I love the N64, but both of my units dying after carefully being placed in storage is painful. I thought these things were built to last, but I was wrong. Now I am left with 2nd hand units that are questionable in condition in the 2nd hand market. The analog console might be the next best option in today's time.
Hi. Could you please confirm if the Everdrive N8 works on the Retorn 1 HD console? I've read in many forums it doesn't, but you seem to feature it in you video.
It partially works. It works for NES and Famicom games. The instant Saves states and the Famicom Disk System games do not work. The regular in-game saves work fine.
@@8bitjoystick Thanks a bunch! That's a well documented answer.
@@8bitjoystick I'm currently running my Everdrive on a real NES with a Retrotink 2x... But in all honestly. I sometimes I just want a simpler setup to play the classics.
@@8bitjoystick I also have a PowerPak from RetroUSB... But that old thing won't run in any clone systems I've tried over the years.
@@aftereando Well Have you seen the RetroUSB AVS? I LOVE that thing. Seriously th-cam.com/video/esFCkANsroY/w-d-xo.html
Looking cool Joker
I initially bought the PlayStation 4 version of Persona 5 and then I got about halfway through it and then had to buy it again to get the persona 5 Royal PS4 version. And then there asking to buy it again for the PS5 version and I'm just gonna stick with the PS4 version of Royal. I used to have a lot more time for RPGS before I started this TH-cam channel
Man, I hated that glitch, had it happen twice on me when I was a youngling
What's crazy is the folks at Hawthorne Game Exchange participate in the video game system repair community and they couldn't get it working. So if all the console modders couldn't get it working it is dead.
@ yeah, unfortunately an untimely end to an amazing game, I wasted a lot of hours in front of it glued to a visually poor color tv, backing the 80’s
so no joystick with fami version?
Nope. but it came with the big A&B buttons. I use this keyboard every day and I love it but I've never actually used the big A&B Buttons. I LOVE this keyboard.
This is a great video. Honestly, my eyes tell me that the new Chromatic blows them all away. I gotta have one!
They are all quite good. It is a matter of personal choice. I am glad we have such good choices.
Pretty cool. I've played the gameboy version and liked it. I feel like it's too dangerous going for EXTRA after stage 6, but I'm no expert. Thanks for showcasing!
The famicom version is crazy expensive, so that's my motivation to getting the Retro-Bit NES version. I think Japanese Game Boy version is reasonably priced or at least not crazy over $100 prices
Nice detailed comparison. The Analogue LCD+ screen seems to match the original screen best, also close to the Chromatic's. This comparison also shows how hard it is to get audio right even via FPGA emulation. They all sound good, but none is quite the same as the original. Must be because of the analog audio circuitry, opamp, etc. involved in the original hardware, too hard to replicate 100%.
Well, I actually think the analogue Pocket's screen looks like the original the least. It is much larger than the original and sort of looks like a computer instead of a Game Boy Color. I mean it's good and but It has more of a modern feel than an authentic feel. It's sort of like part of your brain thinks that you're playing on a game system from the late '90s when you're playing the chromatic or the FPGBC, But when I play on the analogue pocket I think. Yep, I'm playing on a modern system.
@@8bitjoystick Yeah I was only referring to the screen colors (and specifically the LCD+ display mode), not the size. The Chromatic definitely seems to do a lot better at replicating the original feel. The ideal for me would be a screen kit for the original GBC using this custom screen from the Chromatic. It wouldn't get any more authentic than that.
Wow making me want to get into famicom
There are more games that stayed in Japan then we got in North America for the NES. They are way cheaper too.
The original gameboy color is better, you just need to replace the screen with an upgraded ips one. The original gameboy color will always be the goat
As long as you pick a screen that can do the spaces. If there is no spaces on the IPS screen then it does not look like a game boy, that is why I like the FPGBC and FunnyPlaying's IPS screens
@8bitjoystick true
I like TOTL but they way overprice their games. It's like 20-30% above ebay.
But there is no shipping when you buy games from TOTL in person and they actually test them. Plus you can open the carts up if you want.
