There's a Retro GameStop in my neck of the woods, second time I went they had a few NES/SNES/N64/GameBoy/GBA/Genesis games (albeit they weren't actually out on the store floor, they had generic cases and you brought them to the checkout), and even an N64 Console available. Props to that store for at least trying.
Honestly, this makes more sense than any other reasoning at this point 😂 especially with the one employee saying that most of their retro section is just old inventory they hadn't put out yet
That was my thoughts exactly. I went to two Retro stores and it looks identical to pawn shop. Just basically a tiny selection of copies of games that you couldn't even give away.
Gamestop employee here. I would say the stock of stores depends heavily on what people bring to trade. Recently a lady brought 2 NES CIB, ps2 cib, ps1 cib. It just depends what people bring, corporate mostly sends ps3/360 stuff
It seems what is considered "retro" these days is anything older than the last two generations of consoles. I consider "retro" to go all the way back to even the days of the original "Pong" or Magnavox Odyssey. I especially think of things like Atari 2600, Intellivision or Colecovisio as being "retro", but then again, being a 55 year-old that grew up through the 70s and 80s, so I remember when all that was brand-new and current state-of-the art at the time. Also to add, I even consider many of the arcade games from the "golden age of arcade" to be "retro", such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Defender, Joust, etc, many of which can be played these days via emulation.
Exactly! I have a Magic Eraser right here, and this is what is says on the back of the package: "*WARNING Not recommended for the following surfaces: high gloss, polished, dark, brushed, satin, faux, bare/polished wood, copper, stainless steel, non-stick coating, or vehicle body". Noticed, it said "dark, brushed, satin, faux", which is exactly the type of surface that is on that XBox 360. Those people that used the Magic Eraser on that console, apparently did not even read the dang instructions that are printed on the friggan package!
360, PS3, Wii, DS, and _especially_ *3DS and Wii U* are retro? That is certainly a wild thing to think about. Like a lot of people here, when I think 'Retro' I think Arcade, Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis and others. _(I'm 16 and played games like LEGO Batman and Sonic Generations when I was little so it isn't generational bias.)_
I've been to a couple of their "retro" locations and they are no different than the normal ones. A few Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, and PS3 is all they have and has been that way for many years.
I've got very lucky with the Retro Gamestop near me. A consistent selection of good PS1 and PS2 games still in the box, and the guy who runs it loves old games and is a collector. Honestly a real breath of fresh air from Gamestop.
My local Gamestop was doing this but they just gave up and now a quarter of the tiny store is all about trading cards with a table awkwardly in the way and everything.
LOL, after seeing this, I just HAVE to visit the one “Retro” store in my area now. It seems like others who’ve posted make it look like they’ve got this AWESOME selection of original Xbox and GC games - CIB no less. That’s probably one in 100 stores kind of stuff. Gotta love the way that the employee said, “Designated” - even with the warped audio, I can imagine the guy throwing up air quotes with his hands as he said it, haha!
Every time I watch your videos I just see the TH-camr “Big Jiggly Panda” you look so much like Anthony it’s uncanny. Awesome videos. Been watching for years
I think some people do throw away boxes for the games but GameStop gives the same trade in value for games whether they’re loose or in box..so you can just trade in the carts or discs and then sell the boxes separately on eBay or something if they’re boxes that are somewhat sought after
Many of those loose discs you see at stores like Gamestop are discs that were stolen from thrift stores, pawn shops, and maybe even the thieves' friends or not so good friends. You won't believe how many empty retro game cases I have seen at thrift stores and pawn shops over the past decade. I rarely ever buy loose games for the reasons I have given. I probably have a handful because those games would have been difficult to find in stores here complete in box, which I prefer. Gamestop has been awful for the past decade, not many reasons why I would ever want to shop there anymore. I currently play only retro PS1 or PS2 games and Gamestop just never has anything I want anymore.
I mean is anyone really surprised their inventory consists solely of unwanted merchandise? They stopped accepting old games years ago, how else are they going to have ds and ps2 games if it's not from old inventory?
A lot of stuff gets bought instantly. Every time my gamestop gets anything good and i go to buy it they always say they just put it on the shelf. Its happened multiple times over a few months so i assume theres a few guys buying stuff up as it comes in
So I recently learned the built-in storage modules on matte-finish 360 S's tend to go bad. Good on GameStop for taking the thing out and installing a hard drive.
