Kobo Libra Colour Walk-Through
I think I've found the perfect e-reader for me. The notebook usability depends on how well you can tolerate the not-great writing experience, but as a pure e-reader with DIRECT ACCESS to library books it gets two big thumbs up from me!
🙏🏻 Watch to the end for a question I have for viewers.
(Sorry for the air conditioner noise!)
In summary:
☑️ The good:
- Physical page turn buttons (plus ability to turn with swipes and taps)
- Full auto-rotation
- Crisp, bright screen
- Ability to highlight in color / color-code
- Ability to write directly on books (yep!)
- Lightweight and suitable for long stretches of reading
- Ability to connect with Dropbox and Google Drive
- Check out library books DIRECTLY from Overdrive though the Kobo store just like buying a book (I can die happy!!)
- Connect your Kobo account to your favorite local bookstore and they get some money when you buy books
- Advanced notebook features that Scribe will probably never give us
- See your bookshelf covers in color - pretty!
☑️ The not-so-good:
- The writing feel/experience/responsiveness. If you've never used any other write-on e-ink device, it might be okay, but if you're used to anything like the Supernote, Scribe, reMarkable, etc...it's a big downgrade.
- The device feels cheap, but OTOH it IS affordable and the light weight makes it very comfortable for reading in bed.
- Based on past experience with Kobos, I doubt it will last as long as my Kindles have and I bought the extended warranty just in case.
The pros outweigh the cons for me be a lot, as someone who is in love with libraries and appreciates a company that makes it easy for me to get my library books!

I am not currently wowed, given what I would call legibility issues. On the other hand, for me writing doesn't necessarily need to be about SEEING what I'm writing. It would just...be nice?? I've run this test on my other three devices, now trying it on the Note Air 3C. I'm not sure why it wasn't faster, given that I set it to recognize in the background, but as a commenter pointed out last time - what's the hurry? It did okay with quotation marks and punctuation. The overall accuracy was not amazing, not terrible, but if I examine the mistakes it made against my handwriting, I can...

Could you handwrite a draft of your novel on one of these devices? Sure. Will the text recognition save you time and work? Debatable! I try it out on the Kindle Scribe, reMarkable 2, and Supernote A6X. Between myself and my mom, my Kobo Clara has been in use (though not daily) for about 10 years. You might be surprised! Also, these new models apparently can have parts replaced through a partner company. Their goal for the color line is longevity.

I adore your review. Thank you! I’m a librarian myself haha! I’ve worked in a library for many years. But, I’ve also owned a kobo for a long time because I’m Canadian. I’ve never had a kindle 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also love that overdrive is right in the system. I’m excited for my kobo libra colour to arrive tomorrow! (I also grew up poor so I can relate to exactly what you’re saying)

Why don’t you at least show evidence of knowing what you’re talking about first. Why bother making a video meandering through the functions like a person who hasn’t spent more than five minutes familiarising themselves with the devices? Sloppy and lazy.

Awesome review! Thank you for taking the time to make it! Your step through of the Overdrive feature is what sold me in the end, so much appreciated! I have read into other reviews that there are screen protectors available that can help with the "stylus feel" to give more of a paper like texture. You might find that helpful for your overall experience. I just ordered my Libra Color, so I do not have a recommendation yet. :) Also, concerning build quality, one of the points that sold me on this Kobo is that they have partnered with IFixIt to make these devices user repairable/update-able! You will be able to buy kits to replace the battery, screen, or motherboard which will be supported with an in depth video on how to make the repair. With that kind of open access, these devices will last longer than anything that Amazon puts out at any price and will help keep mountains of e-waste produced out of landfills and dump sites.

Salam, Good review. Unfortunately, none of these devices support Arabic. Additionally, the other Freewrite models are too expensive for me, and I have concerns about shipping to Jordan and the potential issues with returning or repairing the device if it breaks down. Therefore, I have an idea for a customised set-up that I am still working on: an Android 10.1-inch tablet with a suitable keyboard and selected applications focused on writing and translation only. As a translator, such a device would be portable and useful for short, easy, and non-demanding writing and translation tasks. I wanted to share this idea with others in the hope that it might benefit them as well.

The kindle scribe is black and white only, so a better comparison would be the Boox Note Air 3. Based on other reviews I've watched the Air 3C is significantly slower than the Air 3 in side-by-side tests. For whatever reason the addition of the color layer slows it down. So... do another comparison with the Air 3 and it will be more valuable as a real comparison.

