I think "Pro Tip" should be the title of your book. These tidbits are priceless.
Thank you. I like it.
"Pro Tip: The Mike Farrington Story and Other Tales From the Board Room"
Could also be the title of his sex tape.
@@MikeFarrington That's actually a highly non-vomitous suggestion, Mike. You're the rare dude with woodworking/carpentry skill married with the mechanical know-how to restore, tune and maintain your equipment. All you'd need to do is review your hundreds of hours of content, and then carry a 3x5 card to jot down thoughts as you work... assemble into a book, publish, and ... $$$
@@mattelias721 That is a good idea. I'll give that some thought.
Actually showing that bevel alignment. You sir are a gentleman and a scholar.
Thank you.
Oh. My. God. !! The 45 adjustment was what I was fighting for the last 2 years. Thank you so much!! (I have the same saw) :)
Yeah, that is a subtle yet important adjustment.
Stopped and watched Living Color’s top ten videos on their channel. Back now. Awesome that they have stayed together for this long. Only the bassist dipped in and out a little for his own music.
Good stuff for sure.
Cult Of Personality is a tour de force. Every member of Living Colour is a tremendous musician-Calhoun, Skillings, Glover and Reid. Part of the timelessness of the song is the nearly absurdly long guitar solo that spans the history of rock and roll in about a minute and innumerable finger adjustments.
Of course lyrically it will always remain relevant.
Great video, gotta go now and listen to Vivid again!
Thank you. That is one of those songs with so many layers. totally awesome.
this is literally my dream set up. not necessarily those specific saws, but two cabinet saws one fence with a slider on the left. Keep a crosscut and a rip cut blade in them respectively. The DREAM
This setup punches above its weight for sure. Really efficient with the two saws.
The colossus of cut
The king of chop
The great carve-ino
Ha! Thank you.
The Behemoth of Bevel
The Sultan of Slot!
@@nelsonhays Haha! Very nice.
Love the mighty duo. I have had a PowerMatic 66 with the original version of the Excalibur sliding fence for over 10 years, and love it. Great tip on the fence reset jig.
Thank you very much.
GREAT video with tips. Great for anyone with a cabinet level saw. I have a similar setup. I first started using the Excalibur sliding attachment maybe 25 years ago. I had it attached to a PM 66 for years, then added a Uni to it. But a couple years ago I replaced the 66 with an older Oliver (quite a bit heavier saw, running a 14" blade) I did most of the adjustments that you made, (though not the dust collection as the Oliver base is all cast iron and does have a decent dust port, but still table saws are not the best for dust collection) but I didn't adjust the table with the blade at a 45! That is pretty good tip there. I'm now going to play with that. thanks.
Thank you. That 45 adjustment will really help with bevels.
Glad to see another unifence advocate. I sought one out and would never change. Awesome setup!
Thank you. They are great for sure.
Your combined exceptional skills - woodworking and mechanical - coupled with your practical approach to doing whatever it is you're doing make this one of the best TH-cam Channels. Your make is seem so easy; a hallmark of a true craftsman.
Thank you very much!
Great video. I have a 1944 Unisaw that is just awesome. Old bullet motor version with upgrade to Unifence from original J fence. Runs smooth as silk. I went through same adjustments but never got the 45 degree cut aligned enough. After watching you do it I feel inspired to try again.
Good stuff. Thank you for sharing.
Great content, non-vomitous! If I had dust collection AND a massive Board Room, I'd do something similar. For my 2.5-car garage/shop, I'd have to set my saws back to back... which would prevent me from giving into the temptation to saw something with BOTH saws at the same time. Also, the childish tray is a stellar idea, tbh.
I love your tool/equipment content as much as your builds - I'd suggest a video on maintenance for compressors, nail guns, and the associated equipment because a pin nailer is one of those things that you wonder just how you functioned without one.
Thank you. Great input.
