With a lot of instruments constructed by modern makers the difference between cheap and high quality is only really noticeable for the performer. A high quality instrument will have better "action" on moving components, making it very subtly easier to accomplish what they need to accomplish. And that won't necessarily be noticeable by the audience- but it will be very noticeable to the performers. Pianos are like that, as are many brass instruments. With that said, I mean, I'm in a different section of the orchestra but my impression on this instrument is that I would have zero regrets buying one for a child or for an adult who was just starting out. Then they can go get a more expensive instrument once they're good enough at it to detect the differences on their own.
i think the most notable would be percussion, especially large drums. Cheap drums sound like kids toys whereas A LOT of cheap instruments can be passable in the right hands. However, the biggest difference between cheap and higher quality instruments in the modern manufacturing age has to do with ease of play-ability and durability which are things only the performer would notice. The audience may not notice much of a difference, but the performers may be working 50% harder to achieve the same results with their cheaper instrumentation.

Same. I actually genuinely dislike the higher pitched noises a flute makes, so I have always avoided the instrument. Yet here I am, watching the entire video :D Maybe it's just that listening to experts, regardless of the area of expertise, is nice? Dunno. Still, good video :)
Every time I'm on TH-cam I'm like that. Search a few videos that I want. Then see another interesting video on a different topic and on and on. By the time I'm done I can't remember what I was original watching.

For $70, i think it's an awesome flute!! The sound was good, all the accessories, this flute could be the difference between a child who never has a musical experience & one who starts modestly, but develops a lifelong love of music.
Absolutely what I was thinking! I turned out to be one of those kids who never developed the musical talent that my Dad has, or that my baby sister developed because I only had old, worn out instruments to try to learn on that could not produce a clean sound even if played properly (I had my Grandfathers Clarinet that had been kept in an attic for 25 years! And a hand-me-down Guitar with a warped neck.) My parents couldn't afford new(er) instruments (or lessons for that matter) so my desire quickly waned. Now I'm a middle-aged adult with far too many hobbies and too little time to spend learning to play music. The best time to learn is as a youth!
@@taotuhao5969 - Never too late, but definitely easier to do as a child who has more time available to devote to learning an practicing, and less of life's other demands to get in the way.
@Ormus Lightbringer - I disagree. The sound may not be the purest, but it is possible to play a clean note, and it's not outragiously expensive for a parent to purchase. Unlike trying to produce a clean note from a guitar with a warped neck that constantly buzzes on nearby frets, or a clarinet with leaking seals and pads.
David Lodge HAHA! I arrived here via Pearl drumkit reviews and ended up watching the whole thing too, completely fascinated. I had no idea just how cool a flute could be. I guess I need to listen to a lot more Classical music and Jethro Tull.
Also a drummer, but I was watching medical school and residency videos, no clue how I landed here.. I’m not sure why I have been watching Doctors TH-cam channels either, that’s another conversation all it’s own! Lol
I love that the flute sounds as good as it does for so low a price. Music education is vital not just for music appreciation, but because it stimulates so many other types of learning. At that price, it would be difficult to deny any child at least some music education. Bravo, Eastar; and bravo, The Flute Channel!
Today I learned: There are differences between cheap/pro flutes and that for the umpteenth time TH-cam still has no idea how to recommend me things based on my actual interests yet I keep clicking confusing the AI even more. Such an interesting day, thanks flute people :)
What I learned today (or rather was reminded of) is that I hate snobs of any kind - be it watches, cars, guns, or flutes. They are the most off-putting type of people on the planet.
After 20 years of dreaming of being able to play the flute, I finally found the courage to start learning how to read sheet music and was thinking of buying an affordable flute on Amazon so I could dip my toes into the wonderful world of being a flautist. I was so discouraged when I saw so many comments about how horrible quality instruments they were, that I was being scammed, and I should have waited and saved up a long time more to buy a 600 dollar student flute. Money I didn't have. But I can honestly say this video really encouraged me to just go for it. It might not be the best quality flute, but it doesn't mean I can't use it to practice the basics and fingerings until I can afford a good flute! My flute comes today! Here's to begining my flute journey! 🥂

It can be the same thing with photography (and I am not saying you are like this, don't get me wrong): you can have a really expensive camera but if you don't understand the settings it's not going to make you a good photographer. (Unfortunately I know a couple of people who argument "I have a really expensive camera and one of the most expensive lenses so I am a professional photographer".)
I want to try I haven’t played any instruments since I graduated hs two years ago I played clarinet violin viola and bass but I want to try to pick up the clarinet and flute. I think I can try since I basically learn clarinet by myself 😒 (my teacher was a shitty one)

