This is the new BMW X1 - and, for the first time ever, you can also get the X1 as a fully-electric car called the BMW iX1!
Let’s start off with the X1. It’s had some design tweaks from the previous model, including thinner headlights and more angular brake lights, and comes with the option of huge 20-inch alloy wheels for the first time.
The biggest changes come inside the cabin though, where the X1 is completely different to older BMWs because most of the buttons have been removed! The only physical controls are on the steering wheel and floating armrest between the front seats. Instead, you’re meant to control everything by using the ‘Hey BMW’ personal assistant.
You can get the new X1 with a range of petrol and diesel engine options, including some with mild-hybrid tech. BMW has also developed two new plug-in hybrid engines for the X1. The entry-level 25e produces 245hp and can make 0-60 in 6.8 seconds, while the quicker 30e version gets 326hp in total and a 0-60mph time of 5.7 seconds.
The new all-electric BMW iX1, meanwhile, has dual motors that can produce a combined 313hp and accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds. It should have a range of 272 miles, which is more than the range of the Mercedes EQA.
The X1 goes on sale later in 2022, with prices starting from just over £35,000 and rising to almost £47,000 for the top-spec 23d M Sport Premiere Pro. Plug-in hybrids and the new electric iX1 will go on sale soon after, with the EV expected to set you back more than £50,000.
So, if you’re in the market for a small SUV, could the X1 or iX1 be for you? Stick with Mat to find out!

Getting rid of physical buttons has got to be the worst trend in modern car design (even worse than BMW's ginormous kidney grills). Having to use a touch screen or a wonky voice command system for climate control or rudimentary media functionality is an absolute dealbreaker for me. I won't buy a car that forces me to do that. Not only is it a safety concern, it is just awful usability.

I was like wow, they didn't screw anything up design-wise and actually made the headlights look even better than pre-LCI... then I saw the interior with the iDrive and gauge cluster. Just two iPads glued together and tacked onto the dash without physical climate control. The interior looks way too plain and simple for 35k. I'd expect more physical control with knobs/buttons with the car. Pure laziness and not what I want when starting base price is $35k USD. I mean I'm really happy they didn't do anything with the grille or bumper, so it could be worse. BMW recently seems to always have this mantra of two steps forward one step backward. "Hey we made the headlights look cooler, didn't increase the grille size, and improved engine performance but we removed all physical controls"
Audi has stayed true and actually built the dash around the virtual cockpit digital gauge cluster and has always been the leader in lighting technology. They're the only German brand still building the dashboard around the digital screens and not just tacking the screens on the dash. They may be removing physical climate controls in their higher-end models which I'm not happy about, but it's not like I'm spending $55k USD to have no physical buttons and a screen glued onto my dash. Love my 4 rings.

If you're going to replace your damaged battery pack with a remanufactured one, the average cost would probably be around $13,000 to $17,000, depending on the complexity of the work. However, if you opt for a completely new battery, you should be ready to shell out upwards of $25,000.
