Text Recognition vs. Fiction Prose: comparing Scribe, Supernote, and reMarkable

  • Could you handwrite a draft of your novel on one of these devices? Sure. Will the text recognition save you time and work? Debatable! I try it out on the Kindle Scribe, reMarkable 2, and Supernote A6X. (Since I wrote this passage out 3 separate times, the handwriting was a little different on each, thus affecting the recognition function so it's not a pure test with a control!)

08:36 Supernote A6X (in Real Time Recognition mode which I did not state very clearly!)
    15:01 Longer document on Scribe
17:12 Longer document on reMarkable (yes I ultimately blurred this, sorry, but accuracy was similar to Scribe)

I came across your channel as I was browsing for Scribe reviews (- I've now bought one, very much for reading) and promptly became a subscriber. Not because I'm gadget-fixated, but because it's so rare to find such a thoughtful, cultured and engaging TH-camr. Hope those subscriber numbers go up; you deserve it.

On the rM2 text conversion works best if you use ruled or grid templates rather than blank. It handles my writing really well this way.

Thanks for the video. I have received Remarkable 2 and am thinking of returning it (its unopened) for A6X2. I am not sure if the size would be too small.
What is your experience with A6X and Remarkable 2? I am just worried if I open it, I will have trouble returning it.

I haven't had any experience as far as doing returns with either of those, but I think unopened stuff is generally easier to deal with. Supernote returns are definitely more of a pain. Either of these are pretty easy to resell (and reddit has special subforums for selling them) if you're willing to lose a little money but save some time. I have both and like both. I wouldn't want the A6X size to be my only one just because sometimes you want/need that extra screen space. ESPECIALLY if you're planning to do much annotating of PDFs/docs. I don't find the A6X size big enough for that.

@@WritersLike So do you think Remarkable 2 is a good device for annotations and reading? Is it possible to do a comparison video between the two if you can? Maybe Shorts.
      Thanks

@@FawadBilgrami Are you talking specifically about PDFs? I really don't use the A6X for that - it's too small for me and my vision. They work pretty well on the reMarkable and Scribe. I'll consider it for a future video!

The wait should not bother me. I would use it when I needed a break.

Very good point - I don’t know what the hurry would be now that you mention it!

Hi! I’m about to enter to this e ink notebooks and can’t decide if supernote or remarkable … is it true that the supernote feels like writing with pen? (The texture) and the remarkable feels like pencil? I’m wondering because writing with pencil (for me) is a bit tiring and prefer the feeling of pen… so maybe would be a thing to consider? Which would be your choice? 😊

Personally, I don't think any devices feel like writing on paper with anything. I never write with pencil on paper, because I don't like it, but I love the feel of the reMarkable. I think the Supernote is a little gel-pen-on-paperlike but it's not an exact correlation. It also kind of depends what pen you use. The Supernote ceramic nib pens are more gelish feeling, but other pens feel different. It's really hard to describe! All I can say is that any of them feel way way better than writing on an iPad with an Apple Pencil!

I really dislike writing on hard screens of regular tablets and I had the same dilema. I went with a supernote for my first e-ink device and I really love it. The supernote's screen flexes just enough for the writing to feel natural. The screen is very textured at first and needs to be "broken in" but it doesn't take long.
I was incredibly sceptical but I don't regret it :].

Do you use paper notebooks at all anymore? I've been trying to transition to using my RM2. I have the A6X2 Nomad on pre-order and I'm hoping the size is my problem. Because the siren call of paper and a smooth writing pen is impossible for me to resist. 😂

Honestly, I've been surprised how quickly I went all-in with e-ink over paper. I used to just have stacks of notebooks and bought them compulsively and had storage bins full of half-filled ones. I've been at e-ink notebooks over a year now, and I haven't found myself going back to paper. I used to be obsessed (paper, fountain pens, inks, etc) and now I guess this is my obsession!

P.S. I think you'll love the Nomad. I find myself picking up the A6X much more in line with how I used to use paper notebooks.

@@WritersLike Oh yes. The life of the stationery addict. I'm starting to feel very overwhelmed by it all. I think it will help to limit my choices. LIke...which notebook should I use. The A6X because that's all there is.

I could barely read your writing on the Remarkable effort while it was much more readable on the Supernote effort. So it is hard to claim the Remarkable was a failure. I have both the Remarkable and the Scribe and in general the Scribe does the best with handwriting recognition, but the formatting is just plain text.

    • @WritersLike
      @WritersLike  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I did not say the RM was a failure, I said it was not the best for this particular demonstration. Handwriting will always vary, so we'd be looking for the one that is kind of overall giving the most usable results.

Ever hear of the Newton 2100? Made in the 90's, it did its recognition on the fly while you wrote.