@chubbybunny Rivera all kinds of instruments are expensive the more professional higher the price. Depends on the maker and the materials they use. When we just play for fun it’s fine but for the professional musicians they work hard to keep their gear in top shape. My dad’s professional Pipa was over $50,000 and not too expensive as he put it? 😅
I’m quite shocked at how good of quality this flute is. It looks like a perfect starter flute for students, or a good practice flute in case you feel nervous having your professional flute.
bear in mind, this is the review copy they are sending out to a youtuber. They are going to make sure it works _really_ well. The one you buy on amazon will most likely be a much, _much_ worse quality than what is shown here. It's a common marketing strategy these types of companies pull, don't be fooled. Videos like this are fun to watch, but you should never use them as an actual indication of what the product will actually be like. This is not a real review, it's entertainment.
I am So amused by how many people (myself included) Came here by accident and stayed to the end... If my kids ever want to play the flute, at least I know the Amazon one is decent for a starter.
Decent for starter only if you are able to adjust it in the right way... That should be an explicit advise for futur customers. If not, you're just good to go on a store and pay to adjust it for you.
If you kids ever want to play flute barrow from the school first. and if they stick with it for a year or two invest in a good flute. Your kids will be more grateful. #schoolflutenightmares
Curious, but did it come from Glory? That is what I have, the cheap version. Same kind of case, and same packaging. I believe the gloves are to wear why playing so that the flute doesnt get any smudges in it :-)
I did, I used to have a gorgeous Mateki flute and Zentner piccolo for college and when I was in the US Army Bands (1st Inf DIV Band Ft Riley, KS; 399th Army Band Ft Leonard Wood, MO; and I Corps Band Ft Lewis’s, WA). I was stupid and I sold them. Several years later, I decided that I wanted to start to play again and bought a $80.00 special from EBay... either it’s completely unplayable or I am REALLY out of practice!!!
As someone who started in music on an $80 piano and a guitar that was a $12.95 Valu-Mart 15 minute microphone special, I certainly appreciate the utility of these “modestly priced” instruments. At the same time, my son, a band teacher, can tell scores of horror stories of the pain of super-cheap horns: unscrew a trumpet valve cap and it won’t screw back on-at all… try to repair a broken weld and melt a hole in the body because the metal is softer than solder. They were quite correct in calling them “single-use” instruments. Still waiting for that $75 oboe…
@@Angel-ou1fr Good starter ones, yes. I was lucky and got mine used and from someone who wasn't interested in playing it anymore so I didn't pay that much. Original price still was 12 to 13 grand. But the general rule is that instruments don't really have an upper price limit, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone has an 100k+ bassoon

My cheapy beginner flute cost about $300 so for $70 i was expecting this to be made of plastic! that’s crazy, and even the accessories are great! This flute looks perfect for kids and/or marching. If any of my future kids pick up flute I could see myself starting them on this flute before letting them inherit my better mid-range flute during HS
I suppose it's asking too much, but I was expecting to hear a technical discussion of what makes an excellent instrument sound better than one that is mediocre. I can tell by her technique and playing that she is an excellent musician, but what I cannot tell, because my ears are not practiced, is what the real differences were between the two instruments. Tone, clarity of sound, how the keys responded to her fingering...from an expert's perspective.
Yes, I was thinking it would be more construction, materials, etc. Also, they were able to adjust it, but kids wouldn't, so that trip to the local store would cost more than the flute, and you can get a decent yamaha flute for $200 bucks from a store and they'll include the adjustments....

The primary reason is that most Chinese parents are extremely keen for their children to be good musicians with many starting lessons at a very young age, so the manufacturers of musical instruments for tuition are expected to maintain high standards!
Well, if her "normal" flute cost $20,000.00---as eluded to by another one of The Flute Channel videos---I really couldn't tell much difference between the two. I would definitely get the Eastar flute if I was a beginner.
It’s probably about durability and serviceable parts. Also, response. I know sporting goods, and though things look the same and seem the same to beginners, elite users need that durability and serviceability. It’s occasional use vs industrial machinery.

A mate of mine hated his guitar and amp, and was working hard to get a really decent bit of kit to replace it - then a very good player tried it out and it sounded amazing... my mate is saving his money for something else now, he knows it isn't his kit that needs attention!
True, to a point. A great musician with a sub-par instrument will never reach their full potential. Just as a great instrument with a sub-par player never will.

You know, when you played the $70 amazon flute next to your regular flute I couldn't hear much of a difference. You should get a few flute players together, put a blind fold on them, and see if they can spot the difference and pick out the $70 dollar flute from the other one.
I bet they'd be able to tell the difference in how it feels while playing. A good player can make a good sound on a cheap instrument, but in my experience (which, granted, is on clarinet), when you're used to the better instrument, it can feel almost like you're fighting against the cheap one. There might not be a huge difference in sound, but there should be a difference in how responsive and enjoyable the instrument is to play.
The low notes were flat and the high notes were sharp. That’s a pretty big flaw by itself. Also it came completely out of adjustment. This is not something a beginner can do themselves and would probably take a woodwind repair person 45-60min to do. So that’s an extra AU$120 to make it playable. If you watch her other videos she tests student flutes vs “rolls Royce” flutes and even though they sound similar when a pro is playing them, everything is much easier to do on a very good instrument (keeping intonation as well as just making it sound beautiful).
We did! The feel was completely different and we mention this in other videos as well. The amount of effort needed to make it sound as good is quite massive.
true - a professional player can made any instrument sound good. But read my comments above. There was a huge difference in the depth of tone/complexity of the sound, although that isn't such a big deal for a student. In saying that, I ask all my students to listen to their tone, and most of them can get a sound within 6 months that would outgrow that instruments capabilities. (Or the instrument would limit their progress).

