That ifak radio scene really set a hard look into how badly the hecu got their shit kicked in. 10/10 ambience that was missing from the original game
Honestly yeah the HECU almost went from “constant pain in your ass” to “forget about freeman” out of the blue.
HECU were kicking ass and taking names, but there's only so much you can do when the enemy can appear out of thin air and has constant reinforcements.
If only they had worked alongside the scientists and security of Black Mesa. Maybe they'd have fared better.

This song's chord progression is very close to what's called a Shepard Scale. It's an auditory illusion which gives the sense that the pitch of the melody is constantly increasing. Which is prefect for this song. Constantly rising tension. Unrelenting. Exhausting.

Man, this just makes me wish somehow Hunt Down the Freeman was good, imagine how utterly insane a 7 hour war combine holdout could've been. Watching marines drop left and right as you scavenge for bullets to try and hold back the tide of invaders. Good ass edit, props for getting me hyped with only audio.

I could defend the invasion solo
7 hour war was not a fight. 7 hour war was basically a beating of toddlers. The combine we see in HL2 are merely small garrison forces. The REAL invasion force literally destroyed all earth armies in 7 hours. It was anything BUT real war. Earth armies basically had no time to even try to resist.
Gunships flying past you and striders stomping your platoon and disintegrating your positions with a single shot. And a horde of combine soldiers marching towards your platoon's location without any signs of halting.
Honestly, the use of Saving Private Ryan D-day lines AND some BF1 intense battle responses just made this even more chilling. I'd recognize that cry for mama anywhere. Poor dude has his guts hanging out.

In response to said broadcast, 100% of available artillery and air support is directed to your complex, and they start laying hate. As if hate was going out of style.

Black Mesa got REAL with the HECU chatter and the PSAs [like the early hours where they were reporting strange activity in nearby towns/cities beyond the Black Mesa perimeter]. The HECU from Half-life were great and all for Marine tough guy tropes from the 80s and 90s, but the realism of the "IFAK" situation, where the dude was so out of it he sounded drunk, hit different. They weren't ready for that shitstorm -- and the survivors who somehow made it back to their base following the retreat definitely weren't ready for what was coming weeks and months after. Can't tell what would be worse: The disorderly chaos of wild otherworldly apex predators and aliens raging through the streets, or the orderly Hell implemented by the Combine. I guess the Combine.

One of my relatives survived the 6 day war on the Egyptian front. He was with his mates and an Israeli apache attacked them killing them all, except him. The Isreali Pilots left him to suffer and die in the desert land of Sinai. My uncle didnt have that planned though. A group of locals found him and took care of him until he was able to return back to Cairo on foot. He is alive till today but unfortunately still suffers from PTSD late at night. Lets pray that our loved ones don't face anything like this.

The Combine's advance into europe is inescapable. United nations forces, HECU units, and militia forces, all desperately defend their towns and cities. Berlin falls 5 hours into the war. In Amsterdam, Netherlands, a group of HECU soldiers and some civilians hold a position against The Combine, as they await evac that never comes. Pvt. Louis Barker is holding the position along with his brethern, surrounded by Combine forces. 30 minutes before the war ends, he puts earbuds in. What follows, is a 5 minute firefight in which the remainder of his brethern are killed by the relentless onslaught of The Combine. It is said he killed around 60 of their fighters, before his last radio message is made to a UN force stationed outside of Amsterdam, asking for assistance. With the death of Louis Barker, Amsterdam fell, and humanity's last hope for a scarce survival was obliterated. The 7 hour war, would end 25 minutes after Louis's death.
