Awesome series. I rebuilt a 700R4 before and it was a major PITA. I also replaced just the OD band on an AOD before. I am thinking of building an AOD for my 67 mustang. Thanks for taking all this time to put the videos together. This will be super helpful.
@Gtromeo247 I re-watched the video and I named all the clutches, drums and bands right. It would have been easier to put the direct clutch hub into the direct drum before I put it in the case tho.
when i did the forward and reverse clutch, i put them together on the bench and then tied a shoestring around both and slid them in and then removed the string. helps a lot.
@thecardrawer10 I don't know if an E4OD would fit or not. You can probably do a google search and find a forum dedicated to broncos and see if anyone knows for sure.
@tippman2k01 You can get a rebuild kit for under $100 and do the job yourself, its just gonna be alot of work. The only tool I would have liked to have was the lip seal protectors for installing the seals. Other than that most of the other tools are pretty much just general tools you can get pretty cheap. If you decide not to rebuild it yourself you can still save some money by getting a used or rebuilt transmission and installing it yourself.
i have same trans 04 maruade i getting 2 codes po173 and p1740 do u think if i change my tcc solenoid in the trans that be my problem car cuts off sometime shifting from park to drive and o/d light flashes sometimes and when i take off i got too stay on gas to keep it going ..wat do u think....thanks
actually you got the right set up, but im also a rebuilder. You are naming certain parts wrong. The bottom drum set is actually overdrive on aode 4r70's set up and top is foward and direct drum with 2-3 band also with reverse. another thing when installing spin gear in overdrive drum you might want to put the gear in first then load the clutch set in which is easier. If you ever need any assistance be sure to e-mail
Is an FMX considered an AOD transmission? My FMX kickdown doesn't seem to have the punch required. I have a Holley 4 bbl with a rod type kickdown (I believe it's factory), but because of the lack of power in the kickdown mode, I was considering putting on a cable system (which Holley has the parts for, for a Ford AOD transmission)...but I don't know if an FMX fits that description. Thanks PS...does the rod inside of the Vac modulator on the back of the transmission have anything to do with the kickdown working)??
i am a amatuer mechanic. my AOD transmission might need a rebuild...i was missing a grommit on the throttle body, and it caused the transmission to start slipping. what i am curious is am i better off getting a rebuild kit and doing the job myself, or am i better off going to a shop to do it? keep in mind since i am not a certified mechanic, i do not have all the proper tools
I need help! i got an 89 bronco with a 302 and AOD 4x4. whats a good estimate for a rebuild? i dont want to spend no 2000 dollars to get it fixed and i dont have the tools nor the know how to repair it. it slips really bad and sometimes takes a while to kick into gear
Had the same problem. My forward and direct clutch plates were worn terribly. I'm in the middle of a rebuild now. This doesn't mean that you have the same problem. Worn clutches are one reason. Could be something in the valve body as well.
@thecardrawer10 I'm not sure exactly what a rebuild costs but it's usually pretty expensive. The cheapest way to fix it would probably be a used transmission.

@thecardrawer10 I'm not sure what they usually go for but that sounds cheaper than taking it somewhere and having a shop rebuild it.