Lana Gold where I live, band and sometimes orchestra, are offered through the public schools.... only costs to parents are the instruments and lesson books. We rented one daughter’s oboe from the school for something like $40/year. Two flutes and a cornet were bought through a rent to own program from regional music stores
@@tanya5322 same here. but i couldn't use my personal experiences as evidence. they we're saying that instruments cost hundreds of dollars and didn't believe that you could find something cheaper or that a cheaper instrument would be a toy. my first instrument was a second (or third, possibly fourth) generation Bundy alto bought for less than a hundred bucks at a pawn shop, played for years on that thing, until i upgraded to a yahmaha custom. that got me into the wind ensemble in college.
I found a $15000 all white gold flute in a trash dump near Berklee Music School. It needs major repair. And by the numbers I found out it was reported stolen in 2005. Wonder where it's been all this time.
I started on TH-cam today looking up a video on how to replace the filter in my refrigerator.. 2 hours later, ending up on the Flute Channel impressed on what you can get for 70 bucks... smh
True, but just like any other tool, a cheap tool will get you going, but if you get serious you will need to upgrade. You don't see professional mechanics using Harbor Freight tools for instance. But totally fine for occasional use in the tool shed.
To a degree. It's almost like the idea of the eq profile of any speaker... some are enhanced to accentuate certain acoustic profiles making one sound inherently better. Not to mention feel of the instrument weight quality of construction etc. You don't see a prodigy using a starter instrument for a reason.

@@ababy1019 yup. In drum corps, we always wore gloves whenever we held and/or played our horns (which could be up to 12 hours a day during rehearsal camps) to keep the lacquer from getting too much skin oil and sweat which can cause corrosion.
I would have to say that for most amateur situations, that flute would pass just fine. It also seems like a good first flute. My first flute was plastic.
Yes as long as it does not cause frustration. You see, Amelie has masterful technique ... the real proof of how good this instrument would be for a novice player is for a novice player to try playing it. Can it be played successfully by a beginner or is it frustrating to play. If their efforts do not produce a satisfying sound then enjoyment will soon evaporate and so will their motivation to continue
If the channel owners read this, please do the same video but with beginning flute players instead of professionals. This just gives the impression that it’s perfectly OK to buy these crap Instrument Shaped Objects to people who don’t know better. These products are making life for band directors miserable and you just irresponsibly exacerbated that difficulty. Shame.

(Back in middle school) I remember this younger girl in my flute section who said she couldn't play HER flute. That something was "wrong with it." I took it and played fine. She was so surprised/embarrassed, but I told her she needed practice. A lot of times it's just the musician. It's all practice and dedication 💗🙌

I have no idea why I even wanted to watch this but I clicked on it and I also watched until the end. LOL

My wife bought me a brand new acoustic bass guitar off of Amazon 3 years ago for $80 and I still love it! I'm no musician, but I love playing and I love learning. Never be ashamed of buying a cheap instrument when you are starting out. There were moments where I could tell no difference between those flutes. It comes down to the player. Thanks for posting. 😁

If you clean your instrument regularly you shouldn't have a problem... I played for over 5 years and I never saw any "corrosion" and we also didn't use gloves.
The gloves are for uniformity. Not for keeping the flute clean. It is VERY difficult to keep ahold of a flute while wearing gloves. And VERY difficult to form a seal on an open holed flute while wearing gloves. Most flutes actually cut the fingers off. Perhaps they might be worn by someone who handles flutes in a way that wasn’t playing, for example selling or appraising. But I don’t think that many would wear the gloves while playing.
@@Osprey1994 I got one in 6th grade from our repair guy he exchanged out one we bought because the one we bought was badly damaged and didnt know it(got it from a pawn shop) but the one he gave me it was lightly used but still in excellent condition and even over 10 years later its still in excellent condition and I played almost daily for 6+ yrs and of all the ones which I have used several due to mine periodically going into repairs for pads and such and of all I have played that one flute had been the best of them all for ease of use and sound quality and it was a Yamaha brand flute it's so pure sounding that you could use it as a professional flute