I wish I had a neighbor, co-worker, relative,etc. with your tool intelligence and skill.😊
Thank you.
As someone restoring and upgrading a 1980s Unisaw, your first video with that saw was SUPER helpful. This one makes me want to spend more money though. lol
Thanks for all the work Mike! It’s helpful too!
Thank you, but it's money well spent.
I LOVE the childish tray, I always have a tape measure/ pencil/ blade wrench at my saw that get in the way, it's a great idea to use that space for those.
Thank you. So far it works great for wrenches, square, etc. I vac it out once in a while.
I like that setup. And the way you go about telling about it, its good fun!
Keep it up.
Cheers from Denmark 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
Thank you.
I’m always excited when I see a new Mike Farrington video drop! Great vid as always! Your 66 and the Uni set up looks fornicating amazing!!! I went from a Uni fence on my Delta contractor saw to the Powermatic version of the Biesemeyer on my 66 and actually still miss it occasionally!
Both fences have their strong points for sure.
Always love a Farrington shop build! 🎉
Thank you.
Good call on the song rec, Vivid is one of my all time fav albums.
They are belting live too.
Good stuff, thank you.
Cult of Personality is arguably one of the great songs of all time. As you said, it has definitely aged well. As for the saws, now that they are side by side they make a powerful combo. Well done Mike 😁
It really is a great song. Thank you, the two make a good team.
After hearing that song and loving it .. I remember distinctly watching the video on MTV for the first time and was shocked to see they were black folks rocking out. Like finding out Rick Astley was white. Great moment(s) of learning to never assume and how easy we can be conditioned to do so...
I literally just played that song for my 9 year the other day. He was impressed too.
Thanks Mike for all your “pro tips “ and clear explanations! Your “word-smithing” is awesome!!
Very welcome
These are some great tune-up tips. I will need to use these on my Delta Unisaw as well. I worked in a shop where we had a 12-inch unisaw, but we had a Delta that was built back in the 50s, and it still ran like new
Thank you.
I love getting a glimpse into your though processes and you ingenuity in solving problems in such simple and well thought out ways. Way to go!
Thank you, I'm just out in the shop doing my best and trying to show it on camera.
Mike Farrington: The Sultan of Saws 😅
Haha! Thank you. I like that one.
Great video coupled with great humor, Mike. A wining combination.
Bill
Glad you enjoyed it
Sweet setup. I paired up my Felder KF700 with my Powermatic 66 but feeding from opposite sides. I fab’d up a 110” fence rail for the Powermatic to give me a little more than 48” cutting on either side of the blade. I think you will love your new setup.
That sounds amazing. Any chance you could send a picture to me via my website?
@@MikeFarrington sure thing. I’m out of town on a job for a few days. I’ll get you something soon.
@@richthomas5013 Right on.
Really cool setup! The Cult of Personality was a unique and bold song. I think I was 13 when it came out. Great video. Love your sarcasm and humor.
Awesome! Thank you!
A virtual trip to the "boardroom" is always blast. Thanks Mike.
Thank you.
Perfect timing for me to catch this typically on-point Farrington video. I'm about to pick up a vintage Unisaw myself this weekend and will soon be aping all the practical tips you share here. Thank you!
Good stuff. Thank you.
@@MikeFarringtonGot the saw, mfg'd 1962. One owner, original manual carefully preserved. Stock of shop-made zero-clearance insert blanks thrown in, virtually every operational element dialed in and good-to-go, as is. As good as a used buy gets... Seller (retiring) was a real craftsman. I'll still do my due diligence, but I'm starting from first and goal at the three yard line
@@michael.schuler Sounds like a great find.
Great video. I need to pickup another unisaw one of these days. I bought an older purple Excalibur sliding table attachment and realized I don’t want to put it on my current unisaw since I do a lot of rip cuts.
If you have the space for two saws, this type of slider is really handy.
“Saw Island” 😁👍🏻. Thx for the video Mike!
