Thank Mr. Rex, for this video. I just watched it today 11-27-23. As Tamiya is one of my go to paints since model masters is unavailable now. I do both brush & air brush painting with tamiya. Great tips BR! Been using Tamiya acrylic paints for decades and am not in a hurry to try the newer brands out there. One exception is the Gunze acrylic solvent based paints for Luftwaffe specific colors. The Gunze and the Tamiya paints appear to be very compatible. I would encourage people new to the hobby to use Tamiya paints for the least hassle and a reduced learning curve. Lastly, I like to use alcohol to "wash" my kits before I paint them. Do let the alcohol completely air dry. Some people use water and detergent but I don't want any risk of soap residue lingering.

Great video! I just recently got in to airbrushing and started with Tamiya. I was having a hard time with orange peel with their glosses. Found out my home's humidity was at about 25% and I had the pressure set too high. Bought a humidifier and am now shooting at 12 psi and I'm getting solid results. It was also partly a technique issue too.
Brush painting with these has been rough! It just dries way too fast. I had no idea Tamiya made retarder for it. I'll have to pick some up and try my luck again!
Thanks for all the tips. I learned a bunch. This was a much anticipated video since I've been messing with this stuff a lot on my own lately.

I just want to say thank you for all the tutorials and reviews you do! I picked up an airbrush recently myself as a beginner model painter (the cordless Casubaris you did a review on to boot) and your videos have been invaluable in teaching me among many others!
I tried today painting some of the inner frame of a Gunpla kit (MG Age II Magnum) in gunmetal and it has been turning out very well so far! I did spill some paint doing your "top off the jar with thinner" tip while mixing, but that was my fault!
I also frequent Gundam Pros, and Walter over there mentioned you and your paints while I was asking him about painting once, which is how I found your channel. Once my skills improve I would love to try some of your paint lines! Thanks again for all you do.

I love the Tamiya glass bottles and often keep them for reuse. One tip is to place the cap open side down, that way paint doesn't run down into the threads and compromise the seal. Also, Windex works wonderfully for cleaning tools and stripping Tamiya acrylics if you goof on your model.

Btw, for those looking to buy a paint mixer, you can buy a coffee stirrer/milk forther for as low $6. The bottom coil are large, but I don't know if that would make a difference or not, but it might work the same for less. Just like the pet hobby, a lot of products marketed specifically for the modleing/crafting hobby can often be found for less in "generic" form.

Words of caution with the Badger mixer. Slowing it down will prematurely burn up the motor. Also, the end part of it that goes into the paint causing the agitation is press fitted on and when bumped against the sides of the jar over time will eventually begin to loosen it, which will then throw its balance off and it will no longer spin true causing back splash while mixing along with a mess. The thing is an absolute must have but should definitely be better quality for what they cost. The bottom insides of tamiya jars are convex, which means that with the mixer you still don't get a thorough mix as the end of the mixer is only touching the sediment at the center bottom of the jars. The sediment in the edges goes untouched. You should first use a stir stick to dislodge the edge sediment, then use the mixer. Then you will get a 100% thorough mix with full pigment. I want to add to what Rex said about keeping your jar edges clean, also keep your inner caps clean. Not only will air possibly get in, but also you run the risk of you caps being locked on or extremely difficult to remove. Klean-Strip lacquer thinner at $8 a quart is a far cheaper alternative for cleaning and thinning Tamiya paint over Tamiya thinner and you get allot more versus paying almost $10 for 250ml and the klean strip flashes very fast allowing you to immediately get to assembly after painting

Question: on small parts, do you airbrush them on the sprue then cut them off sand the flash and touch it up with a paintbrush? Or do you remove it and dress it completely then attach it somehow?

After hand painting 2 kits, and airbrushing 2 kits, I'm very conflicted. The hand painted kits are far from perfect, have brush strokes, and have some inconsistencies, but whenever I look at them on the shelf, I'm filled with pride. They took way longer but I really enjoyed the process.
Practiced airbrushing for 20 minutes and it completely blew away my hand brushing, no pun intended. The two kits I did look great, but I dont care for how they look lol. I didn't have fun either. I'm not sure which path to take from here.

Hello Barbatos! Thank you for your video contributions, which are really very helpful. Since you have a certain scope and influence with your large number of subscribers, I have to reprove you on one important point! In your video you explained several times how beautiful the colors can be washed off in the sink. Acrylic paints are declared as dangerous substances and must never enter the sewage system! Please read the product regulations on safety, health and environmental protection carefully and dispose of the paint as hazardous waste. If you don't stick to it yourself, that's definitely your personal affair, but as I said, a lot of people watch your videos and act on them. Please do not lead them to pollute the environment! I just couldn't accept that.
Thank you very much for your understanding!
    Kind regards
    Jens

It's a lacquer so treat it the same. Good ventilation and a respirator. Tamiya has its own unique smell, many call it the "sweet smell" but it is a strong smell. That said, these practically spray themselves, they're that easy to use

Thanks once again Rex. I've always had problems with brushing Tamiya acrylics and you have just given me the answer to my problem. Can I use any paint retarder or is Tamiya the only way to go.
Also I make my own thinner for Tamiya acrylics which is 40% IPA(99% alcohol), 60% distilled water and a few drops of flow improver or glycerine.
For a cleaner I use home made 50% ammonia free Windex, 40% distilled water, 10% IPA and a few drops of glycerine. I Don't use Windex with ammonia as I'm told the ammonia will damage seals in the airbrush.
You are the best source of all thinks paints.

    • @barbatosrex9473
      @barbatosrex9473  ปีที่แล้ว

It will work but it's a much more "Hot" thinner. The hobby thinners and alcohol are much less hot and will never cause damage where as the hardware store thinner could ruin model plastics