I worried about that problem myself. Ive got the 4gb onboard Corona. Should i sell it because it still works? I dont have hard drive cartridge for it. Will the console be useless if the internal memory fails?
@@matttherrien9608 That's rough. Glad it works, but it's pretty much on a timer. If I were you, I'd get a drive for it. It won't be able to hold data otherwise.
Glad I came across this video I was going to visit one during the holidays to see if they had a PSX on hand but it seems that they don’t at all and they only go as far back as the ps2 in my area
I’m pretty sure the reason they’re missing cases is because they threw them out yeeears ago. I remember a time when Game Stop still had PS2 games on the shelf in the cases and then the next time I went they were all removed from the main shelves and put in those cheap paper sleeves with a clear plastic window. I asked if it was just to store them in a smaller space, but the employee told me they were as is and they had no cases behind the counter. Sad.
I think the reason why they do not sell like Super Nintendo or Nintendo 64 games or Sega Genesis is because a lot of people were scamming GameStop with those games back in the early 2010s when they were accepting Nintendo games or Sega games they were selling them reproduction cards like for an example some customers who have reproductions of rare games and they will sell them to GameStop and GameStop didn't know if they were repos or legit cards so people were getting a lot of money out of these games that were reproductions
In the one I went to had a little corner, with the only thing catching my eye was PvsZ for the ds, I'd say it was a sad collection but good enough for a few retro games.
my problem is that i would love to go to a retro gamestop but my only problem is that i would buy gameboy and ds games. The thing with that, is with those games there are tons of counterfeits out there. So how exactly is gamestop doing what is needed to precent these counterfeits from being taken and sold to consumers? With how they are known to barley even do anything to actually refurbish consoles, how can we expect them to do the minimum and give us real copies of games that we are clearly paying above what the games are worth.

My 2 local mall GameStop had more. One had 2 SNES games and the other had 3 PS1 games. They so had n64 console and GameCube.

Btw I really like the other type of video you made in the last video, doing stuff on obscure technology has always been cool to me lol. And you should buy 3DS/Ds games for a video and explore the saves because the saves are saved on the cartridge itself. Pokémon games (eBay, def not GameStop or big stores) usually have pretty cool saves.
I was talking to a GameStop clerk today about their retro section and they told me that Mario Party 9 (loose) was $70. No original box, cover art, or manual. I bet the disc wasn’t resurfaced so it’s probably a little messed up The only positive thing they showed me was that they had Mario Party 2 for the 64, but it was behind the counter and no indicator that they had it
Gamestop destroyed and tossed so much retro product. They don't have a ton of backstock. I work at Gamestop for many years. They didn't send a lot back to warehouses, just pennied out and trashed them. Shameful
There is a local retro game shop in Fairbanks Alaska ( The secondary Market) I like to go to get games for my N64, I rather go there then GameStop for retro games.
Gamestop employee here, yeah, corporate is certainly coming up with some "interesting" ideas lately. Retro stores are a good idea in theory, but i dont know. I work in a smaller store of sorts, only seen a few gamecube games come in, maybe 3 or so PS1 games, a few ps2 (though at the time there were hardly any games we could take), certainly PS3 and Xbox 360 games but in my opinion, not really "retro" yet. Did have a couple N64 games come in semi recently but that's it. They even have all nearby stores sending all their retro stuff to the retro stores, and it's sad that the stores in the video have such little inventory. Worst part is, forcing customers to have to go to the retro store to get simple stuff that we used to carry regularly such as PS3, XB360, DS, and Wii Games. I personally sell retro disc games on ebay and amazon and honestly it makes me so sad seeing how gamestop is "handling" it all. I've never liked how they don't/won't separate games that are loose and ones that are either just missing their manual and/or complete. Expectations, expectations, expectations. Average customer no doubt that buys something on the website assumes/expects to get at the very least the original case when buying a game. Lets not even get into the condition of some of these games whether they be scratched up pretty good or terribly "resurfaced" with a ultra cheap machine leaving swirl marks. Their newest idea: They're going to start having us be middle-folks for PSA grading of cards here soon too, which is just weird. So customer will come in, have their card in a penny sleeve and some other special case over/on that (both of which of course GS sells in store, convenient) and then GS will ship it out to PSA to get it graded then charge the customer based on what PSA charged GS (and im assuming a bit more on top of that because of the "service") to pick it up. There's more to it, just can't remember.