I am trying to teach myself to play the harmonica. My best guess is that the NSA heard me practicing and decided to let me know I should try another instrument. Amazon has a couple thousand cheap flutes sitting in the Ruskin fulfillment center, so they submitted a request to TH-cam for some targeted advertising. Next thing I know, I'm subscribed to the flute channel and a flute is on my wish list. Thanks, Big Brother.
The take-away that you are missing here is that it would be an affordable entry level flute for a younger child taking a step into music and wanting to play a flute.
Michael Wenman they had such a hard time admitting that it was a good flute for the price, something around 400$ is the "affordable" range for them, they went all the way nitpicking on that flute.
I have had students buy these They were a waste of money. They were more hassle than they were worth. So no the student couldn’t play. And I know of too many students who quit over something that was no more than the instrument being poor quality. One student came to me she had been learning for 4 years.. no progress. I told her to upgrade. She got the cheapest Jupiter flute.. and suddenly she sounds amazing and starting to progress really well. All because of the instrument quality
They gave the instrument more credit than I would have. The amount of adjustments they needed to do? Could you do that when a flute arrives at your house? No most students would say “the flute is too hard”. And quit
As a band teacher, I fully disagree. There were too many adjustments that had to be made for it to even be playable for the average student. The first thing that would happen is that the band director would spend half the class trying to fix it while trying to teach. The next week, half of the screws will have come loose again and they'll have to keep doing it. Eventually, the student is embarrassed to ask about it and will just try to deal with it or tighten the screws themself. The flute will sound worse and worse and they will be miserable and eventually quit. I've had students come in with cheap instruments before. They break down fast and are not worth it. In the video, they make a big deal about the accessories that come with it that their school flutes didn't have. One thing I can guarantee is that the instruments in my district all work, even though the cases might be beat up and the students need to provide their own cleaning supplies. If you have the option, use a school instrument and save up for a better flute.
That sounds like a really good starter flute. You don't know if your kid will actually stick with learning flute but you want to encourage them so you get one. This one has everything to care for your flute. For the price it doesn't matter if a kid quits or accidentally damages it.
If you want your own flute, this one seems actually ok. Especially for a beginner. BUT the screws will need to be adjusted so it works best and once the pads go bad you might as well buy a new flute because repadding will cost minimum $150, probably more
I read an article that the difference between different metals is not really that significant. Any difference we hear here is because we are hearing the flutes played one right after another. If she just took the cheap flute on stage and played it, no one would likely know she was playing a cheap flute. So, cheap flutes can sound just fine, but they are not as well made so they won't last with heavy use and aren't worth repairing. They are good for trying out the instrument, the casual player, or a cheap backup.
That's cause she sounds the same on all the flutes she plays. I watched another video where she played on a 20k flute and it sounded almost the same. You can hear the difference and the way the air and the mechanism act together. I think it's more about he quality of the user rather than the flutes themselves. A high end flute will respond better, and have a clearer, crisper sound.
In my experience the sound difference is only noticeable to a trained ear. When it’s cheap it usually doesn’t feel as good to play and has no longevity compared to an expensive instrument. However, at some point I feel like once you’ve reached a certain level of expensive, the quality is capped and there is no difference. The flute sounds so pretty regardless of price!
The Amazon flute didn't sound bad, all things considered. There's a lot more 'air' noise with it, especially on the lower notes, but man, this would be a great starter instrument.
My thought was you could play the flute without leaving fingerprints and still send it back un blemished etc... ie careful handling. Although the marching band theory never occurred to me I guess it'S possible?? .

I just got that same $70 flute for my daughter to learn on. I figured that would be the best for now and as she gets older and if she sticks with it then get a better one.
You know, Jon, I had the same impression. She may be too good for demonstrating the quality of this flute for most of us. I could notice a difference, but not one that couldn't be overcome. Honestly, I could see no reason to not recommend this as a student flute, even at only $70. I can't imagine it would hold up well on more complex pieces, but I was surprised at the sound quality.
To be fair, I'm not implying just any run of the mill stapler....It would need to be a pretty high end stapler - something like a top of the line Swingline 747.
It might be not a great instrument, but it's fairly OK to start playing ... so nobody needs to be blocked from playing flute because the instrument is not affordable. I appreciate that!
Have you heard the argument that some beginners are discouraged by badly-made instruments because of difficulty in tone production? My first clarinet was a chore to play and thankfully I continued on, because when I got a new (quality) one, the heavens opened. I think it's great if instruments are cheap and play well, though.

I also randomly came here, but her professional flute has a much smoother sound than the amazon flute, and she can play her own flute seemingly effortlessly. She has to work much harder with the Amazon flute (especially with breathing), but she can still make it work. I guess that’s all you need as a beginner.

The cheap flute sounds good to me, cheap is relative, to someone who has nothing this would be a miracle. Actually it made me feel good when she played!
My son plays trumpet, flugel, and mellophone.... when it came to finding a mouthpiece size that was RIGHT for him I had absolutely no problem buying him the $10-15 Bach clones until we found the right one for him. I mean, they are cheaply made and the finish comes off , but they were true to size (I play as well) and if it got lost on the field, dropped on concrete, etc it was no big loss.

