    This video made me want to ask several questions.
    1. Do you regularly listen to jazz. (Basie, Davis, Rollins, Monk, Hancock, Brubeck, Evans, Coltrane, Shorter, Gillespy) etc etc? . 2. Do you play an instrument? 3. If Yes, have you ever played jazz with real people ? From a technology point of view, this video was fun. But from the point of view of a jazz fan,
    none of these melodies resembled anything close to Jazz. In fairness, this was called GPT Jazz. That is good since this distinguishes it from Jazz. Jazz draws inspiration from soloists who’s improvisations are inspired by melodies, rhythm & chords. When I heard this videos jazz ballad, I head a quarter note melody with a half time beat. It resembled children’s music. The last song was easily the worst. Ps. I admire the work put into the video... but if you are going to make statements like “this is resonating with me”. I have to ask... are you also an A.I.? Trying to label GPT Jazz as JAZZ is akin to labeling a glass of water an Ocean... it’s not big or deep enough. Oceans Rhythmic tides are affected by the gravity of the moon. Human soloist ARE the MOON of JAZZ. Their improvisational gravity gives the music its Rhythmic Swing. It’s the Waves & not the Water that makes us move. 🙏🏽

    One idea: I find code interpreter to be really good at coding and structure. Plus it can write and run code. Maybe you can bring some of your code from colab into code interpreter, and have it do the entire generate idea, convert to notes, convert to midi and play process. That way everything can live in a single master prompt to be used with code interpreter.
    Keep up the awesome work!

      @@br0wning Let me put it this way: I found the output to be mediocre and it feels like it would require as much babysitting and expertise in music production to make something that I would like through this process.
      I can't say for the future, but that's why I check in with the channel and others work to see how things progress. I won't dismiss the work done thus far, but I also stand by what I said when I say I feel very little when I hear the music made this way. • @LogioTek
      @LogioTek ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AgonalRhythm yea I agree, it's still very early innings and it will be a while until it's easier to use and effective, for that to happen AI models need to become more malleable (i.e. you feed it example music pieces and AI model instance reconfigures itself to be ready to use this newly fed information to generate a tailored output for you, as opposed to pre-trained generic knowledge it currently uses), I know several companies are researching various techniques that can be used to live-update large AI models based on live data, that's the AI holy grail in my opinion

    • @rynabuns
      @rynabuns ปีที่แล้ว +5

      it's being trained by people who don't even like jazz so it'll never achieve great results
      like they probably fed it the millions of mediocre lo-fi beats they found on youtube, made by producers who hate music theory so much they bought a midi chord pack
      so you end up with "one chord change per bar, strictly on the first beat" "what are inversions" "jazz = 7ths" "c major only" student's-first-composition level of trite
      maybe in a few years it'll improve but until people who genuinely love music have an input, it'll remain mediocre

    AI relies on human created content. The Sara Silverman case might be the biggest class action suit ever.
    As a musician who spends countless hours developing a unique improv style and sound, I must admit, it bothers me that AI could eventually vacuum up everything I developed and spit it back out in variation.
    This tech is rendering human creative arts, for which most make little to no money, valueless and even robbing a sense of intrinsic value itself.
    It goes beyond art, but includes social media data, which AI will eventually vacuum up to replicate everyone’s personality (or at least their online personality), so Meta etc. can create marketing models etc. or do weird things we haven’t even considered.
    Doesn’t it seem like all of this will destroy the human creative experience and cheapen humanity overall?

      Photography didn't render portrait artists obsolete, nor did the typewriter ruin calligraphy. It's a supplement to our creativity that we can choose to use or equally ignore. Music has never been about being the best or selling the most records, least of all jazz; well, maybe for some it is. But not for most. It's just as much about the result as it is about the process, so humans will play music and make art as long as humans exist.