Thanks for watching!
I used neoprene tape, silicone, red sheathing tape and magnet sheets to completely seal up my cheap Ridgid saw, it gets surprisingly good dust collection with just a shop vac and a 4" to 2" adapter.
Neoprene tape sounds fun. I bet I could put some of that to use. Good idea.
Good call on the song recommendation. Definitely one of those songs you should listen to with headphones on, eyes closed and really take it all in. Oh yeah, cool tablesaw video too.
Thank you very much.
Great job. I just finished up my unisaw tuneup and I don't want to think about leveling and aligning 2 saws but it seems like your method was pretty straightforward. I got introduced to cult of personality playing grand theft auto. Great song!
It didn't take too long to level the two saws. So far it's been worth the effort.
INSANE song recommendation. very timely. Happy 4th of July and Happy Birthday to The United States of America
Thank you. Happy 4th!
Been following you for years and the content continues to be excellent! Thanks for sharing this. I have a real old Powermatic 66 and it’s in need of being dialed in. Hopefully this inspires me to get busy!
Thank you!
Great set up Mike, and an awesome song suggestions. Have a good one.
Thanks, you too!
Mike, I love your set up. So freaking cool. When I do large items that need to be cainer like this, I like to shoot a laser level across the room, then take two pieces of plywood and make an upside down tea where I strike a line where the laser is at the highest point. Then I can just place the block anywhere I need and I can get everything leveled up.
Now it’s time to go turn that song on.
interesting tip, thank you.
Thank you for the song pick, a sly and very apt comment for our times. Rock on Brother.
Thank you very much.
Thank you for your enthusiasm in sharing, it will help a lot of people watching this video, thank you very much
Thank you very much.
Whoda thought?? What a brilliant idea Mike. You are much more than just a woodworker.

Thank you.
This video comes in at a perfect time for me, just picked up a second Unisaw, one for rips/crosscuts, one for dado stack. Contemplating a router lift in the extension table bridging the two. Great video as always!
Good stuff for sure.
2 minutes is and already so much knowledge dropped.
Thank you very much.
Awesome video Mike. I learned a whole bunch. Thanks.

Graced with the glory of the SHOP VAC! 😂😂😂
Ha! Thank you.
Beautiful setup!
Thank you.
As always filled with great info and dad jokes....always look forward to your videos
Glad you like them!
Mike, love the video,as always. You talking through your order of operations is actually really helpful for understanding the nuance of what you are doing, but also as education for the next time one of us are doing anything similar. You delve into details that other gloss over. I have NEVER seen, read, or heard of someone checking blade alignment when the blade is at 45 degrees. Not only did you show it, you explained why and how to fix misalignment in that plane.
As a thank you I will pass along a song recommendation of my own. Well, more of a band/album recommendation. Check out King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I'd suggest Iron Lung as a song or the album Polygonwandaland to start. Just know that they are a powerhouse jam band with a deep catalog of different musical styles culminating in 25 albums since 2012. I hope you enjoy the trip down the rabbit hole.
Thank you very much. I try to show as much detail as possible. I have heard of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, but I have not really given them a good listen. I will be doing that today. Thank you.
Big big fan. Thank you for continuing to create more content!
My pleasure!
I think the only thing that could make this setup even better is a third table saw on the opposite end with a double taper sanding disc permanently setup!
I like that. Good idea.
I knew you could do it Mike !!
Happy 4th
Thank you.
Thanks Mike 🎉 another great video
Thank you.
have to say that having used that slider in the past and owning a full size slider there is no comparison, that being said it depends on what you're doing, I mostly cabinets so I am cutting full sheets all the time. but I do have a PM66 as well that is mostly used for hardwoods and normally has. a rip blade on it. Funny you mentioned NASA, I just bought a jointer that it turns out was originally made and sold to NASA, I thought that was pretty cool!