My sister had the habit of starting something and then quitting a month or two later once she got bored, so to shell out a couple hundred dollars to not even know if they will play for over a couple months seems wasteful, however, if they bought this flute and she quit it would not be that big of a waste of money. And if she did enjoy playing the flute and stuck with it they probably would upgrade her to a more expensive one.
Haha. I can't afford a professional flute like you. However, it's how you play it; your connection with the instrument. Many people CAN'T afford the flutes which you both play, but money should NEVER be a hindrance for learning. Please keep in mind, we don't have money for $600 flutes. Its okay for learning, but it isn't great. Most instruments from amazon that cost less than $100 tend to not last long if they aren't taken care of properly. Most of these instruments are targeted for younger kids that start in elementary/primary school and even then most band teachers will suggest to stay away from these intrents because they break very easily and they aren't in tune either. You are right about the musician wielding the instrument. Depending who plays the instrument, they can make any of them sound good.

I watched the video as a guitarist, and it seemed like you are more down to earth when it comes to price/value ratio. I love it when a talented musician plays a cheap instrument and she doesn't hate it cause its cheap. Guitarists I know are often snobbish when it comes to gear, then they play punk rock on it. This was refreshing!
You're so right. The genre based on everything being grungy and cheap and careless and the dudes playing on a $5,000 gibson that he wont let anyone else touch. It's so funny to me
this won't be aimed at schools. these flutes can't be serviced economically when they're damaged. Schools need instruments that can be maintained for many years of service.
@@jsimiles TBH, I could see recommending a flute like this JUST for marching band just because you don't need anything more then a student flute. And for the cost. Does beat some damage repairs for marching with instruments alone. But again, never would recommend for say concert band.
So I’m a percussionist, and today on Christmas, I received this flute and I LOVE it! I’ve been practicing it today, and Im so excited to keep practicing and it’s very fun!
I think this is a fantastic starter flute. Grade school level, beginners. And, if the child loses it, then your not out a whole lot. Just buy another. And, if the child progresses into their learning. A new one of higher quality would make a great holiday or b-day gift. I always wondered about these flutes. Being a flutist myself.
As an experiment I would like to see a whole orchestra playing cheap instruments like this and see if anybody noticed....

With a lot of instruments constructed by modern makers the difference between cheap and high quality is only really noticeable for the performer. A high quality instrument will have better "action" on moving components, making it very subtly easier to accomplish what they need to accomplish. And that won't necessarily be noticeable by the audience- but it will be very noticeable to the performers.
Pianos are like that, as are many brass instruments.
With that said, I mean, I'm in a different section of the orchestra but my impression on this instrument is that I would have zero regrets buying one for a child or for an adult who was just starting out. Then they can go get a more expensive instrument once they're good enough at it to detect the differences on their own.

i think the most notable would be percussion, especially large drums. Cheap drums sound like kids toys whereas A LOT of cheap instruments can be passable in the right hands. However, the biggest difference between cheap and higher quality instruments in the modern manufacturing age has to do with ease of play-ability and durability which are things only the performer would notice. The audience may not notice much of a difference, but the performers may be working 50% harder to achieve the same results with their cheaper instrumentation.
A good musician can make a bad instrument sound good and a bad musician can make a good instrument sound bad.

For $70, i think it's an awesome flute!! The sound was good, all the accessories, this flute could be the difference between a child who never has a musical experience & one who starts modestly, but develops a lifelong love of music.
Absolutely what I was thinking! I turned out to be one of those kids who never developed the musical talent that my Dad has, or that my baby sister developed because I only had old, worn out instruments to try to learn on that could not produce a clean sound even if played properly (I had my Grandfathers Clarinet that had been kept in an attic for 25 years! And a hand-me-down Guitar with a warped neck.) My parents couldn't afford new(er) instruments (or lessons for that matter) so my desire quickly waned. Now I'm a middle-aged adult with far too many hobbies and too little time to spend learning to play music. The best time to learn is as a youth!

@Ormus Lightbringer - I disagree. The sound may not be the purest, but it is possible to play a clean note, and it's not outragiously expensive for a parent to purchase. Unlike trying to produce a clean note from a guitar with a warped neck that constantly buzzes on nearby frets, or a clarinet with leaking seals and pads.

Today I learned: I can't tell the difference between a cheap flute and an expensive one.
What I learned today (or rather was reminded of) is that I hate snobs of any kind - be it watches, cars, guns, or flutes. They are the most off-putting type of people on the planet.
After 20 years of dreaming of being able to play the flute, I finally found the courage to start learning how to read sheet music and was thinking of buying an affordable flute on Amazon so I could dip my toes into the wonderful world of being a flautist.
I was so discouraged when I saw so many comments about how horrible quality instruments they were, that I was being scammed, and I should have waited and saved up a long time more to buy a 600 dollar student flute. Money I didn't have.
But I can honestly say this video really encouraged me to just go for it. It might not be the best quality flute, but it doesn't mean I can't use it to practice the basics and fingerings until I can afford a good flute!
My flute comes today! Here's to begining my flute journey! 🥂

When we just play for fun it’s fine but for the professional musicians they work hard to keep their gear in top shape. My dad’s professional Pipa was over $50,000 and not too expensive as he put it? 😅

I’m quite shocked at how good of quality this flute is. It looks like a perfect starter flute for students, or a good practice flute in case you feel nervous having your professional flute.
bear in mind, this is the review copy they are sending out to a youtuber. They are going to make sure it works _really_ well. The one you buy on amazon will most likely be a much, _much_ worse quality than what is shown here. It's a common marketing strategy these types of companies pull, don't be fooled.
Videos like this are fun to watch, but you should never use them as an actual indication of what the product will actually be like. This is not a real review, it's entertainment.