@@8bitjoystick Yeah but a ton of other game stores in the area offer those same amenities and their prices are usually at least right at eBay or just under. Sidequest, Double Jump, Final Form and Hawthorne all offer the same level of customer service and are also more reasonably priced. And most online stuff you buy these days usually comes with free shipping and easy returns- brick and mortar needs to be more competitive if they want to sell in the game space. I've ordered thousands of games online and I think I can count on one hand the issues I've had with damaged or non-working stuff- it's just not that big of an issue if you buy from reputable sellers. I think TOTL makes most of their money off non-gaming stuff like cards, warhammer, etc so they probably don't care as much about how competitive they are in the game scene in Portland, but I personally rarely visit the store these days as I know anything I want to buy is probably $10-$20 cheaper or more if I shop literally anywhere else except RGT. on the westside. And the RGT model works because they sell to well-off Intel and Nike bros who don't care to check the price, but that same model doesn't work as well in Inner SE. As I said- I do like the store and I like the owner, but out of all the stores in Portland, I buy the least from them because the pricing is just not competitive on most of their retro stuff. You go to their store all the time I'm sure- you have to notice that a lot of the same titles sit- in your video here I saw many titles that I know have sat there since they opened.
I'm torn I have a Analogue Pocket & Dock which I love with updates the GB & GBC games look great in LCD and LCD+ mode. The Chromatic is designed to play GB & GBC which it does quite well from everything I have seen. The fact that the Everdrive GB X7 doesn't work at least with the pre release Chromatic I hope that gets fixed in the retail version I think it's going to be the final decision maker for me 15:31 buying the Chromatic. I appreciate your video if you have any Chromatic updates we.need to know about please let us know 😊
Well the thing is Metal Jesus and Immortal. John Hancock had the everdrive working on their systems so it looks like it's just me. Besides, I let the company know about it and they're working on it.
Great video, thank you! Can you tell us which console had the loudest audio output? Did any distort or was noisy?
So the analog pocket was loudest both with the built-in speakers and the line out. Its audio is actually distorted at maximum volume with the line out. I actually had to lower it in order to get a good recording out of it. All the rest were at maximum volume when I recorded and didn't have any sound distortion
I have 3 N64 systems and I still preordered the 3D. The video output on the N64 is terrible for most modern applications/TVs.
What modern applications are you talking about besides playing Nintendo 64 games? But I kid I kid the Nintendo 64 was designed for CRT TVs, It will be interesting to see what the analogue 3D actually looks like when it takes games that were designed for CRT TVs and upscales them or stretches them to a 4K tv
@8bitjoystick late at night post. Meant to say modern displays, tvs. I have 2 rgb modded systems and 1 standard and it looks quite rough still. It's better if the graphics are not being converted from digital, analogue, digital.
The new tech Game Boys being created is re igniting the game boy market. Everyone wanting to get a good library for their Game Boy Color we dreamed of as a kid
Agreed. I'm actually more excited about Game Boy and Game Boy Color now than I have been in years
The new tech Game Boys being created is re igniting the game boy market. Everyone wanting to get a good library for their Game Boy Color we dreamed of as a kid
Well I was 11 when the original Game Boy came out. I have more of a history with the original Game Boy but I also got a Game Boy Color when it came out as well.
@@8bitjoystick same exact thing. I have history with both but def the og library is better and more nostalgic for me. I bet you got game boy color for your pokemon red or blue back in the day
Update the firmware on your FPGBC so you have the Gameboy boot logo
Well after this I updated the firmware on my system to the latest and greatest version. But I'm a little cautious about firmware hacking and such. I'm going to stick to the stock firmware.
@@8bitjoystick I actually had to down-grade my firmware on my FPGBC to 1.08. The newer versions didn't play well with my generic multicarts.
So far so good. I upgraded to the latest firmware and apparently this was the first firmware where the update process was supported on a Macintosh. So I'm glad that I didn't brick it.
No everdrive support is a shame
Well apparently some other reviewers had their everdrives work just fine. Hopefully it will get fixed in a update to either the system or the everdrive
@8bitjoystick, Can you please link the scanline generator?
