Yeah im gonna put up video of all that. Might just be low on fluid but at this point the transmission is toast and needs a full rebuild. Not sure what it would cost for you to fix it for sure because you cant tell which parts are worn until you get it apart, but rebuild kits are generally $100-$200 depending on which one you get and what trans you have
Taking the transmission out isn't too bad, I just balance it on a jack and lower it down. I usually get most of my parts from transmissionpartsusa and wittrans. The rebuild was probably a few hundred dollars, I can't remember for sure though. I think I had the car in the garage for about a week, but I was filming and taking my sweet time. Installing the trans back into the car is probably the hardest part, just be patient when lining everything back up.
Great instructional video. You have now inspired me to try and repair my AOD transmission; however, I have a few question for you if you don't mind. 1) How hard was it to drop the 200 lbs transmission down from the car? 2) Where did you buy your replacement /rebuild parts? 3) How much did the rebuild cost? 4) How much time was involved start to finish? 5) How hard was it to remount the rebuilt tranny back into the car? Thanks in advance. Ron
Got a 94 Explorer where I'm still jerking around with a valve body update. Have a bunch of Sonax parts and a shift kit, still need to buy solenoids... Shifts from P to R or OD are pretty delayed imo and going from OD to R sometime provides me with a nice bang. Believe it or not, everything else seems to work alright. I think the twin trans coolers and extra capacity cooling system that Ford threw in this late 94 really helped the drivetrain to survive. I do sometimes wonder if it's worth it to drop and rebuild the whole tranny though. It's already lifted but I wanna slam 35's under this thing with 4.10's eventually. Probably a good idea to rebuild it huh?
Any time you change your fluid in the transmission, put in as many as it calls for, 10 if you do the full change, start the engine & let it idle for about 1 min, take out of park to R, & wait till you feel it kick in, then to N, wait for as long as it took for the R to kick in, then to OD, wait for kick in & then down D kick in & so on till you run all the gears, You won't feel the kick in 2 ed or first, just tap on the gas to see if its there with the other foot on the brake, If not you will damage the transmission, If you don't feel the kick let it idle in park & recheck the fluid to see if fluids are on the dip stick, This is a safety check way of not killing your transmission, You will burn these up if you run these dry. I know I had a quick lube cooked mine after 300 miles of fluid change, Rebuilder told me how to change mine & these are the steps I used & never had a problem again.
Hello sir thanks for the video I bought a trans said to have a manual valve body and everything works well except it shifts from 2-3 too fast were 2nd is almost not existent and bogs , the seems to downshift hard from 3rd to 1st hard I get that if I don't place it back, into first manually it's will stall. So I was wondering if you had any ideas or experience that could help thanks in advance
how long does it take for an experienced mechanic to swap out an AOD transmission on a 1988 crown vic? the mechanic said 8hrs but i heard somewhere else its more like 4-5...what do you think?
allo i change a oil filter on the transmission and now tha transmission dont change gear i put the vehicule on D i drove but dont change gear he stay on first gear i tight the bolt too tight and i loos them and its stil the same can you help me please
@tippman2k01 yea thats what i thought...its my friends shop and he just looked on the computer to get an estimate on labor, but if he tries to charge me full labor, im just gonna look around....im a student so i dont have a lot of money. lol but my 88 crown vic treats me well....its a great DIY car, and its because of that, i saved myself at least 1 grand
the ford AODE transmission is a piece of crap, i had 2 installed on my 1994 crown vic lx. the first one the drive clutches went at 96,000 mi, the second one stared making a whining noise 10 months later with 106,000 mi and i think the front pump is going.
You're pretty skilled if you can get a trans apart like that, and get it back together!
5 stars!

Thank you sir. This answered many of my questions!
It could be a linkage problem or if you were working inside the transmission the linkage may not be engaging the thottle valve properly.

@tippman2k01 It probably wouldn't actually take 8hrs but a shop is going to charge flat rate so you'll pay for 8 no matter how long it takes.

Cool. Now I want to try.
If got an aod in my f150. But it only has reverse when it's cold. When it warms up it's like nutral. U know whats wrong?
Do you have to remove the servos to disassemble?
Great video.
I have a 2004 F150 automatic. It is slow to shift form 3rd to 4th gear,Can you tell me what the problem might be. Thanks