Decent for starter only if you are able to adjust it in the right way... That should be an explicit advise for futur customers. If not, you're just good to go on a store and pay to adjust it for you.
If you kids ever want to play flute barrow from the school first. and if they stick with it for a year or two invest in a good flute. Your kids will be more grateful. #schoolflutenightmares

I did, I used to have a gorgeous Mateki flute and Zentner piccolo for college and when I was in the US Army Bands (1st Inf DIV Band Ft Riley, KS; 399th Army Band Ft Leonard Wood, MO; and I Corps Band Ft Lewis’s, WA). I was stupid and I sold them. Several years later, I decided that I wanted to start to play again and bought a $80.00 special from EBay... either it’s completely unplayable or I am REALLY out of practice!!!

As someone who started in music on an $80 piano and a guitar that was a $12.95 Valu-Mart 15 minute microphone special, I certainly appreciate the utility of these “modestly priced” instruments. At the same time, my son, a band teacher, can tell scores of horror stories of the pain of super-cheap horns: unscrew a trumpet valve cap and it won’t screw back on-at all… try to repair a broken weld and melt a hole in the body because the metal is softer than solder. They were quite correct in calling them “single-use” instruments.

I was lucky and got mine used and from someone who wasn't interested in playing it anymore so I didn't pay that much. Original price still was 12 to 13 grand.
But the general rule is that instruments don't really have an upper price limit, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone has an 100k+ bassoon

I'm trying to figure out how I went from LSPDFR (Grand Theft Auto Mod) to a flute channel...
My cheapy beginner flute cost about $300 so for $70 i was expecting this to be made of plastic! that’s crazy, and even the accessories are great! This flute looks perfect for kids and/or marching. If any of my future kids pick up flute I could see myself starting them on this flute before letting them inherit my better mid-range flute during HS
I suppose it's asking too much, but I was expecting to hear a technical discussion of what makes an excellent instrument sound better than one that is mediocre. I can tell by her technique and playing that she is an excellent musician, but what I cannot tell, because my ears are not practiced, is what the real differences were between the two instruments. Tone, clarity of sound, how the keys responded to her fingering...from an expert's perspective.
Yes, I was thinking it would be more construction, materials, etc. Also, they were able to adjust it, but kids wouldn't, so that trip to the local store would cost more than the flute, and you can get a decent yamaha flute for $200 bucks from a store and they'll include the adjustments....

The primary reason is that most Chinese parents are extremely keen for their children to be good musicians with many starting lessons at a very young age, so the manufacturers of musical instruments for tuition are expected to maintain high standards!

A mate of mine hated his guitar and amp, and was working hard to get a really decent bit of kit to replace it - then a very good player tried it out and it sounded amazing... my mate is saving his money for something else now, he knows it isn't his kit that needs attention!

You know, when you played the $70 amazon flute next to your regular flute I couldn't hear much of a difference. You should get a few flute players together, put a blind fold on them, and see if they can spot the difference and pick out the $70 dollar flute from the other one.

I bet they'd be able to tell the difference in how it feels while playing. A good player can make a good sound on a cheap instrument, but in my experience (which, granted, is on clarinet), when you're used to the better instrument, it can feel almost like you're fighting against the cheap one.
There might not be a huge difference in sound, but there should be a difference in how responsive and enjoyable the instrument is to play.
The low notes were flat and the high notes were sharp. That’s a pretty big flaw by itself. Also it came completely out of adjustment. This is not something a beginner can do themselves and would probably take a woodwind repair person 45-60min to do. So that’s an extra AU$120 to make it playable. If you watch her other videos she tests student flutes vs “rolls Royce” flutes and even though they sound similar when a pro is playing them, everything is much easier to do on a very good instrument (keeping intonation as well as just making it sound beautiful).
We did! The feel was completely different and we mention this in other videos as well. The amount of effort needed to make it sound as good is quite massive.
true - a professional player can made any instrument sound good. But read my comments above.
There was a huge difference in the depth of tone/complexity of the sound, although that isn't such a big deal for a student. In saying that, I ask all my students to listen to their tone, and most of them can get a sound within 6 months that would outgrow that instruments capabilities. (Or the instrument would limit their progress).
i used this video to prove to someone that you don't have to be rich to get your kids into music.

