, hope this helps for all yall fantasy/anthro makers.

Another very subtle thing: don’t just slap a random outfit on your character. Make sure the color palette of the clothing is compatible with your character’s natural color palette (skin color, hair color, eye color, etc). A lot of school uniforms tend to have less eye-catching colors because darker or more natural colors are more likely to compliment a wider range of color palettes. If an all-girls school had a primarily pink uniform, for example, it might fit thematically, but it’d look really terrible on a character with red hair.

  • @seraphinasullivan4849
    @seraphinasullivan4849 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Costume design gets really fun in two circumstances: when the character is relying on someone else for their clothes and when the character knows the rules of costume design.
When someone else is buying or making clothes for a character, it becomes a mesh of both personalities. Even if the providing character takes no consideration of the wants/needs of the character they're dressing, the clothes might be worn in a way that does conform to their wants/needs. When your character knows the rules, they change to suit the vibe they want to give off and every costume takes on qualities of a disguise

There are different eras for you to play with; Minoan & Mycenaean Greece are pretty similar- Dark Ages Greece - Classical Greece ( *everyone* knows) - Hellenistic Greece differed again.
That’s not going into regional differences; everyone knows Athens, Sparta, Macedon, Thrace & Crete - but what about Lydia? Euboea - Ionia - Arcadia - Thessaly - Messina or Argolis, for example.

i have many characters, and they all take place in different times, locations, and universes. but they all eventually tie into each other at some point. they all have different appearances depending on the story, place, time, aesthetic, and person. sometimes i go unique, but not too crazy. you helped me with this a lot.
    some examples i used:
heart universe: everyone from this universe are magical, and all bear heart wands, and have different elemental powers, mostly mixed. they also have strange features, like horns, wings, scales, patterns, or other unusual features. they also wear a lot sparkles and soft, yet bright colors. this is supposed to give a dreamy, magical, and astral look to them. after all, they are magical and from another world.
nero: he used to be a king, and used to be highly respected. he had crystal powers, too. so having crystal jewelry (like necklaces and earrings) would make sense for this. he also was frozen by himself on accident for 1000 years, so he looks very ancient.
of course, some of my older characters look strange and out of place, but with the help of this video, now i can learn how to improve. thanks.

I would say to study and use references for time periods like Victorians. I did a Victorian drawing with a picture from a book and then I did another a week later when I no longer had the book the referenced one looked like it really was a Victorian girl and not one in a costume from smyths (the toy shop where I live)

When designing a character from another time period think about what social class they came from. Are they middle class, upper class, or poor? What is their profession? Are they a farmer or an English lord? It's fun to create the fashions for characters. I really enjoy history. Great video! 😁👍🏻

    I have a few examples and tid-bits:
In a project my sister and I are working on, we have vehicles as humans. This includes ocean liners. Every ocean liner has red-orange, white, and black in their design to show that they are connected, mainly by occupation, but Californian is not an ocean liner but looks similar. My sister's solution was to replace the white with pink as the ship had a time where her smokestack(s?) was/were pink. It shows that she isn't an ocean liner despite looking similar to one.
Another thing from the same project is you don't always need to match the time period exactly. We found that characters stand out more if we have modern elements no matter when the character is from. An example: Fokker, the Red Baron's Fokker triplane. His outfit looks similar to a red version of a WWI German aviator outfit but isn't. His hair is also very different in a style more akin to an anime character. In contrast, Britannic's only non-period accurate design element is color but it fits their histories.
Fokker stands out, his real-world counterpart was painted to be seen, a warning to the Entente. Britannic, on the other hand, is the forgotten Olympic-class sister so her outfit making her seem simpler and less noticeable makes sense. Of course, next to the other characters, she stands out, both to be a memorable design but also as an (accidental) reference to her want to be noticed and remembered.
TL;DR: Characters can be made to stand out by not having totally historically accurate outfits.

However with modern day stuff. I’d say the stakes are more lenient as if you saw someone in modern day in hippie clothes it’d seem a little odd but not too out of place just do to how things have been and how people have such a different preference and are more free to wear those clothes of preference than earlier time periods
Although it also depends on character personality
Are they gonna be the type to allow themselves to wear what they want
Or are they gonna try and fit in with the crowd.

one example i love for aestetic is in star wars, the costume designers had a hard and fast rule of NO ZIPPERS. any other closure system could be used; buttons, velcro, rivets, lacing, straps, etc, but no costume in star wars has a zipper, at least not that can be seen.
another good example would be costumes from the MCU films. almost every costume has piping or lines running throughout the suit. even where piping wouldn't be applicable, like Dr. Strange, or the asgardian characters, they create the same lines by using pleats and folds in the fabric, or raised details in armor. it gives a connective design element that ties everyone together.
