Great description. I actually got the job done at the same time the video finished. Oh, it’s -17c and there’s a snow storm. 🤣 thanks for a concise and relevant article.

What these videos fail to explain is that there are two variations of thermostat. One with an integrated housing and one without. The easiest way to distinguish them is to look at the housing. With integrated housing has three holes (two for mounting bolts and a third which is not used). Non integrated housing thermostat only has the two mounting bolt holes. Each of the two variations also use a different type of seal.
An O ring seal for one and the paper metal gasket for the other.
The type of thermostat to install on you GMC or Chevy will depend on the water pump you have and whether it's a model before 2004 or 2004 and later. Since these guys are only changing the thermostat, they don't explain any of this. But if you change the water pump you also need the right thermostat to go along with the new pump. Yes, all of the parts may be replacements for your vehicle, but they only fit together if they match up with each other.

There is no need to remove the fan shroud and belts. I did this repair yesterday on my 2004 Silverado 1500. Remove the air intake and drain the coolant as instructed above. After that a 3 inch extension on a 3/8 in ratchet with a 10mm socket is all you need. Why create all this additional work. Work smarter not harder.

@@TRQ your right there is always multiple ways to do a task...
the easy way, and the more difficult ways....
However there's only one way to accomplish the task in the easiest fashion.
if youre paid by the hour, approach with the more difficult ways.. if youre paid by the job, make your life simple.
I know mechanics hate engineers but we have a famous saying... "If doing the bare minimum wasn't good enough, it wouldn't be called the minimum"
Same can be applied to mechanics

I understand what you are saying, but. I am a 50 year professional mechanic and it is so much better to spend just a little time to get a lot more room for working. It gives you a lot more access to light and can help with maybe seeing other problems going on. Repairing vehicles properly is a lot more than just the minimum. I may see other potential problems for a customer. That is good service.

Don't you need to refill the radiator with antifreeze before you connect the hose? Or did I miss that part? Maybe pull a vacuum on the system when refilling?

Did someone replace the water pump and not replace the thermostat at the same time? The pump looks new.

    • @fredc8346

You can see when he disassembles it has the old pump. But before reassembly there is a new pump. Probably just didn't mention that or the pump replacement part is included in another video. Since you don't see the new pump when he disassembles the pump was likely not changed without a thermostat replacement at the same time.

According to the GM factory service manual it says the housing must be replaced with the thermostat as one assembly. I'm trying to figure out why it says the thermostat cannot be replaced by itself.

It's hilarious there isn't a tutorial on a Camry. You don't need a housing gasket with one of these? Sense when?

    • @jspaulding4106
      @jspaulding4106 2 ปีที่แล้ว

If the thermostat gasket is functioning, it should seal both sides. Many water pumps come with gaskets and o-rings for different applications.