If you are building cabinets with 4x8 sheets, yes a full sized slider is the better bet. However, I have a CNC machine, so when I have a job with more than a couple sheets, thats my go to. So that really puts the slider in no mans land. Hence this experiment.
@@MikeFarrington yeah, I don't have a CNC And have no desire for one, I don't get along with computers, and, I have a system that I can build boxes pretty quick. I don't build a lot of furniture anymore just no call for handmade stuff around here
@@oliver299d Makes sense.
That’s an awesome set up! It also solves the great debate which is better? PM66 vs unisaw, just get both 👍🏻😆
Left and Right tilt is pretty cool too. Nice work.
Ha! Both have their strong points for sure.
Very entertaining videos, instant sub. Fun fact : I opened for Living Color in 2010 at a Festival in the Netherlands. Amazing band :)
Wow that is amazing. I bet that was a great show.
@@MikeFarrington it was !
Totally jealous...since moving to my current location, I'm not able to fit my excalibur siding table in my small home shop. I'd pay big money to be able to quickly attach and detach the slider without having to do complex setups.
That is a bummer. I would think in your situation a Norm style sled would be the best bet. You could hang it on the wall and it would take up little space.
damn... that's a sweet rig. I have a General 350R and I would love to add the Excaliber slider but I just don't have the room, thus my track saw.
Even with the setup, a track saw is still needed. Thank you.
Wonderful video! Could you please share some more information on the sliding table for the Unisaw?
Thank you. I didn't want to share too much as this specific product is no longer sold. However, Powermatic and SawStop sell a similar version. Check out their websites for more info.
Great video, I was wondering what you were going to do with the Unisaw. You have made a lot of changes to the shop. How about a new shop tour?😊
Happy Independence Day!
Thank you. That is a good idea. I should do a shop tour.
Best on the web.
Thank you very much.
Your stuff is never vomitous!
Thank you. It's a good thing not to be.
Living Colour was the opening act for the Stones at the Oakland Coliseum in 1989 during the Steel Wheels tour. I wasn't too impressed with LC (yes, I'm a Boomer) but Carlos Santana made an unannounced appearance and played a few songs which was very cool.
Music is personal. While I love that song and band, I totally realize why someone would not like them. Carlos is awesome too though.
Vernon Reid for President!!!!
🎸🎸🎸🎸
Totally.
Great video :) I was wondering, are you worried about the motor overheating when you cover up all the airflow, or will the dust collection also suck away the heat?
Dust collection is moving a lot of air, I think that is enough for the heat as well.
Living Color!
Underrated band in my opinion.
Nice one!
Thank you! Cheers!
3 table saws could lead to some great economy of production.
I'm a tad jelly, with only a dewalt contractor saw to work with.
When can I come over and build stuff? (Asked from Alberta. ;-) )
Ha! That would be quite the drive.
@@MikeFarrington it wouldn't be a spur of the moment trip, that's for sure...
The sultan of swat
Haha! Sounds like you get the reference.
@MikeFarrington absolutely !!! It is a classic ! As always amazing video, with even better dad jokes and cult classic movie references !
Great song recommendation, that song played everyday on the radio in the machine shop. I worked at in high school that 45° alignment. If that is out, could that be why anytime I have cut a 45° bevel it has never been accurate? I use a Beall tilt box. Note, not a pro, total amateur.
There are lots of reasons for a saw to not cut great. That could fix your problem, at a minimum it will eliminate a variable.
Yes, we as Americans are dealing with a real live example of the Cult of Personality............... :)
I think it's all humans for all of mankind, just in different degrees.
Mike, you mentioned that you bolted down the legs previously for the slider. I have the sawstop branded version and also constantly knock it out of alignment whe bumping into it.
I'm wondering if you have any more info to share about how you bolted the legs down? Did you perhaps replace the feet that came with the legs to something more substantial to support bolting them down?
Thanks
Just use L brackets, one side using a metal screw and one using a concrete anchor. Easy as pie.
