@@isaacm7934 I can see what you mean, personally I disagree with Immortal characters, just for the reason that they are extremely hard to "kill" or "injure" severely. Then once you get into role-play territory with that character whether it be on a game such as.. The Isle, Wolf Quest, or a simple plat-form such as Roblox. When someone starts an fight with you unless you are well knowledged in proper RP etiquette, and have decent grammar, power playing is almost always bound to happen with that character. Sometimes you might not even notice it! Crazy huh. I'm speaking from experience and my own opinions as I'm a writer / role - player of 5 years. I do traditional art aswell but that's a different story. If you want to have less trouble if you plan to use that character publicly with other people. Maybe take away the fact that he's immortal, and instead make him extremely powerful but give him just as many weaknesses, unless he's an overpowered anime character? Even then be extremely careful with power playing. Though you will have alot less troubles if you make him mortal, just wanted to give my opinion! Not looking to start a fight or anything! Though if you want to chat more about this im happy to share my discord.

I unironically thought this'd be a list containing some of the tools you could use to hypothetically beat an OC in combat, considering how many unnecessarily overpowered OCs exist.
and this is why some people i know just carry around weapons that have the ability to kill off any character permanently, regardless of abilities, protection, etc. (they're only used as a last resort though.)

Most of my furry ocs are any pastel colour, white, grey, black/dark dark grey, and cedar brown. I usually stick to light colours though.

1. Growing up to realise you were glorifying trauma and now you can’t look at the OC without cringing violently
That was my first OC that I actually developed and experimented with via roleplaying. There was always some seriously disturbing twist even to the most wholesome and platonic roleplays, and my friends both then and now only really enjoy hurt/comfort.
I realised years later that things turned out that way because I was traumatised and had no way to cope. I was 10-12 back then.

Personal tips:
If your character has a “theme” in their design (I.e, they’re an elemental spirit), choose one and STICK TO IT. I have a world where the dominant species are elemental beings, and when designing each kind, I made sure that they followed the elemental direction.
If you’re making a demon OC, for the love of Christ, don’t make them Mary Sues or edgy! Give them disadvantages and flawed parts of their personality. This makes for characters who are more believable, and doesn’t make their stories boring.
Idk, maybe saddle one with a curse every once in a while.
Sassy/hot tempered characters are fun, but don’t make them so much that they’re easy to hate. And don’t make their whole thing sass. It’s okay if it’s a fairly central part of their character, but try adding another important trait. Make them smart, or a good leader! This tip really just applies to all kinds of personalities.

If you have like a species, play around with different concepts for characters of that species! For example, if you have an ice themed species, try creating one that’s black ice, since that exists! Or if you create a hybrid of an air species that are anthro birds and a fire species, theme them to a phoenix!
If they have a tragic backstory, make it affect their personality; make them quiet and closed off, or a jokester that’s hiding their trauma.

as someone who's been developing a certain character for 2+ years of lore now, you've definitely added some points we might have to check in on... up until recently, Luna had been plagued with this demonic entity that fed off of any sort of frustration or rage, but that... got old. it was stifling her own development as both a person and as a psychic rock, so we finally eviscerated the thing a couple months ago... and things have been mostly quiet since.

I recommend giving your character a favorite thing (food, drink, item etc), it can help with many things such as : making your viewers more attached to them, your viewer will give your oc more attention if they can relate to them ( dont just make the oc relatable to only you, think of other people, their struggles, their flaws, their needs ... everybody has them but in different ways !),
The viewer can also easily distinguish your character if you do this. Lets say... character A likes candy, the sour kind, if there was a scene where character B is in a train eating sour candy, the viewer may reference character A just by this small detail, it can also help with your mind map for the character (a mind map is basically when you write a word that you feel is fitting to your character and then writing words that are similar/give off a better feeling to your character and choosing which words you want to use to design your character or to write their backstory)

I'd add on the color thing:
While it's generally good to limit your palette and not use too many wild, excessive, and distracting colors when trying to make a design that you can draw repeatedly or is clear and straightforward, it can be fun to subvert this by making a character that is deliberately the opposite of clear or straightforward. This is seen more in aesthetics like scenecore, webcore, and cluttercore, and the numerous eye-blinding colors are often supplemented by an excess of accessories or design elements that deliberately make it look disorientingly complex. They're fun! Creating one is also a good way to see what level of detail you're comfortable with drawing.

Just a tip and personal preference, while I don't have multiple OC's I'd say that if you have more than like 3, give them a distinct sihlohouet. So just make your whole character pitch black and make a white background and see how distinguishable it is from your other OC's. It just helps quickly show who's who without the reader focusing too much attention. Either that or make your characters colors stand out from your other OC's

For the color one, I feel like there are many exceptions, say for kidcore and weird core OCs the bright, neon colors will work perfectly.
don't know if anyone in the comments have talk about this but I'm gonna mention this anyway. not only is the design integral to the character but how they're written and work with other characters as well. this is a very often glossed over step when making a character for a story is how they work with both the world and the other characters in the story.
this is why making a character with dynamic personality is important but you don't want to make them too dynamic to the point where it feels like you're making excuses to put them in every situation.
sorry if that's pretty drawn out but the way you write a character can be just as important as how you design them.