Lana Gold where I live, band and sometimes orchestra, are offered through the public schools.... only costs to parents are the instruments and lesson books.
We rented one daughter’s oboe from the school for something like $40/year. Two flutes and a cornet were bought through a rent to own program from regional music stores
@@tanya5322 same here. but i couldn't use my personal experiences as evidence. they we're saying that instruments cost hundreds of dollars and didn't believe that you could find something cheaper or that a cheaper instrument would be a toy. my first instrument was a second (or third, possibly fourth) generation Bundy alto bought for less than a hundred bucks at a pawn shop, played for years on that thing, until i upgraded to a yahmaha custom. that got me into the wind ensemble in college.
where I live it is very limited and what we do have is extremely expensive. I couldn't afford 150$ per person let alone 400$ for my entire family.

True, but just like any other tool, a cheap tool will get you going, but if you get serious you will need to upgrade. You don't see professional mechanics using Harbor Freight tools for instance. But totally fine for occasional use in the tool shed.
To a degree. It's almost like the idea of the eq profile of any speaker... some are enhanced to accentuate certain acoustic profiles making one sound inherently better. Not to mention feel of the instrument weight quality of construction etc. You don't see a prodigy using a starter instrument for a reason.

i played clarinet and we had to cut the fingers off to play hahah they’d get dirty and the fingers would roll up so fast
@@ababy1019 yup. In drum corps, we always wore gloves whenever we held and/or played our horns (which could be up to 12 hours a day during rehearsal camps) to keep the lacquer from getting too much skin oil and sweat which can cause corrosion.
I would have to say that for most amateur situations, that flute would pass just fine. It also seems like a good first flute. My first flute was plastic.

You see, Amelie has masterful technique ... the real proof of how good this instrument would be for a novice player is for a novice player to try playing it. Can it be played successfully by a beginner or is it frustrating to play. If their efforts do not produce a satisfying sound then enjoyment will soon evaporate and so will their motivation to continue
If the channel owners read this, please do the same video but with beginning flute players instead of professionals. This just gives the impression that it’s perfectly OK to buy these crap Instrument Shaped Objects to people who don’t know better. Never be ashamed of buying a cheap instrument when you are starting out.

The gloves r for keeping the sweat and oils from your hands from ckrroding the metal over time a lot of people in band use them

If you clean your instrument regularly you shouldn't have a problem... I played for over 5 years and I never saw any "corrosion" and we also didn't use gloves.
The gloves are for uniformity. Not for keeping the flute clean. It is VERY difficult to keep ahold of a flute while wearing gloves. And VERY difficult to form a seal on an open holed flute while wearing gloves. Most flutes actually cut the fingers off. Perhaps they might be worn by someone who handles flutes in a way that wasn’t playing, for example selling or appraising. But I don’t think that many would wear the gloves while playing.
We wore gloves in marching band and that was it.
@@Osprey1994 I got one in 6th grade from our repair guy he exchanged out one we bought because the one we bought was badly damaged and didnt know it(got it from a pawn shop) but the one he gave me it was lightly used but still in excellent condition and even over 10 years later its still in excellent condition and I played almost daily for 6+ yrs and of all the ones which I have used several due to mine periodically going into repairs for pads and such and of all I have played that one flute had been the best of them all for ease of use and sound quality and it was a Yamaha brand flute it's so pure sounding that you could use it as a professional flute

I am trying to teach myself to play the harmonica. My best guess is that the NSA heard me practicing and decided to let me know I should try another instrument. Amazon has a couple thousand cheap flutes sitting in the Ruskin fulfillment center, so they submitted a request to TH-cam for some targeted advertising. Next thing I know, I'm subscribed to the flute channel and a flute is on my wish list. Thanks, Big Brother.

The take-away that you are missing here is that it would be an affordable entry level flute for a younger child taking a step into music and wanting to play a flute.
Michael Wenman they had such a hard time admitting that it was a good flute for the price, something around 400$ is the "affordable" range for them, they went all the way nitpicking on that flute.

They were a waste of money. They were more hassle than they were worth. So no the student couldn’t play. And I know of too many students who quit over something that was no more than the instrument being poor quality.
One student came to me she had been learning for 4 years.. no progress. I told her to upgrade. She got the cheapest Jupiter flute.. and suddenly she sounds amazing and starting to progress really well. All because of the instrument quality
They gave the instrument more credit than I would have. The amount of adjustments they needed to do? Could you do that when a flute arrives at your house?
No most students would say “the flute is too hard”. And quit
As a band teacher, I fully disagree. There were too many adjustments that had to be made for it to even be playable for the average student. The first thing that would happen is that the band director would spend half the class trying to fix it while trying to teach. The next week, half of the screws will have come loose again and they'll have to keep doing it. Eventually, the student is embarrassed to ask about it and will just try to deal with it or tighten the screws themself. The flute will sound worse and worse and they will be miserable and eventually quit. I've had students come in with cheap instruments before. They break down fast and are not worth it. In the video, they make a big deal about the accessories that come with it that their school flutes didn't have. One thing I can guarantee is that the instruments in my district all work, even though the cases might be beat up and the students need to provide their own cleaning supplies. If you have the option, use a school instrument and save up for a better flute.