As someone else who works at Gamestop the retro stores are not doing well since other stores are not sending the retro stuff to the retro stores. My store probably has more 360 games then the actual retro store itself. We don't want to send it to the retro store cause that stuff sells. Anytime retro stuff comes in to my store i try to sell it asap before we get a chance to send it out
I saw a fat PS5 digital at Game X Change for $430 the other day when I was shopping for a PS5. I asked them how they justified selling that console used for more than it was brand new.
The GameStop i sometimes go to here in Fremont, Ca actually shutdown months ago. Due to bad sales and very bad service, Kind of like what's happening with dkoldies.
I was wondering why I could buy one consoles all of a sudden. They weren't taking old stuff until recently. I bet their reasoning behind taking old stuff and selling them is to bring in more customers. Since their business is dying
Meanwhile in the UK, I got a copy of Pokémon pinball (the one with the inbuilt rumble) for gameboy colour for just £9.99 Moral: Don't go to GameStop, go to your local 2nd hand store
your math is blowing my mind right now lol there's definitely way more than 50 games in that short clip you showed from your last video. The bottom row alone is probably 50 games lol
Lol yeah, I'm more referring to the ones you can actually see (the ones with the artwork facing forward). Usually the ones they throw in those rows at the bottom are like $5 games they can't get rid of 😂
Did yall expect them to open full blown retro game stores wall to wall? I find gems once every other week grails even but I never expected them (within the months of announcing they’re bringing in retro) to have have full blown wall to wall retro stores… dial down the expectation and you won’t be soo disappointed 🤷🏽♂️ imo of course
It's this guys content, he loves putting business's down because they done him dirty in the past. It's enjoyable to an extent but does come off rather negative all the time.
I said it before and I'll say it again, if the console was released within the last 20 years, it ain't "retro", ain't necessarily modern either, mind you, but it ain't "retro". I feel like the whole "retro" thing is just cynical attempt to get rid of old stock and trade-ins while also cashing in on the marketing hype of "retro gaming" because I don't think anyone with any kind of real credibility can claim that the WiiU, a console that released in the 2010s and is literally Nintendo's last gen console, is "retro" in 2024. One day it will be retro, but it is not this day.
"Corporate is basically the tall ED from Ed, Edd, and Eddy". That's a wonderful illustration. Give that worker a raise.

GameStop is just chasing their tail at this point wondering why they aren’t getting anywhere.
Calling corporate ED is soo savage
Did yall expect them to open full blown retro game stores wall to wall? I find gems once every other week grails even but I never expected them (within the months of announcing they’re bringing in retro) to have have full blown wall to wall retro stores… dial down the expectation and you won’t be soo disappointed 🤷🏽♂️ imo of course
It's this guys content, he loves putting business's down because they done him dirty in the past. It's enjoyable to an extent but does come off rather negative all the time.
Ik for a lot of nicer retro stuff you have to ask the employees to pull them out
idk if my xbox 360 is rare but it doesn’t have an hdmi port
Retro Store: Because Green, Blue and Red means Retro!
I'm pretty sure I have more retro games in my tiny gaming room than that gamestop
lmao that ending... little sudden
I mean... "stop biting him, its already dead 😢" what do you expect, 100 games per console??
the gamestop by me has n64 and game boy advance consoles and games
If that's all they're going to sell in these retro stores 360 games and Playstation 3 games and Wii U games they got another thing coming
10 bucks for an original Xbox game is nuts!!
Glorious is very very awesome very very awesome very very
i was able to buy all of the og game boy color pocket monster games
Which investment firms are paying you to specifically trash gamestop?

I said it before and I'll say it again, if the console was released within the last 20 years, it ain't "retro", ain't necessarily modern either, mind you, but it ain't "retro".
I feel like the whole "retro" thing is just cynical attempt to get rid of old stock and trade-ins while also cashing in on the marketing hype of "retro gaming" because I don't think anyone with any kind of real credibility can claim that the WiiU, a console that released in the 2010s and is literally Nintendo's last gen console, is "retro" in 2024. One day it will be retro, but it is not this day.