To Canadians, Kindle is a non starter. No Overdrive/Libby to borrow books from your local library. Also Bluetooth is disabled on Canadian Kindles so audiobooks are out of the question. With these two MASSIVE limitations, about the only positive thing you can say about Canadian Kindles is that they can put letters and words on the screen. Kobo allows for Libby and audio books. I use my Kobo daily, and my sad old pathetic Kindle resides at the back of a drawer. I cannot for the life of me understand why Amazon Kindle hates Canadians as much as they do.

I got it about two weeks ago and everything was fine! Now for a few days it's been giving me this problem: the page doesn't update (see video) everything remains superimposed! ok it's an EINK but the first few days I used it without ghost image problems and it's ULTRAFAST.. Furthermore the update as you can see from the video seems weak! Defective unit? software problem? meh! I liked it so much that I even left a positive review on Amazon. I got rid of my cell phone and used it like an Android mainly as you can see! I put everything into it! then the screen started acting like this.. now I can return it on amazon but I'm sorry! I think they're all the same at this point! maybe if used only as a book reader ok but at this point I use the kindle paperwhite (which has never given me these severe ghosting problems)... see video: th-cam.com/video/1BPdbTZ2rro/w-d-xo.html

Yes, to write, the feeling is great, and very functional, but it is way too heavy to use it as an ereader. Your hands will ache after a few minutes of holding it. Hi! A lot of people comment about how plastic it feels, but if you look into it thats what amazing about it. It's made of 100% recycled plastic and 10% of that is made from plastic that washes up on the beach. So it's proudly plastic :) I allways have my kobo in a case and even have a screen protector. It's 11 years old now and still look great... which is frustrating because I would love the new colour one;) Thanks for a great video...😀

I have a Hemingwrite that I love. But I noticed recently just how much my editing brain turns on when I see a mistyped word. My eyes travel up the screen and I feel my creative brain turn off. I just bought the Alpha, as nothing in your video or from what I've seen in reviews turned me off from the device. The screen is intentionally small to make editing impossible, so that hopefully you can stay in the writing flow state instead of questioning everything you've ever written (which is where my mind goes once that editing side kicks on). I bought a customized Alpha Neo (painted a nice, light gray) this year during Nanowrimo, even though I already had one in its original color, because while the Neos are great machines, they aren't very pleasing to the eye. That Neo2 logo beneath the screen drives me nuts (I know, that's a weird me problem). I bought it because so many people had been complaining about the Alpha initially. But after enough research and a firmware update from Astrohaus, I think a lot of people are really enjoying the device as well. I think for a drafting device that is meant to discourage editing and is easily transportable, the Alpha hits the mark. I think it will be more comfortable as a lap device than the Neos, too. Over time, I've come to realize that the Neos aren't comfortable for me to type on unless I'm sitting at a desk, and since my day job requires me to sit at a desk for 9 hours, writing at one has quickly lost its appeal. Of course I still have to actually use the Alpha, but after my experience with losing focus on the Hemingwrite at times, and very often when I'm writing on my laptop, I'm really excited to try drafting on a screen that doesn't allow me to get lost in the weeds of editing.

Excellent comparison. I owned quite a few Neos. I loved them. When a thought came to me, I just took mine out at the moment and began writing. They eventually all broke down. They were all old and refurbished machines. When Freewrite Alpha came out, I was initially excited. However, on Freewrite’s videos, I noticed what you pointed out in your review, and did not buy one. My wife surprised me and gifted me a Traveler a couple of years ago. It’s all right but, to put it nicely, it’s no Neo. It’s hard to be spontaneous with it. Again, thank you for a great comparative review.

    • @WritersLike
      @WritersLike หลายเดือนก่อน

Kobo has its own proprietary retail storefront just like Amazon or B&N. You can buy books from within the device, the app, or through their web site, or check them out from library if the library you have attached to your device has the book in their catalog. Sideloading is easy - there's a desktop sync option (help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017478174-Sync-your-Kobo-eReader-with-Kobo-Desktop), or you can connect your google drive or dropbox to the device and import things that way. BUT ya can't get your Kindle books on Kobo. That's true for every single reading device that isn't a Kindle, unless you break the DRM (digital rights management) through some hack, a thing I've never bothered with but lots of people do.

Don’t feel pressured to show your face. Showing and moving around the product is what I personally want to see in a tech review. It’s frustrating when many tech reviews are showing mostly their face as they talk or these fancy cool shots. I like more raw unedited reviews where someone is using the product naturally as if I’d be using it and seeing what those angles look like.
