    Loved his insight on the "Jazz is dying" line. John Legend basically makes that same point in the movie: that jazz is as much about changing as it is about the music, and if Sebastian wants to really keep jazz alive, he can't try to keep it in the past.

    16:49 Miles is playing the drums most of the time, but usually if they did shots without his face it was a pro jazz drummer filling in (ba-dum-tss) for the harder parts. Also, it seems like he didn't watch Whiplash since he talked a while about the drummer just suddenly starting without the director counting.
    The whole point of that part is him getting back at Simmons' character (the band director) for tricking him into playing a song on stage that Miles didn't know. Especially by suddenly starting the uptempo Caravan in the middle of Simmons talking to the audience saying the band was about to play a slow downtempo song next.

Whiplash is basically a sports film with swing, La La Land is a musical and the lead happens to like Jazz (could’ve been blues or lounge as far as the plot is concerned). Nobody would be remotely interested in a fictional movie where Jazz is a focal point of the film. Hence why you only see it truly depicted in biopics

    I loved this video. I think it's also worth noting how male-dominated jazz is as a genre and field. The only woman jazz musician shown in the video was the unnamed trombonist at 20:24 for a moment. It's really common for big bands like the ones shown to only have 1 or 2 women, and not for lack of female talent. The jazz world is really exclusive and unwelcoming to women, and I'd love for people to talk about this more often

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but the jazz group that Miles is playing with at the end of Whiplash isn’t a group of kids like what he was playing with in Shaffer, if I remember correctly it’s a more experienced group of adults that fletcher assembled which would explain why they are able to catch on so easily when Miles cues them in.

    • @sergioosorio416
      @sergioosorio416 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may be, I don't remember exactly. Anyway, I think any musician who's been in a big band (myself included) will tell you that despite the fact that you may catch the song, to make that kind of entrance is just inconceivable. It's a total disrespect to the director, the rest of the band, and the music itself, because you probably would screw that up too. It's just not the context to do that. Basically you would just be sabotaging the whole band.

    Man, as someone who grew up really into rock and metal, I totally understand the whole jazz purist thing. Underground 80s metal has always been my favorite but there are people who fight to the death saying only classic metal is true. And people do this for every subcategory of metal. Just like how jazz has many different styles and constantly evolves, metal has done the same thing but people will disavow a certain style because it's "not true"

    The part where the man and the woman are talking on "LaLa Land" about jazz being music that people talk over is a conversation I've had SO MANY TIMES. I consider myself a half a jazz aficionado and I get upset when people don't have respect for the great music that jazz has given us. I literally spent the better part of 10 years trying to get more people into the music. In the end I learned one thing...you either dig good music or you don't. You either get cats like Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Bill Evans and so, so many others...or you don't.

    When people say jazz is dying they don't mean that almost no-one plays jazz anymore - they mean the popularity of jazz is plummeting. And it is. Jazz accounts for less than 2% of all the music consumed in the world every year. Downloads, streams, album purchases, whatever. It is deeply unpopular music, especially when you consider how many people consumed it prior to the advent of rock & roll in the mid-1950s. All those theatre shows, written by composers like George Gershwin and Richard Rodgers, were full of tunes written with a jazz sensibility.