@@MikeFarrington thanks!
I bought one of these, can't even cross cut a sheet of plywood, took it off now sitting in the barn getting rusty.
This one will just crosscut a sheet of plywood, with the fence in the rear setting.
Mike, did you put any kind of ramp inside the cabinet to direct the dust towards the fitting? How effective is the dust collection?
Dust collection is pretty good. No ramps, I figured dust would build up in the dead areas.
Great video as always! May I ask? If I wanted to upgrade my stock table saw fence, which one is the way to go?
You can't go wrong with either. I would try to find a used on cheap and just buy one in good condition.
Mighty, Inc. now makes block planes? I thought they only made biscuit jointers?
Ha! Love that business name.
6" dust collection fittings instead of 4"? Well look at fancy pants rich McGee over here
Fuck me, adding a sliding table saw attachment to your double-wide table saws to see if they can replace your dedicated sliding table saw? Michael...
But then you won't buy a 13 mm drill bit and will wallow out a hole with 1/2" instead??
Thank you for the comments.
Mike, do you need to bolt the legs of the slider attachment down or could you use some adhesive?
Adhesive could work if it was strong enough.
I thought Excalibur was long out of business. Is your slider new old stock?
Yes, This was a back of the garage find, still new in box. This thing is probably 15 years old, maybe more.
sweet
Thank you.
I notice you always using your Lamello biscuit joiner, I’m in the market for either the Lamello or the Festool domino, what are your thoughts on how they compare, thanks
Well I like the Lamello because it's faster and really designed for use with 3/4" material. I like the domino if the joint is narrow, like when building cabinet doors. If I could only have one, I would probably go with the domino. If I was on a budget, I would get a cheaper biscuit joiner and a router.
I always learn something new here. Do you know if your sanding blade thingy works on a sawstop?
Yes it does, however, you should run in bypass mode, and confirm you can tilt 2 degrees towards the fence or plan to run the fence on the other side of the blade. Finally, if you saw does not tilt 2 degrees towards the fence, email me, I have a picture tutorial of a modification you can make to achieve the 2 degree tilt.
@@MikeFarrington thank you sir! I have a few vanity jobs lined up and I can see the benefits of it. Thank you for your time good sir.
@@jamiemajerick91 My pleasure.
Should the blade have a few thou of "toe in" relative to the table/fence, or is perfectly parallel ideal?
The blade should be as parallel as possible to the miter slot. Some say the fence should be toed away from the blade, I like to keep things as parallel as possible.
cool
Thank you.
Cutting a hole in a vintage Unisaw's cabinet is kinda like declawing a cat. I wouldn't do it, but if you were to adopt a cat that had been declawed I wouldn't complain.
Good way to put it 😂
Agreed.
watched you for years...maybe its time you build tools now
Hmm. You may be right.
Very nice, but I'd rather use a queen of Diamonds as a shim instead of a 2 of hearts (@13:11)
Ha!
As far as your sanding disc goes, what if you have a safety sally saw?
Run the saw in bypass mode. Also, confirm that your saw will tilt 2 degrees towards the fence, or plan to run the fence on the other side of the blade. If your saw doesn't not tilt towards the fence, I have a modification that can be done. Send me an email via my website for more info.
I noticed that you don't use a riving knife on any of your saws, can these not take them or do you just not like using them?
The best I could do is add a splitter, which only work so good. If I ever were to buy a new saw, it would be fore the riving knife.
👍👍👍👍🫵 the man
Thank you.
Hmm, realizing my mistake, 3 of hearts are good alternatives
Good catch.
No need for cleaning bills, the video is squeaky clean 😂
Ha! That is good news.
if some knows, is it possible to add a riving knife to the saw? my friend wants to sell me his unisaw, but i already own a delta contractor saw. im just worry about the material binding and knocking back. thanks in advance.
It is not possible to add a riving knife, but it is possible to add a splitter.
