    I honestly had no idea the versatility a bench grinder could have with all of the different options for jigs. Always figured it’s great to sharpen a beater chisel or a lawn mower blade or what have you. Didn’t think of it as such an accurate way to sharpen anything complicated other than those things. Very cool! Thanks for always willing to teach us something new. Your videos rock!

    • @MikeFarrington

    Hi Mike, you’re absolutely awesome…
    I love the quality and the enthusiasm you put into the projects. I loved when you said you had to probe the accuracy of the 0.260” measurement.
    Thanks a lot for sharing your ideas. I’ve had a hard time convincing myself about getting a Tormek mainly for the slow speed. I just realized I’ve found a good alternative by going with your idea.

    Nice to see another oh most excellent video demonstrating your skill and knowledge. But Mike, for me, Not gonna lie. I have gotten into big trouble here in New Hampshire. Yea. It's been motorcycles for me. The barn finds, the container finds ~ That "tampered with" motorcycle from the latino neighborhood in Massachusetts. Less woodworking for me. It took fbMP to get me off of my woodworking and sailboat rehab dreams. It's the four barrel carburetor bracket that has my attention. My son now settling in the Denver area. So we will see. Maybe I'll ride on by and visit. (I now have three of these, in good shape, not quite running (yet)) Gonna weld up a camping pannier for the Suzuki Bandit 1200. Oh yea! 70 years old in May. Life is good. 🙏

    Ive only come across a few people that have a similar attitude towards the tormek, i even have one, but ended up doing exactly what youve done ans got mounts to go in front of the bench grinder, tormek was painfully slow for regrinds, and turning tools. My straight chisels did come off there like razors but the edge left of tormek was weak, so went back to ahnd finishing as i done since young age. Great video Mike and awesome workhmshop grinder set up for everything from hobbist to professional shop, this set up would be the best all round for many applications in my personal opinion.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you very much. I did a ton of research and test drove a tormek before coming to this conclusion. I think, while it has compromises, this really is the best all around setup.

    I love your videos Mike--even as I'm overawed by your machines. Long ago I "learned" to sharpen drill bits from a guy who twisted the bit as he ground it. I'm intrigued by your jig which doesn't seem to require that turning motion.

    The safety bars on the shaper are a must in my opinion. I have never used a shaper without them. And that is 35 to 40 years ago. A colleague was setting up the shaper for some window frames. He quickly ran a test block, without the bars, to save precious time. The ambulance got him, and his one and a half now detached fingers, to the hospital quickly, to save precious time. Alas, the fingers could not be glued back on.

Now an ex millworker (currently working in construction management) I am looking to find more ways to be in a position to spend time with my family and have started my own channel.
    It is hard to find the time to get in the shop with a full time job and young family but maybe I will achieve some small taste of the success you have earned. Take a look at a video! Its a small shop with similar sq footage to what you had when you started your career. All the best.

    I often buy my firewood from Home Depot! Every bit of their lumber is “firewood” rated. 😂👍🏻

    "If I had those tools I could do that too."
    No, Chad, you couldn't. Can it. Sweet setup, Mike. It's invigorating watching someone who actually takes the time to fully understand his tools. Nicely done. Also, don't EVER stop telling your dry ass jokes. I'm chuckling like a fool over here. "Don't know where it got its name, but..."

    Pro tip for stiff cords: just leave them in the sun for a little bit and it will remove a lot of the memory in the cable

      Yeah, that does help, but I think they should have used a better cord from the start.

      Funny you mention that. First you are correct, that is the crazy satisfied laugh. Good ear. I actually tried to isolate that sound, I was going to pepper it into all my videos when something cool happens. Problem was the mic didn't pick it up good enough. I spent like 20 minutes trying to dial that in.

    I have the same grinder and have been wondering if it would accept the diamond wheels. Making a dedicated bench for it is also on my list of things to do. You gave me some ideas, thank you for sharing.

    Hey Mike, so good to have you back. Great video as always! Quick question for you from a European viewer - on the setout square you were using, why does it have a zero (and arrow) aligning with the inner 5" mark on the wider leg and counting 'backwards' toward the leg junction?
    P.s. croc haters only hate till they try them on for a while!

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed about the crocs. As to the square. I'm not sure, that is just how they printed the ruler. Maybe I put it in backwards? I never look at the numbers, only the tick marks.
