We purchased an Amazon flute for my daughter when she started band in 6th grade 2017. Fast forward to today 6 years later it finally gave out. We did maintenance on it after each marching season and it even took her to 1st chair district band. She named it Eleanor. So Eleanor is retired now.

I purchased a glory flute for my daughter when she first started playing the flute in fourth grade she’s now a junior in high school, and she’s been using the same glory flute. Today one of her bandmates dropped it and I have to replace it only because of the drop. It really was a great flute and all of her band teachers have always been shocked at the sound quality.

I played years ago, and thinking of getting one. Was in a high school
band and used their instruments. A relative gave me one on loan, which I used for over a decade, but eventually wanted it back for another family member. I had the pads replaced and had an electric pickup
Which I included when I returned it to the owner. This flute in your video would be occasional instrument to take out to play. My wife likes to sing, so this would be a way to include myself in that interest.
    Great review.

13:48 - It sounds kind of like an oboe.
16:40 - I can see where Katie Flute got her intro music now.

I like that you think I sounded like an oboe! Godard Allegretto is a very standard piece and you can find the free sheet music here: imslp.org/wiki/Suite_de_trois_morceaux%2C_Op.116_(Godard%2C_Benjamin)
I also highly recommend the other two movements of this suite. 🎶😍

Or just going to your pawn shop. Excellent review. I played the flute when I was a kid and want to try it out again after playing the guitar for several years. I now think I will get a used one to try out. If it doesn’t work for me, I’ll just donate it to my local middle school.

I was looking to pick up a new instrument at the beginning of quarantine and ended up picking one of these up and learned the basics on it. It worked pretty well honestly, though I upgraded after a few months and found it much easier to play in the upper register. For the price, if you have realistic expectations about what you're getting, I think these are pretty neat.

Yeah, I started playing on a Glory flute in 4th grade in the 2019-2020 year, when covid struck. And then i went back in 6th grade, so i played it for 2 years. I upgraded to a Yamaha student model flute, and i wasn’t really able to get to the upper register, which my yamaha does.

Our daughter decided she wanted to be in band for 6th grade. She's never played an instrument, and went for a fitting and evaluation and decided on the flute. We purchased this Glory flute before we decide to rent to own a more (much more!) expensive instrument. It should arrive tomorrow. Thank you SO much for this detailed review! This is proof that mass production is the king of just about everything we buy and own. Now one can buy the best and most costly of anything, some things as with most things are over priced. I don't see with flutes how they need to be more than 1k for a good one. There is a jazz flute player in my area here in Detroit and she is amazing along with being a great sheet music reader of any style she said "I never pay more than $1700.00 for a flute even though I can afford to.

Please post the second part of this series. I’m considering a Mendini Cecilio as a practice instrument. I have my original silver flute that’s 52 years old. I haven’t played in 30 years so before I invest big $$$ in reconditioning, I’d like to see how well I still play and if I want to work on building my skills again. After 25 years of not really playing my flute much (after seven years of playing it), I decided to just have some fun as well. I picked up four Artley flutes from the Elkhart time period (mid 50's through the mid 60's for these), and I'm going to play with them a bit, then see what it takes to re-pad. (If I'm successful with more than one, I'll donate them to a school).
Frankly, that Glory flute doesn't sound any worse than the average 1980's Gemeinhardt flute. I don't want to think about the repair costs. Still, with the cost of rentals, even if you _replaced_ it every six months, you might be ahead of the game.

Thank you for the great review and detailed information. I will watch your next video on the Mendini flute. In school I played a Yamaha - I loved it and I remember it having a rich warm and soulful sound and tone. I have to say that this one did not sound like that - although it was good - probably because of your skill which pushed it somewhat. I hope to find out what is the least I would need to spend in order to obtain a rich tone a lay person could still be proud of. ha.!

Good review. One guy on the internet said to people you have to pay a $500+ to buy your first flute. I totally disagree with him. Not only is it expensive esp. if you do not stick with it, its a waste of money. I never bought very expensive instruments and they have stood the test of time, i have piano, guitar, drums, trumpet and now the a flute. Of course at the start of musical learning i got a really cheap guitar, wrong size and just a bad guitar £30 any one. It looks good on the wall the though. I then got a C40 classical guitar for £85 over 11 years ago which is worth £124 now. The guitar was and is brilliant and i still have it. i did get an encore electric guitar set which is ok to start with. I eventally got an epiphone guitar which looks great, poor finish, damn neck heavy. What that means the guitar will drop down from the guitar head stock as your trying to play it. I had to varnish the guitar to keep the finish. The electronics were great though but not the tuners.
I then got ibnez grgr221pa-aqb gio guitar. Damn thats a long name. This is the best guitar ever had even (though i did the like the fender squire cheap knock off in red). I have a yammaha accoustic which i bought off ebay and that is a fantastic guitar, plus a12 string guitar that guitar is great, lovely low action and nice sound. Also i have a gear4u piano which is fantastic for the price. The drums were cheap but with a good drum speaker it sounds great. All are basic instruments along with my student Bb trumpet. The problem with brass trumpets you have to keep oiling them or the valves get stuck or rub- and they dent easy ( did that to my trumpet grr). I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy my instruments and my kids get to use them if they wanted. Oh i have ukeleles too which my son loves.

@@LanceSuzuki theres also the part that students in something like a marching band typicaly don't want to use their nice horn (in this case a flute) so maybe a Glory flute might be a great marching flute. Marching bands typicaly wear gloves for marching, and are most common in white (explains the color). They are also wearing gloves to protect the outside of the instrument from all that sweat and dirt on their hands, which especially comes out when one is running around a football field or doing a parade in the hot sun. From all the videos of "cheap" instruments the outside of these instruments aren't very good at keeping their laquer or coating, so the gloves prevent it from fading as well. I just thought i would add onto what Thomas said. Great video too

    • @LanceSuzuki
      @LanceSuzuki  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Curt,
It's hard to say without seeing the flute. However, my first guess would be that the Low C-C# connection might be off. Unfortunately, this is one of the connections without a screw adjustment. It is not easy to adjust without taking the footjoint apart, so definitely best left to a pro technician. Sometimes if you press on both the C# paddle and C roller (rather than just the roller) it can make this better. Good luck!

    • @LanceSuzuki

Short answer...yes. Closed holes are generally easier to learn on for beginners as they figure out where the fingers go. However, open holes dramatically improve the sound of the flute. As a compromise, I ask my beginner students to purchase open hole flutes with plugs.

my first teacher told me to buy a $200usd flute. It is fine at first half year, after that i cannot play lower c d e f , and very hard to play any note. I thought it is my problem because I was a beginner at that time and it sometime works. this situation lasted a month and my second teacher (the first teacher is a really bad teacher she teach one page each lesson and play smartphone at the rest of time) told me to buy a new flute (~$800) and all problem is solved. using a cheap flute is not only waste of money, and also waste of time, and also waste of the lesson fee ($38 each lesson, $38*4...). at that time I thought i am not able to play good sound even though I have pay much effort and time to practice and I almost give up..

In the less-than-$100 category, I think either this flute (Glory) or the Mendini Closed Hole are good choices. You can see a direct comparison in Part 3 of this series. If you have a little more to spend, I recommend checking out student flutes from shops such as FluteWorld, Flute Center of New York and Carolyn Nussbaum.
