Testing Vallejo Metal Color - The Acrylic Alternative To Solvent Based Metalizer Paints Like Alclad

  • In todays video I revisit Vallejo's Metal Color acrylic paints. For many hobbyist out there, an acrylic is their only option. While there isn't as many color options to choose from, what I have here is pretty good. It's also durable which is a plus. Another bonus is it has zero smell.. Another bonus is they seem to go on really well without a primer.
While in my opinion these are no where near as good as the solvent based metal colors like Alclad and AK Extreme, they are a good choice for the hobbyist who only uses acrylics.

hands down the BEST acrylic metallics. Period. I ditched the Scale75 line for these. The gold is a bit green but Vince Ventrulla mixes 3 drops Gold, 2 drops Copper and a bit of Green Stuff world Antique gold pigment powder and it is a game changer.

    • @blakearius

Is it really better than scale75 though. I recently did a brush on test with AK range, 4 of these paints and I had scale75 decayed metal.. I found these vellejo pretty watery but the scale 75 one came out smoother than anything else. Or are you just talking about airbrushing?

Get AK Interactive 3rd gen and if you want a ice gold try the green stuff world pure metal pigments that can be mixed with master medium or metal varnish. Also AK makes lots of acrylic metals, and wax metal paints that are almost like oils that somebody can polish. just saying. Citadel makes good paints too.

I absolutely love the Vallejo Metal Finish line. I used the Dark Aluminium and Aluminium on my NX-01 build. You really do need a gloss black primer like Alclad for best results. Also you don’t need their varnish I just clear coat with Tamiya TS-13 Gloss and it retains the metallic shine. You can even use a matte clear like Duplicolor wheel matte for a nice matte finish.

Barbatos man you are really onto something by adding color to white aluminum. I bought some Vallejo Metal Medium and was extremely disappointed with the results. It’s basically just mixing Pearl White with your base color 1:1 and BARELY gives it a pearlescent look that is not really noticeable from afar. The Metal Color is just what i needed to make real metallics in different flavors. The results mixing with the White Aluminum were night and day better than their Metal Medium which is pure crap imo. Once again you point me in the right direction and the reason you are my Go-To guy for paint tips. 👍

After doing a bit of testing myself, I'm beginning to think the trick with these metallics paints across the board isn't so much undercoating them with gloss black as much as it is having a glass smooth undercoat. If your undercoat is grainy or pebbly, it ruins the metallic look we crave. I've actually heard (not seen) guys undercoating simply with a clear gloss over primer with fantastic results. Same with gloss royal blue. It would be interesting to see the results of such a test. Unfortunately, I'm not currently in a position to try such a test.

  • @Pkhk1987
    @Pkhk1987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was really eager to see the primer because I have a bottle of that Vallejo gloss black primer and mine keeps looking more satin when I put it on. I can’t work out what I’m doing wrong, but I had not tried thinning it in the airbrush so I may try that to see if it makes a difference (and I definitely shook the bottle for ages and even used an electric paint stirer- no difference).

For coloring, try metal color (e.g. duraluminium) with inks (e.g. FW) for more intensity and use the transparency of the inks to keep more metal shine.

Molotow One4All is also a amazing acrylic paint, I use it to prime with (Black, Grey, and White) it was designed to be weatherproof so it is super durable but it was also designed to flow through a felt pen nib so it sprays through a airbrush like a dream with no additives or thinners. I am about to start airbrushing and have made a playlist of your videos to make notes when I attempt it myself. Sadly FedEx delayed my paints and GSI Creos Mr. Airbrush Procon Boy PS-289 0.3mm Platinum.... What I haven't seen (yet?) is what paints need primers and/or whether you can use a clear coat on certain or all paint types.
I know you have many different videos detailing what is needed. But would you every make an "All-In-One guide" video explaining to how to airbrush each of the paint types (e.g. metallics, fluorescent, enamels, acrylics, others)? Also what thinners, primers and bases are recommended with brands like Vallejo, Mr. Color, so on.

With acrylic I guess the paint is less forgiving if you go ticker compared to solvent based like Alclad. I found that thin coats work best for Alclad but you do need a top coat. I'm curious if you could make a video about different kinds of thinner for both Acrylic and solvent paints. What dries quicker and doesn't affect the finish. I generally use IPA. It works with my Alclad and acrylics and it dries really fast after spraying.

If there is no clear coat on top, when I tried using mr weathering color and the it's respective solvent, it will eat through the metallics. They really need to have some sort of clear coat on top. • @mikecrophone6673

I tested the Chrome and Gunmetal over their Gloss Black Primer. Looks and feels great! But the Gloss Black Primer seems sticky even after dried (cured?) for 2 days, still a bit sticky. Dont know whether it is normal or what.

I've actually had some problems time to time with their Gloss black primer. Not sure why. You can try thinning it a bit more. That helped me. Also you don't need to use their primer, I use Alclad Gloss Black Base and Tamiya Gloss Black spray cans. Both work awesome with these. Keep me posted

@@barbatosrex9473 I have always thinned their products, Mecha primer, Surface primer, this Gloss Black primer, Mecha Color line, and thanks to you now, their Metal Colors line! My "Vallejo Ratio" is 2 Paint : 1 Thinner : 1 Flow Improver (I don't follow their instructions with 10:2 ratio). At least always works best for me, even with this ratio, tip drying still happened. But this specific Gloss Black Primer, I may need to try to thin it more than that :D thank you for your heads up.

These are pre thinned so straight out of the bottle into the airbrush. PSI is 15 for the metal color and 15 to 20 psi for the clear. The varnish is also pre thinned so it's good to go

Have you tried the brass colour of this or any other brands? For some reason or another we cannot get the Alclad polished brass colour (ALC 109) here in Canada so I'm looking for an alternative to do several pairs of brass doors on an Ho train station. I find Vallejo SO confusing! They have far too many choices. Liquid Gold line. Metal Color line. Liquid Metal line. Now a Premium Metal line. Probably more, that I am unaware of. I get a headache watching endless brands, and various ranges. It would be nice to see you do a consolidation of all these countless brands....and just give us your wrap up as to the best. Perhaps by chemical makeup. Laquers, Alcohols, Enamels, Acrylics. And why. Ease of use, coverage, durability, forgivness, best shine. Etc.