Sure th-cam.com/video/AqM_xZgo2vs/w-d-xo.html And a.co/d/iae1K1J
I am amazed with this design.I
It looks cool but it isn't the most convenient to get NES cartridges in and out of.
@8bitjoystick 🫢 thanks for the info!!!
All look pretty good. For my $199, the choice of the Analogue Pocket was an easy one.I love that it can also play GBA/GameGear/Lynx/Neo•Geo Pocket Color/TG-16/PCEngine carts/cards. As well play roms from the SDcard slot. Not only that but it also runs just about every portable system, console, and computer, from the 70s through the early 90s. And even hundreds of amazing arcade FPGA cores. Oh, and I love playing classic Game Boy games with the DMG-01 filter. It looks exactly like I remembered playing games in 1989 (albeit with backlighting).
I put together a playlist of my FPGA Handhelds. th-cam.com/play/PLvNnbGS52eVYdOUakja2AydaiTrJw3PWa.html&si=cmlYRMGh0kPdmhh5 The Analogue Pocket is $220 and shipping raises it to $240. I am amazed at how good OpenFPGA has gotten. I like the Analogue Pocket but off all three it feels the least like a Game Boy. The screen and the body is too big compared to an actual Game Boy. I like it for playing other portable systems and in Dock mode. It is big and powerful and I use it to make these videos but the other ones remind me of the Game Boy a little more.
I guess when it comes to the Game Boy I resonate more with the old DMG-01. The A Pocket matches the large shell of that nearly 1:1, IIRC. Being old, I also prefer larger screens so I can see them easier. :P I was lucky and got the A Pocket at launch for $199.99. Surprisingly the shipping was only $21 for the entire order (Pocket, Dock, GG adapter, power supply, and MIDI cable). I have probably been using it mostly lately to play all of the amazing arcade cores that have been coming out. All of the CPS1/CPS2/Konami 90s stuff/Irem/Sega-16, and so on. I am also thinking of buying an Analogizer so I can use it on my Wega. I guess the takeaway is that we have many great options to enjoy games these days. Nice playlist BTW.. I'll have to make my way through it. :) take it easy.
6:29 So this feature works the same as on the original Game Boy Color? If so, then great! 6:37 My suggestion: An option in the menu to choose a default palette.
There is optional color pallets that you can trigger by holding down buttons when powering on the unit. Go to the manual and check out the Hot Key section. I agree I want these available from the on screen and saved. modretro.com/pages/chromatic-manual
Why didn't you buy the retropie?
Well I already have a retropie 4. however after I made this video a friend of mine stated that he wanted this so I went back and got it for him. I will have to make a follow-up video. I already recorded the footage for it and I'll have to edit it together when I have the time
I ordered one. I'm not sure why the Chromatic is so controversial. I never pulled the trigger on the Analogue Pocket. I know it's great, but I prefer a more focused playing experience. It's like playing a Gensis game with a SNES controller. You can do it, but it's not the same. Thanks for the heads up on the Everdrive. I still have my GB/GBC library so I'll be fine, I just hope it works. I've seen others that used theirs with no problem. Thanks for the video.
@@woprdroid I think that all these different systems have their own unique advantages. If your priority Is to play game boy and game boy color games on cartridges with a deluxe experience Then the Chromatic is an excellent pick. If you wanna put together your own system and ypu prioratize efficency then the FPGBC is a good pick. If you want the biggest possible screen and want to play the most systems then I would go with the Analog Pocket. They're all really excellent options. I bet the Everdrive will get fixed with updates to either the drive or the Chromatic
Great review, but I don't think you've mentioned the battery life of the Chromatic. In fact, I've yet to see a single review that talks about how long the device lasts on typical AA batteries, wich seems baffling to me as that's pretty important to know for a handheld system.
Well it came with three batteries and it lasted about a week. I switched it to some rechargeable batteries. Apparently it gets between 6 to 8 hours depending on screen brightness and use. I thought the battery life was decent
@8bitjoystick Thanks for the reply! 6 to 8 hours seems fine to me, though of course it doesn't beat the DMGs ridiculous 30+ hour battery life. I did end up ordering a Chromatic, and I'm looking forward to testing how long it lasts with different battery cell types (a bit of a bummer that the rechargable battery pack isn't offered yet). Here's hoping it gets to me before the end of the year..
