@@HappyConsoleGamer I had an absolute blast. I'm going to call the video "PRGE 24: Happy Console Gamer LIVE & UNCUT"... Because we talked about video editing and it makes it sort of sound like you're Eddie Murphy.
As an employee (not a manager), We were let know of this not that far in advance and so any stores that were to be become "Retro stores" were tasked with getting a small amount of space ready for the Retro shelves. About the un-priced NES games: i dont understand why they didnt have a tag. But we cant reflectively price items, it should always be the same as the website price, which can change, but even if it does, we change the price at the end of the day. So it doesnt matter.
Well, independent game stores will price games based on condition and completeness. It sounds like they're going for a size fits price regardless of condition.
@@8bitjoystick Yea... this is how Gamestop always prices things unfortunately, it's a "One size fits all" price. So the price is usually a middle ground between loose and CIB.
@@SovettaParmetta well, I have a sneaking suspicion that most of the Wii U, Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games that make up the bulk of their retro sections were actually sitting in a storage locker for the past 15 years or so.
Retro is supplied by what customers are trading in, not necessarily backstock that GS has been holding onto. They recently reopened to "retro" to bring back revenue. That's also why a lot of the DS games don't have their original cases because customers bring them in, in DS game storage cases.
I think the cartridges came from what customers traded in but I think all of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and Wii U is just old backstock that they never sold
I'm not surprised with consoles moving to an all digital future GS has slowly been moving towards being more like a "Spencer's" or "Hot Topic" to stay in the game. The sad thing is that there will come a time when we'll be like "remember when Game Stop sold actual games."
Well I think they're already at that point. It seems like retro games are more of an afterthought for the "retro" Gamestop stores. But what's crazy is people still by physical media. They sell a lot of Nintendo switch cartridges. They could've had newly manufactured retro clone systems for sale, but they didn't, they could've carried Evercade but they didn't. They had enough money to purchase Star Wars action figures and Funko pops to sell, but not enough to actually have retro games to sell.
Back in the day (mid 2000s-early 2010s)- this Sunset Esplanade Gamestop was one of the best game stores in all of Oregon. They always had the best selection of ps2/gamecube generally that era of games. Between that and Tanasbourne Gamestop- I got pretty much my entire ps2 library for next to nothing. It's where I bought my Rule of Rose for 17.99 lol. Sad to see what it has become. Thanks for saving me the trip out there.
@@nrogers3425 well, if you're going to go out there, I would recommend that you go to Tapper's Retro games and toys. That's right down the road and I have a ton of games for you.
Well, I hope that people don't take boxes of retro games to GameStop instead of independent stores. I hope that the independent stores still are able to get stuff to sell. I suspect that the Independent stores probably pay a lot better than GameStop does.
@@8bitjoystick There's a chain where I live called Game X-Change I swear, they have tons of games for every system up through at least PS4/Xbox One/Wii U
GameStop should’ve always kept shelf space for retro games and not dedicate it to toys and other non gaming related stuff. This would’ve also kept a lid on retro game prices, which would’ve prevented all these people getting turned off the hobby as well. Imagine if every GameStop was worth going to due to their unique selection.
I stopped going to gamestop after I tried to buy a New game and they gave me a disc without a case. "Oh it is new, it hasn't been used. There's just no case." Bro. How can you let your standards get so low. (It may have been a DS/Switch cartridge actually. I can't recall. All I know is I didn't pay for it and I left.)
Yeah I also refuse to wear used socks and underwear. So thanks but no thanks. I'm sort of amazed at how bad they can actually be as a game store at times considering that is what they're supposed to be.
I think the Wii, 360 and PS3 is actually retro but I can't imagine a Retro Game store that does not have PS1, PS2 or cartridges is not a passable store
Well, Goodwill itself is a shadow of what they it used to be. They used to get consoles and used to sell them locally. Now they ship them to a central location. It also irritates me that they will take a console and then separate its parts components and cords instead of a complete playable package
Well if they want to get my retro game money yeah, they should have. Perhaps they could use all of the shelf space that they have selling cheap plastic merchandise and their beloved Funko pops
@codywhitaker800 Then why Did they actually make a big deal about trying to claim that they were opening special "retro stores". That's why people are calling them out as a cynical ploy. Actually, if you go to a GameStop it seems they make a lot more money off Funko Pops than actual games. They really seem more like Hot Topic with each passing day
Yes but on both of my videos I went to the two "Game Stop Retro" stores in Western Oregon, the first one had ZERO cartridges, and the 2nd one only had 7 NES games. That is quite something. The local dedicated retro game stores have thousands.
They are marketing to towards the people who were kids during 7th generation. I knew they weren't going to have any games from the 2600 to Dreamcast other than very few loose titles. Simply put, us who first console was the 2600, NES or Genesis aren't their customer base.
Or they just had a ton of Wii, WII-U, PS3 and 360s in their warehouses from people dumping their stuff for the PS4/Xbone and this is a cynical ploy to try to liquidate them.
@@8bitjoystick Perhaps, but we still not their target audience, nor haven't been in years. Whether you are a hardcore collector or into emulation, we have our own market. They know we are a very niche market. No worth it to going out and buy multiple copies of CIB NiGHTS for the Saturn or Jaguar version of Flashback. At the same time, if they DID cater to us and eventually ate up all the local MA & PA retro stores by offering fair prices, then people would be complaining even then. As GS would be the only player in town. Until Amazon comes in and "merges" with them.
@@nathanlamont9920 If you can't find a copy of Sonic the hedgehog on cartridge, then you basically fail as a game store. This is a cynical ploy to liquidate their existing stock of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games and to try and get whatever trade-ins they can but I'm not holding my breath because the idea of putting cartridges in the drawer is pointless. If you can't see it, you're not going to know that it's there.
I feel like DK Oldies is more of a "brand" or even "cynical" take on the "local video game store" thing that GameStop should probably eye. Prices are high, visibility is high thanks to social media, and they do provide a service they claim by trying to make sure consoles are working/refurbed (I know its debated how well they do that) and games are authentic (again, criticism aside, just noting the claims). GameStop could go this route but based on what I've seen they are being run by non-gamers who are just trying to extract as much wealth as possible while they ride their free life-support given to them by "meme stocks" exchangers. If it wasn't the blockchain stuff, or the very aggressive upselling, now this -- not sure they're even slightly tapped into the gaming zeightgeist, they're just flailing and learning nothing. I do think the meme-stock people are hurting the brand more than helping it in terms of it needed to start pivoting thanks to a future of all-digital consoles.
Well, I was curious about what a different GameStop Retro looked like. What's crazy is it's in the same area as Tapper's Retro Games and Toys and two Retro Game Trader locations so Washington County Oregon is actually top-shelf for retro games from the independent stores.
Update: I said Megaman Legends instead of Megaman Legacy... DOH!
Good meeting you today!

I remember when they were throwing away 360 games & locking them in dumpsters.
I bet that they paid that person with NES games a dollar for each game and now they're selling them for 20 bucks a piece.
