We still have more stories to tell 😊 I will also start doing more “how to” videos soon so others can document amazing stories from their own families. I’m also thinking of interviewing people outside our family. Some of the commenters on the channel have some incredible stories!!

When I went to Paradise Island with my parents in 1958 we flew from Salisbury to Umtali and then to Vilancoulos.
From there we went by boat to the island.

I was going to high school during those years but had a memorable trip to Sofala around '68 and many times in Beira. Sounds like great times on Paradise.

These stories have captured my heart and imagination. Even though there is a touch of sadness due to the unfortunate ending of a once great country and culture. Thank you for sharing

I was a member of the Mashonaland Flying Club and flew VS many times.
Shall never forget the sad day of the air display, 8th Oct 1972, when Stuart Irwin was so tragically killed in his Chipmunk.
I was in the event straight afterwards and didn't really feel like flying but the show had to go on.
Really enjoyed you videos. Rhodesia will always hold a special place in our hearts -a place of both great joy and sadness.
Thanks for your memories. Take care.

Thank you so much for commenting! And it’s so nice to hear from somebody else who was a member of the flying club! My mother sends her greetings to you 🙏 My parents were also at the air show! And they were very close friends with Stuart Irwin. My father stopped flying soon after the air show, and he sadly developed a fear of heights afterwards. We went to Paris once and went up the Eiffel Tower and my father refused to go to the top. Stuart’s death affected him a great deal throughout his life. Can you remember Zack Bondi??

@@CapturingMemories I remember the name but can't picture him.
Others whose names I do remember and can clearly see are Angelos Stam (also tragically killed), Don and Norma Holland, Charles Pinho, George McGee, Ba Kay, Pete and Rose Hall, Gerry Pichanik, Ron Cowl, Pete Meadows, Mac Moore, Kitty and Eddie Marucci and so many others whose names I have forgotten.
In the early 1970's was living on a small farm on Shamwari Road at Nyabira. It was owned by the Evershed's - they had a son who flew for Air Rhodesia.

Hi. Thanks for uploading this. Mozambique is often overlooked in commentary on Southern Africa. People inevitably focus on South Africa and Rhodesia, which were wealthier and more developed. Nevertheless, Mozambique, which was a Portuguese colony until 1975, also had modern cities (the largest were Lourenco Marques and Beira), commercial farms, and up-to-date factories. Furthermore, one of Rhodesia's cities, Umtali, received some of its electricity from the Revue River Plant, a hydro-electric power station built in Mozambique in 1953.

Interesting video. Just one thing that I find confusing is that it seems from the maps/photos and the narrative that you flew down to Bazaruto island, stayed at that hotel and then used a boat to go across to the very small Paradise Island (Santa Carolina - which confusingly also had its own luxury hotel). The latter island is tiny but it did have its own paved airstrip. Maybe it's possible that people referred to Bazaruto island as Paradise Island too, and the term got mixed between the two.

Lisbon. I used to fly from Maputo (LM) as the crow flies to Santa Carolina islet. My diving and uw photos paradise and the best place to spend and enjoy the nice hotel and rooms at the time. Diving and photo sub was great until 1977. The sea around is the same and not spoiled at all, thanks God. The hotel is not existing now, what a pity. I am 84 and had the best memories of the great country Mozambique and their kind, gentle and respectful people. Paradises do not last forever, pity. Politics and wars spoil people`s happiness.