@@leonbabic7185 is my understanding that FPGA systems are relatively power efficient when handling the system like the game boy. Most of the power draw is on the screen and the brightness of it. I didn't do any comprehensive battery tests. But perhaps I should in a new video. They're all pretty good and I've never had any of these suck down power to the point that I couldn't play all the games that I wanted to on it. Battery life is actually gotten so good these days not an issue which is great because I had a SEGA Game Gear back in the day and it sucked down batteries. I would have to give it some thought as to how I would even do a battery test. Like charge everything up. Put Tetris on it and then come back to it and record video at various times and talk about the time and see you when each system ran out of juice. The chromatic isn't even out yet, but it's expected to launch in December 2024, which is almost here and then the company is planning on unveiling the battery pack and accessory like the headphones and such.
Keep the stay awesome! play retro Slogan. Also cool vid! I had the game gear versions of these game. Good memories!
I do plan on keeping it. The Game Gear versions actually seem a little harder because you can't see forward as much as you can on the master system versions
Excellent review. This thing is really nice. I don't know if I'll bite but if I see one in a Game Stop I might not stop myself.
I'm always worried about my reviews either not going into enough detail or being too long. Well, I believe they are taking pre-orders right now and the gray is a GameStop exclusive color. They're also going to be carrying all the games there published by ModRetro.
Best one is original gameboy color with amoled mod screen ;3
Well, as long as it actually has a Game Boy grid and doesn't look like it emulator. If the LCD pixels are right next to each other, then it ends up, looking like a computer and not a game boy.
If you did a button test, which would come out on top? Or is that a separate video?
It is a personal preference. I like the Chromatic and FPGBC for being the closest to the GameBoy Color. The Analogue Pocket feels like a Super Nintendo.
@ word! How bout the Dpad?
Well the d-pad on the chromatic is very good. It responds just like a Game Boy. The d-pad on the fpgbc is perfect. It even feels just like a Game Boy with the arrows and the circles. The d-pad on the analog pocket is good. I don't have any serious complaints about it. Some people don't like it. But my gripe is more with the buttons. But basically I sort of chart by exception. If it's good you're not going to hear me go off about it unless it really blows me away. It's the screen and the compatibility with all the multiple systems that really impresses me with the analog pocket.
@ gotcha! Thank you for the coverage and the thorough follow up bro 🤙🏼
Thanks for the comprehensive review
Thanks, my hardware videos always seem to be popular. I mostly started this channel to talk about games but end up talking about game hardware.. I can live with that.
Bought one today
Well, which model did you get?
Never realized how similar the screens look when optimally set up. Kudos for the great comparison shots!
Well I wanted to show the systems next to each other. That's important because the analogue pocket has different screen size and the FPGBC has so much of the screen creating a border around the GBC size screen area
Analogue likes to make great stuff, go over the top with it, over price it, make limited amounts of it, then move on. They're the dark side.
Actually. My most disliked video ever is a semi-sarcastic video that I made about analogue somewhat distasteful pre-order practices. I actually do think that they should take pre-orders for existing products If they're going to make more or do their pre-orders like Apple does. Basically take everyone's money, ship them in order of people ordered and don't let people buy more than one unit to dissuade people flipping them on eBay. I'm okay with buying their systems at regular price, but they're not worth $500 flipped on eBay th-cam.com/video/vPyY2WqB-Kk/w-d-xo.html
@8bitjoystick you're right. And, if they'd make an affordable, decent looking NT Mini, they could sell all they wanted of them still today - price themselves at, near, or below a Retron 5 and AVS system. But no.