    • @hebejeebee
      @hebejeebee ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you make a really important point. The stuff that AI crates is really only worthy of advertising background sounds and definitely not of performance.
      This does mean a huge income hit for composers who have provided music for ads, as it will be very easy to bring this sort of thing in house and just let the production team churn out some fotofit sounds

    • @ili626
      @ili626 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sickcallranger2590 I take your points. Though it’s hard to step back in time to truly understand how tech has altered human experience.
      We adapt to change, but there was a time when the fact that going to the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa was a rarefied experience because one could never see it anywhere else. It was a far more special experience.
      A famous philosopher (forgot name) called this the art’s aura.. and all art had it. I think Andy Warhol was trying to preserve this in the face of commercialism with his repeated images (to say each was “unique” despite looking the same)
      But clearly, a distinctive quality of art was lost due to photographed replicas. And we can see how happened and continues to happen for virtually everything.
      It’s like a form aesthetic entropy.. everything gets cheapened into a sea of “sameness”. Just because we adapt, doesn’t mean that it’s good, but it’s complicated and probably a mix of “good” and “bad”..
      It remains to be seen, but I would not presume to fully understand what has been lost since the pre-industrial times. The Transcendentalists had valid concerns regarding how human experience and culture was shifting. I would’ve like to hear recordings of the great composers improvising though…

    • @sickcallranger2590
      @sickcallranger2590 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ili626 There's for sure a point in saying that with commercialization and consumer culture, it's more difficult to truly stand out, and what does stand out is easily knocked back down.
      That's honestly a valid concern. But I don't think AI will make it much worse than it already is. If anything, it seems that it might be a means of introducing a whole new group of people into a formerly exclusive club. While it'll definitely break the floodgates and introduce a lot of mediocre garbage, it may also foster unforeseen creativity and give way for something new and unique to emerge. That's the optimistic outlook, at least.

    I'm against harmonic alignment, after all what's the point of aligning an AI? Let it do it's weird thing.
    Don't make it appeal to humans, make humans learn to enjoy the insane.
    This bit where the pseudo-coltrane melody was reduced to just 7 notes, but still with perfect syncopation, was actually pretty to me. This is truly inventive. In the same sense a Bach piece begins with a theme, this snippet was actually a great intro with lot's of space left for improv in the piece itself.
    Jazz themes are like that, the simpler they are, the more room for magnificent improve they give. Just roll with stuff people, don't over-adjust.
    Honestly, don't trust your taste too much, it's just an excuse to repeat what is familiar to you. Repetition is the art killer.
    All that said, the result was magnificent, thank you for doing this.

    As someone familiar with jazz, I was impressed with the AI's ability to create music. While it was clear that some of the pieces were generated by AI, I could still appreciate the improvement from previous versions. The ballad in particular sounded great and could possibly pass as authentic if played by real jazz musicians. However, the AI-generated tunes lack uniqueness and are limited to basic 2-5-1 jazz knowledge. As such, AI cannot fully explore the boundaries of jazz, and I believe that real musicians cannot be replaced.
    For instance, the AI chose a 1-6-2-5 progression for "Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star." This is a common jazz progression, but it does not always fit every melody. In this case, the chords and melody seemed independent of each other. On the other hand, the same progression was used in the jazz ballad and worked well because the chords fit the melody and vice versa.
    While the 9:17 piece was slightly challenging to listen to at times due to clashes between harmony and melody, I still found it slightly enjoyable. It didn't sound like jazz, which is ok, but the AI was told to do jazz so it should have made jazz.
    The chords in the Coltrane ballad were pleasing, but the melody did not make sense. Overall, the video created with Pika was impressive, despite a few blunders. These mistakes actually made the video more entertaining to watch. Despite some errors.
    So in the end, I am impressed by the AI. Of course, it had some errors, but the ballad was good.

    Man this makes me really want a tool that allows you to send AI an existing chord progression or melody you have and let it generate stuff like harmonies, extend the original composition, or more

    I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, and I don't even know how did you come up with those MFDOOM bars. But they are oddly similar to Sandman by A$AP Rocky. Cool video though!

    I can see this turning into a whole genre itself, AI-generated music, coming along kinda like the sampling movement did. Ngl, the concept of AI taking such major roles in our lives is still a bit scary to me but this video somehow made me feel not AS frightened.
    Dont really know what to say but... rock on, cheers

    Hi there! Amazing results. I’m just wondering, beyond telling the model what format it should use, did you fine tune it with common melodies/harmonies or are you just using the data with it was already fed? It’s interesting how it seems to “understand” the language and know how Twinkle Twinkle is 🤔