Honestly a lot of the cringiness from OC’s is just from lacking experiance. When I was a kid the most complex characters were orphaned gifted children who learned how to karate chop at the age of two and were ultimately always right about things. And the younger they were the more impressive their feats were made out to be.
So in an attempt to make interesting complex characters, I made- you guessed it- tragic magic children who were smarter than everyone else.
I didn’t really understand that mich about the larger world and wasn’t yet exposed to the many nuances of life that inspire mature, realistic characters.
Heck it took me a while to dare list a “favorite activity” that wasn’t drawing :,D
So while I do very much appreciate everyone providing this much needed advice, I also don’t feel a need to scold bad characters just bc more and more kids (and just beginners in general) are on the internet now, and they’re just waddling about on their little infant artist legs trying to do things.

My favorite OC is my mary sue because he's a non-mary-sue mary sue. Yea, he has those powers, yea, he could do that. But he doesn't and honestly just lives a normal-ish life.
He literally breaks so many of the 'rules' for a good OC yet he's still always gonna be my favorite.

He's a gunslinger cowboy who was hit by a train and put into a coma for 10 years. He's 7 feet tall, his chin sticks out atleast half a foot, and he wears a huge chain with a gigantic disc of solid gold that says "J" on it.
It's just more fun to create goofy characters like these, instead of serious and edgy ones that are incredibly one-note.

As someone who plays D&D, I can confirm that one of the big things that can kill an oc is a glaive through the heart.
0:40 for some reference sheets some information may be important while on others it may not like giving the reason for your characters name, for some fandom ocs this may be seen as clutter or not needed but for other fandoms like warrior cats it may be needed. Like I have a warriors character named sage mask she was named sage because she was born in a patch of sage that was protecting her mother and brother from a hawk she got the suffix mask to honor her brother who died protecting her and some other clan mates from a badger, in some fandoms names have more meaning than in others. Just know the fandom you are making a character from and research other refsheets from said fandoms community

I completely agree Ando. Posing, simplicity, color, and contextual details are critical to a good character design. I often struggle with the posing and details.

Good tips. Honestly, posing is one of my major weaknesses. I struggle to decide which poses to draw characters in. Even though I started redesigning my characters last year, I still need to re-visit their bios and flesh out their personalities.
Try using references. That's how you learn to pose better.
I recently decided to get better at drawing, so this is really helpful!

I’m pretty sure that out of all of these, the main issue with my characters would be the ref sheet layout or an overabundance of text in the character bio, but until I get my characters out to a wider audience I don’t think I’ll be 100% sure. I’ll keep these in mind though! 👍

This question forces the concept of “downtime” into the creator’s mind. Most creators only ever imagine their creations in the midst of enacting whatever role they were made for, and end up basing their character off a single trait, occupation, or activity. When you try to imagine them stuck in their hypothetical home for an entire day, if you either freeze or only come up with hobbies related to that single trait, occupation, or activity, the character is a tad flat. No human being can go an entire day alone focused on literally one thing. Not unless extraordinary factors are at play.

also here are some other things that can REALLY negatively affect ocs and your storyline as a whole
1. too many variations of the same character concept. you really shouldn't need more than ~4-5 versions of one basic archetype
2. unintentionally adding too much of your own personality into a character. now this might sound strange but trust me if you're trying to write an important part of your lore script you do NOT want your sweet kind sensitive character cursing a billion times and making sarcastic remarks left and right just because that's how _you'd_ react to that situation. special emphasis on this if you're doing a roleplay as your character since once that rp is over it's pretty hard to undo any mistakes
3. writing their full story arc too quickly. if you like your characters you really gotta take your time with 'em or else they become unusable after a week
4. writing characters either too consistently or not consistently enough. there's a very fine balance between a believably complex character, a way too predictable character, and a character that acts more spontaneously than the youtube moderation team
5. making all of your ocs over 7' tall. this isn't that big of an issue in reality its just something i've done and come to regret because i end up having characters that i imagine to be around 1.5x the height of an average human and suddenly their canon height is as tall as a 3 story building😭
all of these notes are from personal experience
also i write predominantly humanoid nonhuman characters so this stuff might be different for humans or animals

4:50 - if you can see in my Rivali speedpaint and profile pic (and most of my DA submissions) I have very simple / little amount of colour palettes. Take half-moon (profile ofc) for example. It’s grey/silvery grey, black and bright yellow/white. It’s also been designed so that the yellow/white stand out like moons on the grey/black. Rivali is literally made up of greens and silver. And I have unpublished art for another oc Alta who is pale red on the main area, pale orange stripes, and on the feathered parts (underbelly, spine ridge, top of head, wings and a fan at the end of the tail) it is white and each feather is lined with gold as that is a very regal colour scheme.
I am VERY late to this vid, but, how does everyone feel about character bio templates? The ones you just fill out your character info with. I think they're great, especially for people who aren't amazing at keeping themselves organized. I use them all the time honestly, since I am extremely unorganized. And there's so many people that make really great ones! I'm honestly glad people take the time to make them, and you can find atleast one for every community out there, which is a plus!