That's why I'm glad there is the Retro USB AVS. So I can have an fpga way to play any NES in famicom carts and not give any money to eBay flippers. th-cam.com/video/esFCkANsroY/w-d-xo.html
@8bitjoystick I've had my AVS for a year now and have absolutely loved it. I do hope Brian continues to support the project. It's been well over a year since anything new out of RetroUSB, no firmware updates or news or anything. Wouldn't it be something if a new AVS came out with USB-C power plug, other output options than 720p HDMI alone, maybe a PowerPak integrated into the system somehow?
I wish you tried it with AMOLED Gameboy color mod. I rebuilt an old broken GBC with that screen mod and man it's amazing!
Yeah but does that have the pixels without the Game Boy grid? I don't like the modded screens that don't have the options to do a grid. They end up looking like emulators and if I wanted that I could just use my Miyoo Mini Plus
1080p + youtube compression = can't tell the difference on screens. , at least use 1440p, so youtube applies a different type of video compression with less quality loss
Well I also shot it on a three year old phone and a $20 tripod. I wish I had 2k-3k to put into a DSLR set up. I have a 4k Elgato FaceCam Pro but usually end up working at 1080p since most of my videos are about 640x480. Tell you what.. I'll put the lossless version on a google drive for you.
@@8bitjoystick I would appreciate that. I kind of want to take a closer look at those screens.Using video editing software to enhance the video quality to at least 1440p from 1080p. The difference in quality is quite noticeable with the encoder TH-cam uses at 1440p and above, and even at 1080p, it will look better , nice video, excellent comparison between screens :)
Here is the uncompressed 2.5 gig QuickTime file. Also in Final Cut Pro, when I scaled the side-by-side screen comparison for all three of them, I scaled it to 50%, so the pixels would be integer scaled and when I recorded the screens I didn't do any kind of color correction on. drive.google.com/file/d/1-GyqNpXaKp22fRYFmh-ilL4pXG72YoZ5/view?usp=drivesdk
You can get two FPGBCs and an official link cable for less than the Chromatic, which I did and I've been enjoying the multiplayer! Some games I play fullscreen without the filter, others I use the filter- just depends on the art style personally.
Actually that's a good point about the price. it would be really cool to get an fpgbc and a copy of Pokemon and give it to a girlfriend and get the other copy of Pokémon for yourself and run it with an fpgbc and collect and trade Pokemon against each other like it was the year 2000. Well the fpgbc is great for people that like to put stuff together and are down with picking their fpga cores and setting the various Game Boy Color compatibility Settings for screen fixes. The Chromatic works out of the box, has a metal shell and is probably going to sell a lot of copies from GameStop to normal folk who are not down with the minutiae of retro video games. Personally I really like both. Now I'm on the hunt for Dragon Warrior 3 for GameBoy Color because currently I'm playing through Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 on the Chromatic and FPGBC. I like the premium feel of the chromatic and I like the durable plastic feel of the fpgbc and I'm not worried about throwing it in my bag and having it get damaged. Both are good
I've heard the Chromatic has a brighter screen than most so it's better when outdoors. Did you notice that? Also I've heard several people saying the d-pad and button feel is really good and better than the AP. Also the USB typc-C can be connected to a PC to record/stream the audio/video. Does that feature work yet or is it coming soon? Also that sapphire screen cover means it will be very hard, almost impossible to scratch! There's a lot to like with the Chromatic. It ain't cheap but the price seems reasonable considering it also has a magnesium shell and the native screen is one of a kind. I might get one but I like the FPGBC too and for the price it's a high value alternative. Sure no premium materials (metal or sapphire) but it still looks and plays great.
The chromatic has goddamn amazing viewing angles that work just about all the time, the FPGBC is not bad either. I actually do enjoy the d-pad and buttons on the chromatic better than the analogue pocket. So when you hook the chromatic up to a Windows PC it will be recognized as a webcam and you can use an app like OBS or anything else to stream from it. currently they're waiting to be certified by Apple and so it doesn't work on Macintosh yet but it does work on Windows. They are going to have it working on Mac by launch. I think the chromatic is better for wanting something that just works out of the box and the fpgbc is a good option for people who like to put things together and Tinker with it.
@@8bitjoystick LOL my bad I missed your previous video where you show and mention all that.
It's all good. Talking in comments helps video engagement