That sounds like a really good starter flute. You don't know if your kid will actually stick with learning flute but you want to encourage them so you get one. This one has everything to care for your flute. For the price it doesn't matter if a kid quits or accidentally damages it.

Well, I think the biggest difference is how playable it is? Crappy flutes can really hold back an amateur flutist
If you want your own flute, this one seems actually ok. Especially for a beginner. BUT the screws will need to be adjusted so it works best and once the pads go bad you might as well buy a new flute because repadding will cost minimum $150, probably more
I read an article that the difference between different metals is not really that significant. Any difference we hear here is because we are hearing the flutes played one right after another. If she just took the cheap flute on stage and played it, no one would likely know she was playing a cheap flute. So, cheap flutes can sound just fine, but they are not as well made so they won't last with heavy use and aren't worth repairing. They are good for trying out the instrument, the casual player, or a cheap backup.

That's cause she sounds the same on all the flutes she plays. I watched another video where she played on a 20k flute and it sounded almost the same. You can hear the difference and the way the air and the mechanism act together. I think it's more about he quality of the user rather than the flutes themselves. A high end flute will respond better, and have a clearer, crisper sound.
In my experience the sound difference is only noticeable to a trained ear. When it’s cheap it usually doesn’t feel as good to play and has no longevity compared to an expensive instrument. However, at some point I feel like once you’ve reached a certain level of expensive, the quality is capped and there is no difference. The flute sounds so pretty regardless of price!
The Amazon one seemed to have an airy quality to me, but she still made it sound good.

The Amazon flute didn't sound bad, all things considered. There's a lot more 'air' noise with it, especially on the lower notes, but man, this would be a great starter instrument.

You know, Jon, I had the same impression. She may be too good for demonstrating the quality of this flute for most of us. I could notice a difference, but not one that couldn't be overcome. Honestly, I could see no reason to not recommend this as a student flute, even at only $70. I can't imagine it would hold up well on more complex pieces, but I was surprised at the sound quality.

Have you heard the argument that some beginners are discouraged by badly-made instruments because of difficulty in tone production? My first clarinet was a chore to play and thankfully I continued on, because when I got a new (quality) one, the heavens opened. I think it's great if instruments are cheap and play well, though.

I also randomly came here, but her professional flute has a much smoother sound than the amazon flute, and she can play her own flute seemingly effortlessly. She has to work much harder with the Amazon flute (especially with breathing), but she can still make it work. I guess that’s all you need as a beginner.

The cheap flute sounds good to me, cheap is relative, to someone who has nothing this would be a miracle. Actually it made me feel good when she played!
For a parent on a budget buying a flute for a child that may or may not stay in the band program, I think this would be reasonable purchase.
My son plays trumpet, flugel, and mellophone.... when it came to finding a mouthpiece size that was RIGHT for him I had absolutely no problem buying him the $10-15 Bach clones until we found the right one for him. I mean, they are cheaply made and the finish comes off , but they were true to size (I play as well) and if it got lost on the field, dropped on concrete, etc it was no big loss.

My sister had the habit of starting something and then quitting a month or two later once she got bored, so to shell out a couple hundred dollars to not even know if they will play for over a couple months seems wasteful, however, if they bought this flute and she quit it would not be that big of a waste of money. And if she did enjoy playing the flute and stuck with it they probably would upgrade her to a more expensive one.

Haha. I can't afford a professional flute like you. However, it's how you play it; your connection with the instrument. Many people CAN'T afford the flutes which you both play, but money should NEVER be a hindrance for learning. Please keep in mind, we don't have money for $600 flutes. Thank you for this video.

Its okay for learning, but it isn't great. Most instruments from amazon that cost less than $100 tend to not last long if they aren't taken care of properly. Most of these instruments are targeted for younger kids that start in elementary/primary school and even then most band teachers will suggest to stay away from these intrents because they break very easily and they aren't in tune either. You are right about the musician wielding the instrument. Depending who plays the instrument, they can make any of them sound good.

I watched the video as a guitarist, and it seemed like you are more down to earth when it comes to price/value ratio. I love it when a talented musician plays a cheap instrument and she doesn't hate it cause its cheap. Guitarists I know are often snobbish when it comes to gear, then they play punk rock on it. That flute is aimed toward school kids. Those gloves are part of the uniform i.e. marching band.
The gloves are actually so you do put figure prints on your instruments. (But yes they could technically be used for marching.)
this won't be aimed at schools. these flutes can't be serviced economically when they're damaged. Schools need instruments that can be maintained for many years of service.

I think this is a fantastic starter flute. Grade school level, beginners. And, if the child loses it, then your not out a whole lot. Just buy another. And, if the child progresses into their learning. A new one of higher quality would make a great holiday or b-day gift. I always wondered about these flutes. Being a flutist myself.
This would definitely be good to teach small children to take care of their instrument.
